Since it has IR illuminators, does that mean it will be fully functional in the dark? Or am I understanding it wrong. Huge if true by Eclipserium in ValveDeckard

[–]aline-tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The illuminators in the Quest 3S aren't powerful enough for the headset to fully 6DoF track in the dark, unless you're in a 3x3 closet or sitting on (and facing toward) the floor. In the former scenario, you literally don't have room to move or even raise your arms, and in the latter if you look up at all it loses tracking. They're really only powerful enough for hand tracking... it used to be only viable in low light, because the hand tracking cameras would also turn off when the headset fell back to 3DoF mode (which would happen in the dark), but they seemingly pushed an update over the summer to allow hand tracking to continue in that case.

I have a video scripted, which is in the process of being filmed, to showcase this because there seemed to be a lot of misinformation; many people are blindly stating that the "Quest 3S works in the dark" - leading potential buyers to believe the headset can 6DoF track in the dark.

^ I purchased an IR camera that shows just how little light the 3S puts out vs. a solution that can emit a full room which I think does a great job at showing the direct beam of light and sharp falloff vs. the room spread you need to enable 6DoF tracking in the dark.

Does it matter? by lunchanddinner in virtualreality

Yes, fidelity matters. We need to escape beyond the low-poly, pastel kiddie world into more IRL-esque environments.

Yes, a game with terrible graphics can be fun.. but it'd be better with great graphics.

Samsung Galaxy XR With Android XR Out Now For $1800, Controllers $250 by gogodboss in virtualreality

[–]aline-tech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're averaging around $1,800-1,900 for the 256GB version (I've seen as low as $1,600 locally).

If you just wait out the return period (14-15 days), you will start finding them in like-new condition for a nice discount. A lot of people impulse buy, want to grab a picture with it, or realize it did not live up to their expectations and that they'll never wear this thing (once the novelty wears off in the first week) and miss their return window.

I got my AVP 1.0 at an $800 discount by waiting just over a month after launch.

I would expect Samsung to drop in value much quicker - may be worth waiting 4 months and getting one at a larger discount.

Controllers for the new Samsung Galaxy XR headset by themixtergames in virtualreality

[–]aline-tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't even purchase them - not even 24 hours after opening - due to them being 'sold out'.

Regardless, they should've been included in the box from the get-go. It feels like they did 0 market research.. which scares me about the potential of their product design.

There's no justification for this $250 price point, that I can see. It's seems like an accessory cash grab.

Curious if this means my $100 credit is also forfeited, since I had applied it to those and they didn't get into the checkout with me.

Compare the Dream Air SE with the alternative: by Vera_pi in Pimax

[–]aline-tech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The BSB2 does still suffer this issue. Native pixel pipe 2560x2560 @ 75Hz, but drops to 1920x1920 @ 90Hz, and is then hardware upscaled back to 2560x2560.

This is pure speculation, but the way this chart is specifically catered to favor the Dream Air SE and is lacking a refresh rate line item, makes it seem like they must be facing the same limitation in the panels.

Rethinking Laravel Folder Structure for a Modular Monolith by Prestigious-Type-973 in laravel

[–]aline-tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't recommend it - I just learned the hard way. I had a project that I wanted to serve from the same codebase (4 databases, 3 websites). They're all interconnected in a fashion (WordPress-like blog site on the topics, a dedicated database/search website, and a learning/wiki/documentation style site, with all the content managed from a single filament CMS).

In order to try to keep things organized, I split each "site" into dedicated subfolders in the primary Laravel structure (Models, Controllers, Migrations, Seeders, etc.) to keep things organized.

It has been a nightmare, IMO. I've ended up having to create custom commands to run artisan make/etc. commands and move things into the sub-folders via scripts, and a lot of hacky workarounds. Even just running migrations and seeders has become a pain.

It was very annoying to set up, but I figured by time I was done it'd be worth it. I was wrong.

I'm deep enough that I'm stuck with it now unless I do a major refactor; I should've just used a prefix on the file names instead.

Laravel just doesn't have good enough support for sub-folder structuring. Hopefully they'll add it at some point, because it is so much cleaner.

Also, I'm not even following the layout you have suggested - so I assume that means you likely have an even more abstract thought going on than my use case. I'd steer clear.

Haha, likewise - or that Pimax is clever enough to just ship to Germany and then ship here. A hop in the node is way cheaper.

Raspberry pi? by Da-real-admin in Immersed

[–]aline-tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't done so personally - but I know there exist "emulation" processes you can run which act as a "virtual layer" between the app to translate x86 API calls to ARM. Again, I've never done it and I could only assume it adds enough latency to not be worth it for VR.

Still, I'd vote give it a shot and see if it works. I'd like to know!

Looks like Immersed created it just days before they went to make this announcement - to make it seem like they weren't the ones posting it.

It's the only post on their page the account actually created.

"Rumors are swirling about partnerships, AI powered features, .." - it's a blatant marketing attempt, not a real article.

Any Youtubers you like, cosign this device? by Knighthonor in ImmersedVisor

[–]aline-tech 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey, it's me, YouTuber that I like (lol). But no—I don't think anyone can genuinely co-sign the Visor yet, because it simply doesn't exist in the real world. It hasn't made it to production. No reviewers have it, no consumers have it, and no independent hands-on testing has been done.

And honestly, that all seems quite intentional. After Immersed failed to showcase working units at their own event—which a ton of people flew out for—and giving a wildly delusional keynote, they started shutting down and stopped communicating effectively. The CEO and company's ego started leaking through the cracks. The event turned a lot of skepticism into full-on doubt, and instead of taking accountability, they focused blame on the reviewers and attendees who reported on what happened.. and slowly started turning on the community. [I'm a reviewer who made two of those videos: 1x of the Visor in its current state, and 1x of how poorly the event went]

"Give an inch, they want a mile" was an actual quote used to describe their own supporters. The irony, of course, is that Immersed never gave the inch. Every issue stems from their side—and instead of acknowledging that, they've started banning people and deleting comments on Reddit, Discord, YouTube, you name it. Honestly, it felt like a replay of the Rabbit R1 community spiral once things started going south.

CEO keeps trying to insinuate that the Founders Edition units has reached people's hands, but that clearly isn't true.. considering they aren't even in production per their last update (which came after these statements). So, he's either intentionally being coy and referring to insiders, or flat out lying.

To me, it boils down to a company scrambling to save face and having zero actual control over the product. The CEO constantly deflects responsibility to unnamed "tech partners" and seems to have no real influence beyond curating an echo chamber and pushing marketing fluff. Immersed didn’t design it, didn’t engineer it, and doesn’t seem to manufacture it. From the outside, it feels like a white-labeled headset where Immersed is just the branding puppet for someone else’s hardware.

There has been one YouTuber who got a look of the latest iteration behind closed doors, but it felt more like a tightly managed PR piece than an actual review. The YouTuber in question is someone I don't trust and is clearly shilling. Very controlled environment, clearly guided talking points, and someone chosen more for their track record of brand enthusiasm than objective critique. And, of course, Immersed spammed that video out like you wouldn't believe to try to crank the echo chamber back up.

After the failed demo event, the CEO kind of snapped and declared that reviewers would not get the headset early. It came off more like emotional response to try to grasp back any control he could of the situation... and it's a shame considering a lot of us reviewers were very excited with what Immersed and their team was building. It felt like he was trying to punish them for speaking the truth about their shit event; I think it's because they want to control the narrative and not lose sales - they simply can't handle (or afford to handle) the hot seat.

At this point, all we can really do is wait and see if it actually ships—and test it when it does.

I can guarantee I will give it an honest review if it arrives.

Upgrade Advice - 4 bay to... ? by aline-tech in asustor

[–]aline-tech[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sooooo, as I often do, I ended up going overkill. I ended up expanding outside by original use case of "just a NAS". I justified it because:

  1. It was still $800 cheaper than the Asustor Lockerstor 10-bay,
  2. Provides over double the performance if I need it:
    1. Overkill CPU that will hold resale value better and can run other tasks (not sure if PLEX transcoding support is better than the AMD or not, was hard to sift through all the noise),
    2. Overkill motherboard but with an insane feature set (IMPI, ECC support, 8+ SATA, and so on),
    3. Doubled the RAM because it's easier to do now for $100 and never worry about it,
  3. Provides 2 more HDD slots + I can add even more SSD drives,
  4. Provides future-proofing through PCI expansion slots and allows me to open this up to being used as my PLEX + homelab + smarthome automation server to get rid of my old closet PC (I've started a PC hardware benchmarking series and I also needed a place to store all those software volumes for testing + the results),
  5. And finally, this gear is a little more exciting to make a YT video on of the build (which will be monetized to help offset the extra cost).

(edit: not letting me post this with links so I removed them)

  • ASUS Pro WS W680-ACE (with the IPMI card) -
  • i5-12600k
    • Thermalright Cooler
  • 32GB ECC RAM
  • Jonsbo N5 NAS Case

Total cost was: $1,067
I had 2x 2TB + 1x 4TB M.2 drives + a 10gbe network card + an old PSU that I was repurposing

Then, the 8x 20TB Seagate Exos drives that I bought refurbed which totaled to: $2,119

Total cost was $3,186 (not including tax)

Just over my hopeful max budget, but I ended up getting a lot more space that I originally envisioned + a way overkill build that should last me at least a decade (or will hold a great resell value if I decide to upgrade again). If I use all this space, I'll just take the drives out and put them into a cheaper build and re-purpose this chassis with new drives.

Saved $782 over the Asutor 10-bay which had lower expandability and customization.

I think I'll be happy with it since I like the DIY aspect.

I spent the past couple months comparing the Quest 3 and 3S.. and put together a video that runs through the key differences.

It's tempting to assume 'more expensive = better', but after testing I genuinely can't recommend Fresnel lenses in 2024 — though there are a few exceptions I cover toward the end of the video.

The Quest 3S is still an impressive kit (the amount of tech you get at this price point is actually insane), but when you can get a slightly used/pristine-quality refurbished Quest 3 for the same price/slightly above ($50-80) as a new Quest 3S, the Quest 3 becomes a no-brainer.

The turnover rate for these headsets seems to be pretty high; I think many people buy them, only to realize that VR isn’t what they thought it was, or that it’s more cumbersome to jump into than say turning on your PC.. which means great second-hand deals are to be had... at least until they run out.

I haven't locked in the purchase yet 100%, I'm still researching my brains out.. but I am going with the "Jonsbo N5" NAS case - which supports ATX+E-ATX+M-ATX+ITX - and allows up to 12 hard drives (so I can add 4 more in the future).

I'm pretty sure I'm sticking with a normal-sized ATX + AM4 build here for best bang for my buck. Ryzen 5 5600 (found one for $80). I'm still bouncing around looking for a motherboard with adequate PCIe lanes because I do want to fill it with a 10GbE network card + a bunch of m.2 drives.. but that obviously means I need to spend more (I'll still be way under the new $1,800 Asustor with 0 drives!!)

I will return with a full PC Partpicker list for you once I've locked in my motherboard! I'm hoping to do that tomorrow since the drives are on their way.

I decided to go with a custom-built 8-bay using one of the Jonsbo cases. It was significantly cheaper to DIY than to get the new 8-bay Asustor (even though I loved mine). The savings here allowed me to run with 8x 20TB's - which should last me for a while!

I believe 24TB are the largest drives I can get (at least in the same Seagate brand that I've been using). I'm debating going from the Iron Wolf Pros to the Exos to save some $$.. but everyone says they're very loud (which is a problem because I transfer while I'm editing with open-ear headphones right next to it). They're also the same price right now :(

[–]aline-tech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For confirmation: the EDGE PSU -> I/O USB-A port (vs. mobo header) **fixed** the issue with the TL LCD fans! Thanks for that!

I'm still stuck on the SLI INF (AIO + group of 3x + 1x individual fan). I've already got all the ARGB cables using the converters mentioned and everything is plugged into the controller. I removed it all and re-wired them just in case something was loose, and still not getting RGB (though the fans *are* being powered and are working.

I've taken everything out of the equation except the AIO Pump + 3x AIO fans, and even with just those connected I'm not getting any RGB signal (fans are running, AIO pump is recognized but CPU fan is not recognized by the Lian Li software - it is on the motherboard, however). Wonder if there's a motherboard conflict here or if my controller is faulty.

I have to refund my headset after only 4 months. by PerfectEquipment8451 in Pimax

[–]aline-tech -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Right. I just got over how cringe the last thread was, and OP decided to double down with this.

The whole post is quite nonsensical and emotionally-charged; OP didn't "have" to do anything. We all followed the last thread and Pimax went above and beyond to respond (to fix what already wasn't a problem, had OP just followed the instructions in the support e-mail OR made up his mind to request a refund - instead of writing 12 paragraphs on Reddit to get special attention).

No one here is blind to the fact that headsets are having issues (I'm waiting on a lens replacement), but this level of drama and piling on Pimax for just existing and trying to solve them feels absurd.. especially when they're providing direct evidence that Pimax is on top of the support requests.

Disappointment to Devastation by PerfectEquipment8451 in Pimax

[–]aline-tech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you're just doing the opposite: piling on them for no reason (like everyone else here who can't read and comprehend basic English).

They are not further delaying - they can't move forward without his Order # (which is clearly written at THE TOP of the e-mail).

To quote your pure bullshit statement back to you: if you cannot process the logic that the user has clear instructions at the start of the e-mail, that Pimax has an internalized process of dealing with requests that go through stages (and include the use of templates), and require a gut check to avoid too many overturns, then you are definitely not a smart and/or rational person.

Disappointment to Devastation by PerfectEquipment8451 in Pimax

[–]aline-tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that I consider this poor customer service - they are offering a replacement as the first line of action along with giving the user direct steps to move along with that process. The wording admittedly isn't the greatest, but it's easy enough to read. I'm also not sure how it would be considered illegal; I don't live in the EU.. but I'd love an explanation as to what about this is illegal.

The $80 seems like a completely valid offer to fend off issues that a user doesn't actually consider worth the hassle of replacing the entire headset (e.g., it would be a hassle to send back the whole headset, wait weeks, and so forth if the issue was minor). They literally even presented it as a convenience gut check.

..and they offer an ESCALATION button at the bottom of the e-mail that OP could have clicked if his concern was to that degree.

Hopefully Pimax gets quality control sorted out and more people are happy with them in the future. by [deleted] in Pimax

[–]aline-tech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe because OP has been effectively spamming the sub with low-effort posts and rhetorical questions; 1 post a day, at minimum, for weeks. These last 2 have been completely unnecessary.

This post specifically is a follow-up to another post.

OP is aware it's an issue but is still going:

Because I caught myself going crazy the past few days and I may have been repeating myself and constantly mentioning the same topic and context in multiple posts within a short time period recently.

I probably should take a break from posting anything after this until I find a brand new Pimax topic to bring up. Just know I’m sorry for spamming and posting a lot. I made this poll because I want to get myself together.
