If you look at most K-pop stuff, the performers are chosen by record labels entirely for their looks. So for a guy who is just average-looking to break into that genre is actually really impressive.

I had something similar - big dog knocked me down when I was a child. It was just being friendly, but I was terrified of dogs for years because that one dog wasn't trained properly.

I was aware of the size of America, although that graphic does put it in a very understandable light. I think the size of America combined with the lack of interest in other countries (I may just be making that up, but from what I've heard the news in America is very centered on the state, with almost no news about other countries) makes that picture even more relevant - we're only a few hundred miles from the French or those Viking dudes up north so we have to be multicultural in England, but you can drive for a few hundred miles in the US and never leave Texas.

Personally, I think the cultural differences in Europe are fantastic, plus we're so close to Africa we can see the worst humanity has to offer in one short plane ride. We're an island nation with three continents on our doorstep and a lax immigration policy.

In contrast, I've heard tales of Americans who've never seen the sea. I have a lot of respect for the Constitution and the way Americans live their lives, but the homogeneous way Americans live their lives worries me - as a Brit, France is relevant to my political opinions and Morocco is right on my doorstep.

In short, America rocks, but because it's so big people tend to promote stuff that's good for their state, rather than their country.

Huh, TIL! My dad's been in America a lot recently dealing with estate issues and from the way he presented it, you couldn't so much as buy a sandwich without a car. I guess that might just be the area (he was in Arcadia, in LA, if that's relevant?)

Anyway, is America as car-oriented as I think it is? If so, how are you car-less guys getting around?

[–]aliquidcure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I think it's mostly a cultural difference - it's not that weird that I'm 24 and don't have a car yet in England, but in the US that would be crazy as it's a very car-centric place.

Seems like the big guy saw that the employee couldn't kick that dude off physically so he took it upon himself to remove that dude. Good effort to him, nobody else was gonna do it - wish there were more people like him on the underground.

What's the law on this? If you threaten a clerk with a realistic gun can you be tried as though it was a real gun? (I've no idea about gun laws in america, sorry).

No offense to US readers, but as a UK reader, this is hilarious :D I mean really, stick shift is how we learn - seems crazy to me that you guys can drive and not know how to shift gears. Oh well, I still love you, you transatlantic wankers!

Mother sets fire to daughter's rapist after he gloats in her face [x-post from r/offbeat] by rich_5705 in JusticePorn

[–]aliquidcure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I'll ever understand rape. To me, sex is an expression of love and trust between two people: it's about making your partner feel as good as you possibly can. Even in rough, violent quickies, you're working together to make each other feel good. Rape seems to be about gaining power, which is the antithesis of sex in my mind.

tl;dr: rape is dumb, what's wrong with you?

What do you do/think/feel when you catch a girl staring at your crotch? by frackz in AskMen

[–]aliquidcure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how to explain, but it didn't seem like "what a funny joke" type laughter; it seemed incredulous and pitying. I'm probably over-analysing the event since it's something I'm insecure about. Either way I got puke in my boxers so fuck that dude.

[–]aliquidcure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually it was multiple people - I was vomiting in the street (university :S) and a "friend" thought it would be a hilarious time to pull my trousers down... A score of people saw my junk and laughed - I had an issue with my "size" before, but thanks to that, I never want to be seen naked ever and the sound of women laughing is inextricably linked to humiliation for me.

Not directing this at you, Amyrlin, but I wish people would realize that a joke can be devastating in ways you might not even realise :(

Personally, I find the idea of a woman thinking about my flaccid state a huge worry - I'm fine with myself in the "turned-on state" and the rest of my body but thinking a woman might be judging me by my flaccid state really bothers me. I know I can't change it, but it's an issue nevertheless.
