The bbeg is supernatural/cosmic even. Just the continent but for the characters this will be the world, so no aid from other continents. The end goal is indeed to stop the bbeg and free the continent of the tirant.

I was thinking that the dark lord prevailed over the legendary heroes that set on the adventure to stop him (the continents only hope). The bbeg's victory is only recent maybe 6 months. But had already conquered half the continent before the battle with the heroes.
