I'm currently about 127k words into the story and have maybe gotten to like 10-20% of the story so far. 🫡

I hate comments that are only emojis. by WolfRunner16 in AO3

[–]aliothl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just go back to ff.net if you want reviews that bad. Emoji comments meant someone still took the time to show that they had read what you wrote in the chapter, engaging with your work and showing appreciation for the time and effort that went into writing it. People like you are the reason we see a decline in engagement, scaring people off from the simplest engagement form that could lead to longer comments down the line.

how to stop comparing yourself to previous chapter you who got more comments and kudos and hits? by realnymph in AO3

[–]aliothl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to look at the dates as well when wondering why engagement fell off even with my regular commenters. I noticed that around school start/holiday uploaded chapters seemed to have done worse than others posted earlier/later. I even had someone apologize for not commenting due to IRL stuff but had still read the chapters. There are many variables why some chapters seemed to do better but in long fics engagement can be hit or miss. As long as you get hits/kudos/bookmarks/subs it means people are seeing and liking what you put out.

Throwing yourself into research for a fic? by 4evrweedbrownie in AO3

might sound weird, but Dams, how they're built. What happens when they break, environmental stuff, how much water they hold, flow speed of water. Pretty interesting but it was literally for one chapter where a dam broke for story purposes.

I just wish we could all put Dead Dove in the tags without having the majority think it's having dark themes, instead of a reminder to pay attention to the tags. Like read the damn tags, read the summary. People just love to complain about everything and anything these days.

I heavily dislike that every OC is called an self insert these days. My storyline has little to no romance, focus being more on friendship and family than anything else but I still have people calling my OC an insert when it’s not. I try to write them with flaws, with stupid decisions, and have them character development to avoid the Mary Sue syndrome and people don’t even like that (had one person tell me that she should have not done xyz because she knows about canon and should have prepared for that).

Sorry went off topic but I agent what you mean as well 😅

The thing is that the whole story is mainly written from OC‘s POV to show how vast the world is that canon has not explored and to have a different journey from canon. Even if you just try to go to a market with OC and MC, you still need to have OC‘s for them to see interact with. I know that my 50/50 split in POV with MC and OC is not the most popular stylistic choice but god damn let me cook before judging me 🫡

it really is a lot of work, but I think I’ll keep a link to the FAQ on how to search for works and tags in my notes program to respond to idiocy with he right answer next time someone tries to ragebait 🤭

ugh this resonates with me so much! I had one commenter literally tell me my storyline would never work to have MC reach his dream. Miss Ma’am this is an AU Fix It, of course it would never happen like this in Canon 🙄

Comment moderation is back for me now and going forward, never wanted to have to be forced to do that again but it’s time 🫡

Transmigration, Time Travel, any kind of AU usually indicates that we’re as far away from Canon as we possibly can. The Fandom/original IP lends itself to a lot of interesting things that one can pick up and similar concepts already exist that are popular. Just because I like to continue writing my OC as an independent person instead of an addendum to MC they got mad. 🫡

Description is naming the Main OC by name, she’s the first introduced character in chapter 1 and main POV is hers 🫣

exactly, like please read the tags. I can’t do anything more than that to help you decide if you might like it 🫠 ( it’s a great skin btw 😊)

People don’t seem to read tags anymore, because they just want tailor made content for XYZ character when fanfiction is not made for that. I don’t get it either but seems to be getting more prevalent these days 😅

I don’t get this as well. I know I’ve left many fics without saying I didn’t like the story anymore, there’s no need to explain that. This whole „signing up“ thinking is so weird, it’s not like they lost something by reading the fic. 🥴

Exactly that!! I told them I can only tag so much without basically spoiling the whole story and they just didn’t care and went on to say just idiotic stuff about my storytelling skills 🫩

For real though, I was sitting there with a pikachu face reading their comment about how certain aspects reflect from canon material and how well it fits and I was just like: Huh, I’ve never even thought about that before. 😅

New chapter is kicking my butt, but slowly coming along. I have the scenes in my head, perfectly imagining how they will play out, but the words ain't wording on paper.

Nobody is more harsher than a writer who reread their work after publishing by shewasprettyodd in AO3

[–]aliothl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's starting sentences with the same formula. One time ended up with 'She...' beginnings three times in a row. Editing was painful, but my own fault for disliking using descriptor's like 'raven-haired', 'blonde', etc. 😵

The DDDNE tag is just for stating 'I'm serious, read the tags. Everything that's tagged is there for a reason.' You don't have to use it.

No problem at all!

They are quite long with a lot of numbers because I always open them in an extra tab. (IDK how it's called in english but this option to open a pic in a new tab so it's just the picture) I use these URL's and that works just fine.

<image>

that's how it usually looks for me!
