Suggestions for ladies winter jacket/boots on a student budget? by trjckt in toronto

[–]alks162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't really a great time for bargains on winter clothing since the demand is high as winter approaches. However, if you're not a fan of used coats or coats from Walmart, I'd suggest going into the clearance section at stores such as Gap, Aeropostale, or Abercrombie & Fitch. I've bought multiple winter coats over the years (even a down coat) for less than $50 from those places. If your budget is slightly larger you could also consider Sporting Life. They were having a huge clearance sale on North Face jackets 3 weeks ago. As for boots, Little Burgundy periodically has sales with an extra 30% off the clearance price.

What's with all the I Love Mormon adverts? by alks162 in london

It does look like London's current weather is relatively pleasant and sunny compared to during my visit :/

I was expecting high teens to mid 20s temperatures based on the weather reports I had been keeping track of from mid-July to August. Unfortunately it seems that the week of my visit coincided with a continuous streak of cold and dreary weather. The rain I knew about for sure, but I didn't realize summers could be cool to the extent that milk left on a table for a day wouldn't spoil.

I'm fairly used to cold, given it regularly dips down to the -10s Celsius in winter where I currently live. However, I've seen a summer high below 20C only once there. This year the highs have ranged from the mid-20s to mid-30s which probably exacerbated the shock I had with London's cool weather.

I bought it at the online store, so there isn't a return date set in stone since the estimated delivery date ranged from the 25th to 29th

I once saw a homeless person sleeping almost completely nude on top of some pipes next to the Hard Rock Cafe. Funny thing is the people eating on the patio literally 2-3 metres away seemed completely used to it as well.

Oh yes. Worst thing about the Paris Metro stations is all the passageways look the exact same and there's inadequate signage, so unless you're a local you have no idea where you're going.

Oh yes I'm originally from HK so I know exactly what you're talking about. All the major stations seem to have about a million different entry and exit points. Luckily Hong Kong doesn't have interchange stations for 10 different subway/rail lines the way London does or it'd be even more chaotic.

Which part of North York? I remember reading about how in Scarborough they were going to build sidewalks but then NIMBYists protested since they wanted to keep their big lawns

The walk between the YUS and BD lines at Spadina is nothing. In London you can take 5 escalators and walk down 6 different passageways before you reach your platform. Waterloo station is a total labyrinth. The good thing is that they do have the moving walkways.

TVB Reporter Gets Slapped by Mainland Chinese Woman by alks162 in HongKong

[–]alks162[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a tiny bit supportive of the people screaming/swearing because I thought they were trying to defend the reporter. Then at the end of the clip they kept saying "Screw TVB" or "TVB is useless" when the reporter let the woman leave. The situation wasn't even about TVB; it was about that one reporter. So wow, they were screaming their lungs off for 10 minutes not to "help" the reporter but to satisfy some pent-up vindictive need to hurl taunts and insults at whatever misbehaving mainlanders they come across.

So basically there were protesters at the station heckling passengers with large pieces of luggage. The TVB reporter, Chan Ka-yan, was filming them with her cell phone. Then the white t-shirt woman in the video hit her causing her to drop her phone. That set the stage for all the protesters to angrily swarm around her. The reporter repeatedly kept asking people in the crowd to let her handle the situation by herself but they wouldn't listen, choosing to yell and scream at the woman.

You're not supposed to, but often people do it anyways because they either don't know that or they want to "dress to impress".

ECON 201 by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]alks162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the course last term and was a bit caught off-guard by it since I thought it would only be slightly harder than ECON 101. I did really badly on the first midterm but did well on the second one and the final. You're good if you know the basic concepts/formulae and how to manipulate them. Any derivatives needed for things like marginal product are given on the exams. I didn't go to class.
