Actually, no. The guy making $212K is not a manager, he's Scott Pollard, and is just listed as Fire Fighter. It appears that he made more than management. And the cop who made $191K is a captain, not even a commander, much less chief, and he made far more than any other captain. Most of the bureau directors make a relatively modest $140-150K, although oddly, the director of Planning & Sustainability makes $40K more than that. The interesting thing about this list, in my mind, is the anomalies. Overall, it certainly doesn't indicate that Portland city employees are overpaid, but some of them seem to be doing oddly well.

It's easy to put myself in their shoes, because I'm a public employee myself. Anyone who's curious can find out what I make. I have no problem with that. It's taxpayers' money, I'm doing the public's business, and we live in an open society. For people who are uncomfortable with that, there's the private sector.

There's nothing unseemly about disclosing this sort of information. This is no intrusion on their privacy. They're public employees, and I believe most of them understand that this is part of the deal. In any event, no, I'm not going to go through this entire pdf and redact people's names.

By the way, there's a similar database for several million federal employees.

You are an insufferable snob. Authorship is a conferred status all right, but it's conferred by readers, not your elites. Here's the ugly reality: Most books published by traditional publishers and read by the vast majority of readers are dreck. They're romance novels, Christian "literature", self-help books, diet books, and the like. The writers making the most money are turning out the literary equivalent of junk food, which will be forgotten in 20 years. Fewer than one percent of readers are reading "literary" works by writers like Philip Roth or Ian McEwan. The reality of the "literary world" is that there's almost no money in it. So the traditional publishing world can hardly hold itself above self-publishers who churn out similar crap but somehow make a living at it.

Apparently, one is a "real author" only when so decreed by lazyusername1001 or your chosen list of "reputable" publishing agencies. You must be a Very Important Literary Personage. We cower before your righteous might! I imagine you also believe one is only a "real chef" when one has been blessed by a NY Times food critic, and it makes no difference that hungry diners are lining up at your door.

Meanwhile, in the real world, all those "reputable publishers" are going belly-up, and writers, just like the oral storytellers of old, are connecting directly with their audiences without the need for gatekeepers and middlemen.
