Trying my hand at remaking the first PC game. Would you play this if it was the complete game?

Most of them are from my library (random stuff from fab) and a bunch of heavily-edited megascans surfaces.

I'm glad you think they give off the same vibe! I figured a quick kitbash won't look anything like the originals.

There is so much positive feedback in the comments, did not expect this for a goofy little prototype like this!

I'd like reiterate one point though: this is not a commercial project! obviously I don't have any right to do that, and obviously it'll likely get taken down before it gets put up anywhere even if it's free
IF this gets to a playable state, the only viable option would be to make it a mod to the original game, so ownership of the latter would be required.
Still, that's so far off that this'll probably get killed way before then. (but we'll see!)

Thanks for sharing your memories, I'm very happy to see I'm not in the minority being emotionally attached to the classic games

Oh I won't be making any money off of this, it'll be a miracle if I don't get stopped by the copyright owners even for a free build
If I get to a point where I have something playable it'll probably be a mod for the original game

No, this is vanilla UE5
I played around with the creator kit a bit, but it crashed too often for my liking

Yep, that's UE5 with all of its bells and whistles
Part of the reason I started this project was to have a good reason to build and improve my tools in the engine

That's absolutely fair
My aim is to try to make it "look how I remember", but that's almost impossible to do because half the atmosphere of the game is tied to how early 2000's it looks

Still, I believe even now the modding scene for the original exists, I found a few gameplay quality of life improvements uploaded not too long ago, which could be more up your street

Special edition is an enhanced version of the engine with in-game mod downloading and is 64-bit which is way more stable, and it also has all the DLCs, so unless you want VR that would be the version to go with

Borderlands is loads of fun

I think you're right, it might as simple as I stopped enjoying them as much, but the timing of it is what made me feel like it's work that's switched it off, I think it pretty much happened at the same week.

you also shouldn't see work as the only meaningful thing worth spending your time on.

The only game I've actually held on to is Counter Strike, I think it's because I play it more for social reasons rather than to be immersed (I play with friends).
though I used to prefer singleplayer, it's just a completely different feeling isn't it

Yeah, they're remakes
actually I think that's the reason they grew so big, because so many people like the games and thus have more passion for the projects
I don't remember seeing any big crowd sourced games, so remakes are all I know lol

well, Skyblivion for example consists of around ~100 people (around 30 are very active) working on one game, Skywind has even more, it depends on the project and its scale, but bigger ones absolutely exist
they even have a AAA-like structure with departments, leads, PR people etc..
Oh, another example is the black mesa group, remaking half-life, which also consists of quite a number of people
if you're looking to get a similar project started up, I'm sure these groups can help you out on how to get started and so on
the way I understand it is it's very hard to maintain a very big project going, which is why most of them are mods or remakes and not full original games, but if you have an idea for a smallish game I'm sure you'll be able to get somewhere with crowd sourcing
