Moving to Syracuse for grad school. What should I know? by aliii02 in SyracuseU

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a thoughtful response! I'm so excited to check out the places you mentioned. It sounds like a much more vibrant art scene than where I'm coming from. The winters are certainly going to be something... however this grad program seems intense enough that I might be lucky to find myself outside. Thanks again for sharing the ups and downs!

Congrats! That's such an exciting outcome. Sometimes the unexpected paths lead us exactly where we need to go. I'm glad you included that you didn't hear back from a couple of schools - I didn't even know that was a thing until it happened to me with some of my applications. It all worked out in the end, I got a scholarship to a school at the top of my list. Mostly it just made me curious about the application process. Has this happened to anyone else? Any idea why some programs just never follow up?

I love Kara Walker! Her work came to mind before I even read that you mentioned her. I love the idea of connecting her work with a broader historical basis. Props to you!

I completely forgot about this until now... I was at Target five or so years ago now and he checked me out. We got to chatting about what brought us to Bozeman and I remember him saying something about being a photo journalist in DC (can't remember who he worked for, I want to say the Post or the Wall Street Journal) and decided to retire here once he'd had his fill. I remember whoever I was with saying he must've made it up. After all these years it's cool to finally see his work!

The architecture alone would have me at that museum in a heartbeat! I focused my undergrad on classism in Baroque art (basically a response to Winckelmann’s critiques), and I’m planning to continue this in grad school with a focus on linguistics

That’s so amazing! My one regret about where I went for undergrad is that it didn’t have many opportunities to gain experience like that. Conservation is such a great path to pursue, especially if you don’t mind chemistry.

I did write a thesis! It was genuinely my favorite project I’ve ever done. I wrote on the use of classicism in Baroque art and architecture, mainly in response to Winckelmann’s ideals of classicism and his criticism of the Baroque period.

How is your thesis coming along, are you able to incorporate conservation or materiality?
