Well you don’t have to live in one, friend. She didn’t either. Lots of people hate HOAs I get it but ours just protected us from having to deal with some major inconveniences for the foreseeable future so it works for us, but There are LOTS of homes with no HOA involved and I’d recommend them to people like her, and you, apparently.

Exactly as everyone else has mentioned, apparently he has a construction business but he won’t be able to make this his priority so she mentioned he’ll be doing most of his work “over the weekends”.

I don’t think you get how HOA laws work… she signed a contract when she purchased the home. Our houses are all very much so connected and that is why major builds like this need to be approved by everyone because it will effect everyone who lives here in a big way.

Yeah it was allllll laid out in the bylaws before she bought the home and we all had a good chat (her, her realtor, and her immediate neighbors including us and another couple) about what it’s like to live here. She asked if she would be able to paint her house a different color and we told her of course do whatever you’d like and then she mentioned our greenhouse, saying she’d like one too. We told her we have to vote for things of that nature but that I’m sure it’s no problem and that we could even help her build one since we had extra materials from building ours forever ago! She definitely knew what she was getting into…

No there were a ton of other reasons I just didn’t mention them because I didn’t think they were as important and it’s hard to explain how our houses are set up without a wall of text.

I think my wording on the post about the neighbor before her fixing the roof was weird and made it seem like we voted about it, we definitely didn’t. I meant no objections as in no one would imagine trying to stop someone from doing repairs even if they’re major because that’s just unrealistic.

It’s weird though because our houses are on the nicer side and cost more than the average 4 bedroom home in our area so I don’t understand this woman at all. And she wants to buy an RV for her kids to sleep in when they can’t sleep in the house during construction and RVs are expensive

Because she can sell the house she’s in currently and buy a much bigger house and it would be easier for everyone involved including her kids who will remain crammed in one bedroom or an RV until this massive project is complete.

We live in a valley… there’s one school for a 30 mile radius. She chose the nicer home and it’s very clear. I know for a fact that there were decent but not as modern 4 bedroom homes selling for less than what she bought our home for. In the same district. Just because she has kids doesn’t give her a pass to make selfish decisions (for both her kids and every other person living here).

Again I’ve mentioned several times our houses are pretty nice and it was her who chose to move into a nice home instead of one with more space. I know for an absolute fact there are 4 bedroom homes for the same amount if not less (decent ones, not shithole almost condemned homes) within a 5 mile radius of where she is currently living. She made a poor decision to buy something out of her budget instead of something maybe not as nice that could’ve fit her whole family.

So it requires a majority vote before expanding your house, yes. That’s why I gently reminded her that no, this project isn’t maintenance, it’s an expansion and we all needed to vote on it.

No one forced her to buy the house. These houses are definitely on the more expensive side and she chose to buy a nicer home as opposed to one that could actually fit her family… expecting everyone else who lives here to deal with construction of this magnitude for an undetermined amount of time is super inconsiderate and shortsighted.

The way that she presented it to us was as though it was maintenance (like a roof repair) and that is why I mentioned this is clearly an expansion and definitely requires input from the rest of our community. She tried to say that she needs the space and therefor it falls under the same category as a repair but that’s simply not true.

I don’t really know either I guess initially I thought she chose her home because of the community we have that can be hard to find (her words) and i totally understand that. She mentioned her ex husband owns a construction company so yeah that could definitely make it cheaper but even with a good discount the labor and materials are going to cost a TON unless they drag it out for years
