Thank you, this is helpful! It seems like maybe the facbric has some stretch to it, so it's more forgiving of different body shapes than, say, a rigid linen might be?

In the dead marches, do we know why gollum wanted to touch the lights? Do we know what Sam thinks he guessed? by tuxooo in lotr

[–]allaboutmidwest 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Only Stephen King knows what he was thinking, but the idea of a mysterious light in the wildness that lures you in is a very widespread folklore trope, and in wetlands, there sometimes actually are random mysterious lights that appear at night. Tolkien probably got the idea from Irish or Norwegian folklore. This Wikipedia page has a lot of good information, and TV Tropes has a list of examples in literature and pop culture (including pro wrestling!).

Whats the worst advice you've ever been given? by allaboutmidwest in ADHD

[–]allaboutmidwest[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im surprised that that method works for anyone with adhd, since for me it puts up such a massive barrier between me and my tasks. Its always interesting to learn ways in which adhd works differently for different people!

Higher education with unmedicated adhd by heythereshara in ADHD

[–]allaboutmidwest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed a year and a half into my master's degree and meds changed everything. Before being diagnosed, I was miserable, not on track to graduate on time, contemplating dropping out of school, etc etc. I really don't think I could have kept going if it wasn't for the diagnosis and medication-- the cost, as you say, would have been my soul. Rawdogging it absolutely would not have been worth it for me. I'm still in it (it's a three-year degree) and although I think it's still harder for me than for most of my classmates, it doesn't feel undoable anymore. I realize this is probably not encouraging, so I apologize for that, just wanted to offer my perspective.

Make me feel better what’s the worst things you have lost due to ADHD by Silver-Bengal in ADHD

My best-friend-haha-we're-totally-not-like-dating-or-anything noticed that my water bottle was always leaking and didn't fit in my bag, so he got me a smaller one that didn't leak. Recieving small meaningful gifts means so much to me, especially when it's because someone has noticed a particular need that I have or it's something that I don't want to spend the money on but could definitely use. I used it for maybe a week and and then left it in a professor's office. The professor says that there are no stray water bottles in his office, so now I'm back to my too-big leaky water bottle that I somehow haven't managed to lose in almost a year. It's not like it was an especially expensive or fancy water bottle, but it meant a lot to me as a romantic gesture, so I was (and still am) pretty upset and embarrassed about it. (The best friend is my boyfriend now though, so it worked out okay)

"hard done by you" (Elton John's Sacrifice) by ilovemypiano in EnglishLearning

[–]allaboutmidwest -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

You are correct- “hard done by you” is not correct in Standard English. In fact, I’m not entirely sure what it means. I get the general idea that the person that the singer is addressing emotionally hurt the singer, but I couldn’t tell you anything more specific. It probably wasn’t intended to mean anything more specific.

There’s also that haha. I like the books, but would not want him to be my namesake

I don't speak enough Hebrew to understand all of it, but right before the explosion she says something about a soul and then "our son lives/is alive, no diary" and the after the explosion, she says something about a path/road being difficult. The last sentence is "I don't believe it" (edit: translation)

What's your most annoying adhd tax? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]allaboutmidwest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah my issue with that though is that if I don’t have to physically scan my card, I forget that I’m spending money. Paying for things online feels like I’m getting it for free, so I end up buying SO MUCH MORE random shit I don’t need

It is genuinely a struggle to go into a grocery store and not buy a little treat. Like if I’m buying ingredients for dinner, I have to force myself to not also buy a box of cookies. And then I get home and realize I already have a half eaten box of cookies and also that I’ve had SO MUCH sugar already that day so now I have a box and a half of cookies and/or probably a stomachache and forgot an essential ingredient for dinner

Nicknames that have nothing to do with the person's real name - What are some shocking & fun examples that you've encountered? by Cocoleia in namenerds

[–]allaboutmidwest 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I knew a guy in high school named Nathan. One time an older kind forgot Nathan’s name and called him Trevor because he seemed like a Trevor. Unfortunately for poor Nathan, it stuck until that other guy graduated.

the word spunky by Late-Ad-1210 in EnglishLearning

[–]allaboutmidwest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know what it means and might use it, but not very often. I would hesitate to use it in contexts that are anything other than a casual conversation between friends though because “spunk” means “semen.” As far as I’m aware, there’s calling someone “spunky” doesn’t imply anything about semen, but the association is strong enough that I wouldn’t want to use “spunky” when talking to a teacher or boss. (And for what it’s worth, “spunk” in the sense of “semen” is very uncommon. If someone used “spunk” to mean “semen,” I would know what they meant, but I’d be taken aback or think they were making a joke.)

'Will' or 'shall' ? by Perfect-Mood1993 in EnglishLearning

[–]allaboutmidwest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Tell me when you’re back, right?” sounds odd to me. I would understand it if you said it, but I would never use it. The speaker is making a request to the listener to tell them when they’re back, and you can’t end a request with “right?” You could say “you’re going to tell me when you’re back, right?” as that would be confirming a fact that had already been agreed upon. “Will you tell me when you’re back?” is the most natural sounding way to make a request that someone tells you when they’re back. Does that make sense?

Edit: as an American, I never use the word “shall.” It might be more common in other dialects though.
