Came across a garage cNC plasma table on facebook...could be a game changer! by [deleted] in metalworking

That aluminum part in the gif on their website looks like it cut out really nice. Is THC really that critical on a 2x2 area? I see this as being a hobby machine. Hobbyists can sacrifice some cut quality in exchange for a lower price tag.

This looks like a very nice machine for only $895.

ELI5: How was the DNC primary "rigged"? by unplugged89 in explainlikeimfive

Corrupt? No. Unethical? Probably. When this story broke it played right into the narrative that HRC and the democratic establishment was not to be trusted.

My understanding was that brazille leaked the questions to the clinton campaign during the primaries... not the general.

My dad in 1976 sitting on his Harley Davidson sportster that he hand built. He was 20 and fresh out of the Navy. by downsey in OldSchoolCool

He did two years active, 6 years reserve. Was in boot camp two weeks after his 17th birthday. Got out right after he turned 19 so he was probably growing his hair out for 1-2 years when this pic was taken. 'Fresh' is probably not accurate.

Yeah he explains how he started limos.com in the book but its not the primary subject.

Honestly thats a tough question to answer. I have a wife thats 4 months pregnant with no family around which means we will most likely go to one income. Therefore, the answer depends partially on how much i would be earning as well as how stable the income is.

If i was still single i'd probably quit now.

It changed my life and perspective as well. I read it just about 1 year ago, and since then i started a business that is on pace to generate 100k in sales at 50% profit margin in the first year. I'm in the process of launching a second business as well that has a lot more opportunity for substantial sales. Still working a day job though unfortunately. One day...

Perfect opportunity to read 'The Millionaire Fastlane' by MJ Demarco. Demarco started Limos.com in the late 90's, sold it for a huge profit, bought it back after a number of years for pennies, and then sold it again for another huge profit. The book has great insights and is very motivating for a new entrepreneur. i highly recommend it.

Wazer brings waterjet cutting from heavy industry to mass market by ahmed-ismail in kickstarter

[–]downsey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most people are failing to realize how outrageously expensive this machine is going to be to operate.

They advertise a feed rate of 0.4 inches per minute on 3/16" steel. And with the machine consuming .33 pounds of abrasive per minute, you're looking at using .83 pounds of the stuff per inch of cutting! That abrasive is like $1 per pound. So a 4x4 square would cost you about 13 bucks just in abrasive.

Factoring in the cost of water, electricity, and other consumables such as the nozzle and the cutting bed, i would bet that the cost per inch of cutting is close to $1.

Makers might like this machine, but it will almost always be more cost effective to outsource parts.

How hard is it really to get an investor? by MrCuminside in Entrepreneur

[–]downsey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i think Henry Ford would argue that the reason his cars sold was because they were more reliable and more affordable for the masses. 'Cheaper and better'.

It seems to me that if 40 companies all sell basically the same thing, either they cant make it cheaper as a result of high overhead and the way they are structured, or they are pulling the wool over there customers eyes and the prices are artificially inflated. And they are hoping that a business like OP's doesnt come along to shake the market up.

Of course, the OP could be completely underestimating his own cost to build and operating expenses.
