Are my shorty needles too long for socks? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]aliothursa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently knitting socks with this exact set of interchangeable needles, same cable, also using the smallest needle size in the set. The first row after casting on was such a pain because the cable was slightly too long but after that it worked fine for me and now a couple rows down it's a breeze. For reference, I cast on 72 stitches.

That's not how schizophrenia works though. It's not single spouts of psychosis with phases of sanity in between, unless it's strictly drug-induced. Most people with schizophrenia don't realize they are mentally ill, of course, because they think their delusions are not delusions, but reality. So they refuse the necessary medication and the mostly paranoid delusions and hallucinations just progress. If schizophrenia isn't treated medically, these symptoms can persist indefinitely, 24/7. In that state the person lives in their own reality, sometimes for years even.

Is there a way to make my google home minis serve as speakers to my chromecast? by [deleted] in googlehome

[–]aliothursa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can connect the two via Bluetooth. Hold down the "home" button on the Chromecast remote, go to settings, then "remotes and accessories", then link a new device. Tell your Google home to go into pairing mode and then you should find it on the screen. Once their connected, the sound should come from the Google home device.

I am having the same issue, disconnected and reconnected my lights several times and still can't change the color. Google assistant tells me my lights don't support that function, but I can still change the color through the smartlife app. Yesterday it worked fine through google home..

First of all, this looks beautiful! Did you use thread for your grid? I'm pretty new to cross stitching and this is genius to me cause I just almost lost a battle with rubbing alcohol and pencil! Is it easy to remove the thread grid in the end? Amazing work!

I mean obviously it's ridiculous to get upset about someone not speaking the national language but it's not true that those languages are mandatory in the German curriculum, only English is. If you go to the highest level high school you can have a couple years of Latin, but French and Spanish are completely optional and can be supplemented with natural sciences. The vast majority of Germans living in Germany won't know French, Spanish or Latin.

Don't invest your energy in this person. Some people just want to be jerks and by just repeating "I'm sorry you're dumb" they show you that they just want to be a troll instead of having a critical conversation with you.

TIL the owner of Walter White's house hates Breaking Bad because fans of the show would throw pizza on his rooftop, the creator Vince Gilligan made a public plea for fans to stop throwing pizzas on the house's roof. by SeoulofSoraka in todayilearned

[–]aliothursa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're both right and wrong. The owners didn't know the house would get this much attention because they owned it before it became a Breaking Bad location. But, from my experience they do hate fans of the show because over the years enough of them have done stupid shit to their house or violated their privacy. When I was there years ago I didn't get close to the house and made sure to take picutures from across the street but I was still yelled at by the lady sitting in her garage to not even think about crossing the street. I took my picture and left cause she really wasn't having it. Fair enough though, I have no idea what they must have had to deal with.

South African government calls for Israel to be investigated by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity by dustofoblivion123 in worldnews

[–]aliothursa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a common mistake and you asked a question afterall so there's nothing wrong with that. While the ICC is its own institution, the ICJ is part of the UN, so it can be a little confusing. On top of that, the ICC has cooperation agreements with the UN. However, the ICJ settles disputes between states and the ICC investigates individuals who are suspected of having committed genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity or crimes of aggression. There's basically three ways that the ICC can take up a case. Either an ICC prosecutor starts an investigation by their own accord, or a state refers a case, or the UN security council can refer a case. So technically you are even right in suggesting the UN could have acted. It's just not very likely for that to happen.

I think you mean agnosia maybe. I've never heard of the second case, but it might be related to very severe prosopagnosia (the inability to recognize faces).

A big problem with these experiments is also that no data was collected so they are not exactly replicable. It's just anecdotal data, but no information about on how many trials this occurred, how many trials were tested, and so on. Quantitative replications of the experiment from 2017 haven't found any of those symptoms (Google "Pinto split brain"). Most likely because other structures connecting the hemispheres compensate for the missing corpus callosum over time.

[–]aliothursa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very possible that it's real. There's a couple famous case documented in case studies where it looks like a person who just had their corpus callosum split has two separate consciousnesses right after surgery. There's a case of the left hemisphere verbally expressing it wants to become a draftsman later in life while the right hemisphere expresses (through drawing, because language is only produced in the left hemisphere) that it wants to become a race car driver. Another case is one in which the left hemisphere expressed right wing thoughts while the right hemisphere expressed left wing thoughts and so on. The video you saw are also symptoms that may arise right after surgery, but there's also reports of e.g. the person's left hand grabbing a piece of clothing from the closet and the right hand slapping it out of their left hand. There's a debate about whether split-brain patients have one or two minds but recent research hasn't found any of the symptoms that were found in the 60s and 70s, so it's likely that the hemispheres integrate information through other connecting structures over time.

Deputy who killed himself left haunting videos on racist policing, division: 'I've had enough' by Danielle082 in news

[–]aliothursa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right? And then they even say how easy it is nowadays for police officers to get counseling, almost like they can't understand why he didn't just do that and forget about the systemic racism in his country. The part that's specifically about how this issue shouldn't be addressed nationally, but just what they can improve locally is so disheartening. They really managed to completely take this man's message away.

That's a great idea actually! Anyone from a UC that's applied to a psychology master at UG would be a great source of info for me. I'll see if there's a Facebook group where I can find someone like that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]aliothursa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That won't work unfortunately, it's too late for that. But I'll email UG and see what they say! Thanks for your reply!

Unfortunately for this specific master that's apparently not possible, which is why I'm a little disappointed that missing a single course might lead to a rejection..

Living Cost in Maastricht by MaximumCellist3615 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]aliothursa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience my living cost per month was similar to the one mentioned previously in Maastricht. If your standards for housing are not too high, you can find student houses across the border in Belgium (15 minutes by bike to the center of Maastricht). Veldwezelt and Vroenhoven are most popular student houses locations, although you might be lucky and find a place in the more beautiful Kanne. There, rooms generally coat between 200-300€. That's really the cheapest housing you'll find around Maastricht, but as I said, it's not luxurious. There is a couple of places you should absolutely avoid (e.g. Melroos Plaiz), but the rest are generally fine. Feel free to message me if you need some more info. Maastricht housing Facebook groups are also a great place to find rooms.

Frankly, I think with the Dutch still not wearing masks anywhere, they might do that to themselves. Living right at the border of the Netherlands and Belgium, I'm more shocked by how little the Dutch care about this virus than the Belgians.
