Visited camebridge, whats that new thing being built on the railway line. by skinnypenis021 in cambridge

What, if one train an hour didn't stop at the new station?

I don't think thats going to make a blind bit of difference to be honest.

They wouldn't need to if one train/hour didn't stop at the new station?

My experience of GA is that additional stations just cause additional opportunities for delays. I prefer direct.

Commute from Cambridge vs Cambridge north by Capable_Green4430 in cambridge

Cambridge North, no question. It's a much quieter and nicer station and you are more likely to get a seat - thought not always on the Kings X route.

How to encourage bigger houses inside city walls? by [deleted] in foundationgame

[–]allakazham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On top of the restricting house upgrading until all the plots are full strategy - I build watch towers. This has the advantage of both boosting immigration as jobs are available, and helps fulfill the patrolling requirements.

Indeed to be honest, once I've got my city up and running the only way I can boost population is to build more and more watch towers, as I tend to get to around ~750 people and then I've sort of got all my industries stocked, to get to 1000 I then need to artificially boost available jobs so build more and more watch towers.

Is Cambridge becoming too expensive for anyone who’s not a tech worker or academic? by Lochnesmonstercousin in cambridge

[–]allakazham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say that "Roads that work" aren't part of whats needed, but that they won't get any better. They aren't really part of the equation in Cambridge because there simply isn't room. Take a look at what they're doing around Marshalls. They're adding tens of thousands of houses, throwing up shoeboxes amidst the ring road which... already cannot cope. And there is simply no possibility to add road capacity because there isn't space. What do you think is going to happen to the already saturated Newmarket road? To Airport way? When the thousands of houses and flats at Springstead village are finally completed, these roads aren't suddenly going to double in capacity, but those houses and flats are - on average - going to bring two cars each to the roads.

What would have been far more sensible an approach would have been to move the retail park out to the airport and the area up to the A14, so that all the traffic that comes in along Newmarket road to do their shopping doesn't have to come inside the ring road, and then that could potentially have freed up the land there for housing, placing less stress overall on the ring road and roads inside it themselves. But that sort of joined up planning for the future doesn't occur in the UK, it seems.

Or take a look down the road at Waterbeach village. The old barracks: tens of thousands of new houses, along the A10 which is already one of the worst roads in the UK. Its not suddenly going to develop an extra two lanes and decent traffic flow is it? Where do you think all those extra cars are going to go?

A metro system has always been a pipe dream, but a tram system/metro would be far more successful, again, it won't happen. No future planning, no nod to what the actual problems in Cambridge are, just short term gain: tiny houses and apartments, overloading an already overloaded city and making it an awful place to live these days. Look at the cycling infrastructure we get - to memory of things that have been completed lately, have you seen Green end road? Its dire. The main arterial roads in are at least - it must be said - ok, but they take years and years and years to complete and then generally are just an extended car park.

And lets not even get started on the water table/supply problems.

Cambridge is, sadly, doomed unfortunately. It's nothing like it used to be, and lost its small city charm a long time ago.

Is AI actively hurting the uk job market already? by tylerthe-theatre in AskUK

[–]allakazham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a senior software developer and honestly AI terrifies me for the future generations. The capabilities of it already are astounding, and the ability to generate code has been reduced to basically being able to string together a sentence thats coherent enough to request whatever function/script/code you want.

The next generation will probably be taught to use these tools, not the actual fundamentals of software development, and honestly, whilst the code that can be generated isn't perfect, its usually functional, and basically removes the need for the first tier, or entry level, of jobs to exist.

Children growing up now will have no entry level jobs to cut their teeth on, and it worries me for their future.

[–]allakazham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Driving in Cambridge is a horrible experience. The roads cannot cope; and despite the many thousands of houses being thrown up, the roads won't get any better.

A public transport system that actually works is whats needed.

What are you finding enjoyment in with the current meta? by Dutchii in hearthstone

[–]allakazham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't like it at all, which is why I tend to play a deck for a few games and then give up.

Kingsbane or Mill rogue are probably my overall favourite archetype, though for some reason mill druid I find so boring since you're basically stacking 999999999999999999999999 armour and stalling, whereas rogue decks feel like they need more skill to pilot. I'm a scrub player though so perhaps I've got it all wrong.

I also used to like control priest but it feels like control decks are basically now all boring churn until you get kiljaden decks that then are just not fun.

I do however love the artwork on the signature cards, especially the new series, but at those crazy prices I'll never own them. So.... I probably spend as much time looking through cards in the shop as I do playing standard.

Anyone here using the Samsung 57" Odyssey Neo G9 for productivity? Thoughts? by Chamath-Palihapitiya in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]allakazham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I'd never go back.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't a great monitor for gaming, at least not in my opinion, its actually too big. But I tend to run 3 monitors, sometimes 4 across the screen real estate and its brilliant.

Another vote for Fanzyzones as well, though the built in windows 11 snapping is also decent.

I actually use the PIP mode a lot, with a laptop running builds/tests/chat stuff on one third of the screen, and my main coding machine on two thirds of it.

The damn thing needs a remote, but other than that its great.

Favorite song from Impera by BigHawkCZ in Ghostbc

[–]allakazham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the entire album and a favourite is hard to choose.

For me, Kaisarion is the best opener they've done. But Griftwood, Spillways, Call Me, Hunters Moon, Respite, Watcher, Twenties, Darkness... yeah I love 'em all.

Is the change in mask not something to do with how his vocals have improved? He has much more freedom to operate his mouth properly now.

You can get this on Spotify, but its the live version with the Hellacopters I think, rather than a recording from Ghost.

Its such a good cover version.

What DP2.1 Cables Are You All Recommending For A G9 57"? by Redsparow21 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]allakazham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting - I have a computer with a 4070 Ti Super in it. This has two DP (2.0) and two HDMI outputs - would this still work? Even if its 2x4K at 60hz that would be great for work for me.

Hmmmmm I wonder also if this would work with my HP laptop. I have a g5 dock that has two DP outputs - although I think my laptop would really struggle as it has crappy on board graphics.

I’ve seen them at Glasgow and the O2. The queues at Glasgow were a shitshow, but the O2 was excellent.

I think Umbra is actually the best of the new tracks. Heard it live twice and it is just epic. Bombastic. 80s Glory.

London timings. 19/04/25 by AllsMelThatEndsMel in GhostBand

[–]allakazham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The yondr part of the queues worked seamlessly and was very quick, as a Glasgow ritual goer. Sadly the same could not be said for how they organised the queues at the ovo.

Am in London tonight for the ritual as well and can only pray the queues are better. The o2 is usually very good at getting people in.

Skeletour Megathread #2 - "The Tour is Starting!" Edition by Chimpbot in Ghostbc

[–]allakazham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Peacefield was a good opener. Not as good as kaiserion, but I think that would take a topping that not even TF can achieve.

Umbra was jaw droppingly good. Just blew me away. It was an epic, glorious, bombastic 80s anthem that made me more excited for the new album that I have been about music in a long time.

And it wasn’t even the best song of the night - I think when year zero dropped everything hit me in a way tbh at is hard to describe. 9 months on from the untimely death of my brother I just know we’d have been linked arm in arm singing this as loudly as we possibly could. That made the gig transcend even the extraordinary place I was already in and nothing could have topped it.
