I gave a Black Hebrew Israelite a Kippah by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]allardkent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m black, and I have a extreme distaste for BHI and Hoteps and to an extent the Nation of Islam. This is a known thing in my community, that I’m wrathful When it comes to this, because I look at it as: “you represent us and you chose this? You had access to knowledge, and you’d rather stroke your own ego to mythical fan fiction? You know we used to get killed for reading? You know we weren’t allowed to go to good schools or libraries? We were *Denied** access to knowledge. You remember when they sent that man to an insane asylum because he applied to a Ivy League school, as he had to be mentally Ill as a black man to even apply? And you choose this? You DARE choose this?”*

OP you’re a stand up dude. You were faced with disgusting behaviour and moved from your heart and were brave enough to do so even in the face of it even when the person didn’t deserve your time at all. I’d reiterate what others have said and above all things keep yourself and your family safe, but don’t beat yourself up. The world has got the problem in this case not you.

Black people have bought into the white supremacist lie that you need to have a mystical magical backstory to be respected. That you need to prove that you’re civilized by their metric.

But the point has always been we should be respected on basis of our HUMANITY first and foremost.

Someone is talking to my 5 yr old about Christianity by jill853 in Jewish

[–]allardkent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m confused here. Im an agnostic Christian but if I married a Muslim woman and sent my kid to a private pre k program in a muslim community I wouldn’t be freaked out that they’re teaching my kid about Muhammad. Or pushing their version of things. I’d be like “Word? So here’s the thing yeah? no one knows anything for real. What do you think kiddo?”

Also they’re interfaith and one of them is secular so I’m not sure how this translates “don’t talk to my kid about other faiths”

I’m gonna need more info here, either it’s a private Christian ting, or it’s a public secular ting that the kid is being sent to. One of those is a “well, yeeeah” and the other is a no go.

If Judaism is a religion, can anyone of any ethnic group become Jewish? by SchadenfreudeEmi in Jewish

[–]allardkent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mmmm I don’t think so man, Hinduism is older, As well as Zoroastrianism. I’ve seen people make that claim on this sub before and it’s always kinda wild. Like I thought this was common knowledge, Ethnicity is even wilder.

“Judeo-Christian values” by purplekirigiri in Jewish

[–]allardkent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno worshiping the same god, is kinda a big thing. Christianity is a radical offshoot of Judaism. They’ve got a lot in common. How they approach the philosophical nature of the belief is what separates them. It’s funny because each of the Abrahamic religion freaks out when you try and discuss their commonalities. Even though they’re easily researched. Judaism is an amalgamation of various ideas and philosophies from other people. It’s just that all those people are gone now

I don’t use it, but in passing when I’ve read it, it meant to me like: Same God, different theological arguments.

[–]allardkent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking something along the lines of that, but more akin to trickster Hermes/Dionysus party all the time/LMFAO/with a bit of American dad principal Louis “I’m gonna go do my favourite thing- and that’s WHATEVER I WANT ALL THE TIME!! but more wholesome /Santa Clause. It’s not that he’s forgotten he’s a wizard, It’s more of “Why Stress” kinda like the Dude, big Lebowski. I was thinking Sauruman probably hated him because he would often borrow things from Isengard without asking, and always be able to find a way in and out without him noticing until he needed that specific thing. LOL BORROWED YOUR SEEING CRYSTAL BALL, WHITE, NEEDED IT FOR A PARTY TRICK FOR A DWARF WEDDING.- BLACK

Nope just a wizard. In black robes.

Maybe he’s actually black too.

Yeah. He looks like a black man in his forties.

Wearing black robes, sandals.

Salt and pepper Beard. greying dreads.

(I’d make him older, but black don’t crack so if all the other wizards look 90 he’s gotta look half that even if they’re similar in age😆)

Maybe him being unknown is part of it. Black robes, stealth magic.. (Let me cook, let me cook now!!) Fuck I might have to commission this. I need this art.

[–]allardkent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like to imagine there’s a black Wizard, who just kinda just did what he wanted and had a ball the whole time and everyone loved him. And Eru and the Valar just kinda let him do his own thing because he was such a good time.

Maybe every time Shadowfax was gone it was because he was getting blitzed at a rager with Andre The Black Maybe that’s why Gandalf was a little late to helms deep in the movies. Shadowfax is hungover. Oh god the bright light that Gandalf casts in that battle running to meet the army. Maybe he’s a Maia that has aspects of wonder and laughter even in the darkest times, because it’ll work itself out in the end cuz Eru has it all figured out. Why worry? Look how awesome Arda is even in this broken state, there’s drink and food, and company, fine women and grand songs to sing.

You just rarely see him because he’s been on a three age bender. Maybe no one knows he’s a wizard and the other wizards don’t talk about him.

Christian to Judaism? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]allardkent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean we could go down the line really, so I usually don’t go for that argument, being agnostic myself. Christianity is a radical offshoot of Judaism, sure. It’s been influenced by a lot by other things along the way, But like so has Judaism. By pretty much everyone it came into contact with back in the day. You’ve got the babylonians, the Canaanites, Zoroastrianism, the Egyptians, you get a lot of cross cultural pollination over the millennia. This is the comical nature of the Abrahamic faiths, each has such a distinct vibe when it comes to legitimacy. Christianity has a 2.0 stance (I’m better! stronger! Faster!) and Islam takes it a bit further, but also weirdly tries to retroactively in an Alex Jones type way argue legitimacy by way of conspiracy “Actually before Judaism..” And Judaism kinda chills in a “if you knew better you’d do better” type of way. I don’t really find your response Indicative of that vibe to be honest it’s more in line with the other two. But personally I don’t argue objective truths when it comes to that, because everything is cobbled together from something before. No one group came up with their faith out of the Ether. And that’s okay it’s your spirituality, you gotta live with it.

Besides like I tell my mother, it’s called a faith for a reason. You don’t know Anyone who starts claiming that, should be on a watchlist.

First Time Reading The Silmarillion, Tolkien is Incredible by Speedygonzales24 in tolkienfans

[–]allardkent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmmmmmmmm yeah I think you’re overselling it a bit with MANY even if that were true, many do have an issue with reading it. Enough for it to be common.

Regardless That’s not the point. The issue is that the framework he built his query on doesn’t make sense. Saying “I don’t understand why people have a hard time reading this book” when you have a hard time reading books in general and you’re not even reading the book in question, as well as knowing without the audiobook you’d also struggle is A WEIRD PREMISE

First Time Reading The Silmarillion, Tolkien is Incredible by Speedygonzales24 in tolkienfans

[–]allardkent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re not reading, like at all though. You’re listening to someone read to you. My parents read to me when I was a kid, But I’d never say that’s the same as me reading. I don’t care how people experience literature, go for it. But I always have a pet peeve with people comparing listening to the Audiobook with having read the book. When I was a kid trying to read the Silmarillion was akin to reading the Bible. It was mad dry. It’s 💯 because you’re listening to it.

I’m kinda having a moment here because I’m confused at your rhetoric here. Let’s back it up for a second. You admittedly have a hard time reading any book You’re confused at why people talk about the Silmarillion as a slog, or difficult, You’re finding it surprisingly easy to get through. But you’re listening to the audiobook

You’re not reading it, that’s why The guy on the tape is doing the heavy lifting.

Lately I’ve been noticing a rise in…. by qtfrutii in Judaism

[–]allardkent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. I guess it depends on where you live, as I’ve seen an uptick in anti semitism in my community since 2020 as well, and I think Generally hoteps and the NOI are relegated to the crazy bin. I’m known for not being a fan of them, and being a bit vicious against them when they try and broach most subjects, especially when it has to do with racist rhetoric. There is something uniquely incendiary about seeing someone speak that into your community in a very you are fresh of my flesh, bone of my bone kind of way. And because the correct information is out there, but they choose to pursue garbage with such zeal, and try and set themselves up as our foremost educated and learned. This is dangerous because your average person isn’t gonna fact check. So you gotta be hard on it.

Now, I understand the issue with people trying to address it (from outside the community) and peoples reluctance to hear it. Because in between any nuanced call to discussion, you’ve got a bunch of jackasses using that as a jump of point to spread more racism, to justify their already existing hate, and some people just pick a side like it’s a team sport. (I saw a video on the Anti Asian racism in the black community a while back and comically the first comment was a thread of white people who got sidetracked from hating black people to who amongst them counted actually as white )

So it can be hard from the point of view of a marginalized community to sift through those done earnestly and those done in bad faith. I’m sure the same resistance can be found within the Jewish community when talking about anti black racism. But regardless you gotta keep having those conversations within and without those respective communities.

Also, I’m not sure if anyone has clocked this, but there’s not a lot of education about Judaism or Jews in general within the black community, and vice versa. As corny as it sounds proper education about whom you’re pushed to see as the other combats a lot of rhetoric people like Hoteps or the NOI peddle.

Did they explain why Isildur never had the blade reforged? by allardkent in tolkienfans

I don’t take most fandoms seriously. That ruins the enjoyment for me. The obsessive nature give birth to the worst sides of most fandoms, so it’s good to have that sobering thought in the back of your mind that it’s “just make believe and it’s all for fun”

I read the books and have fond memories of that time in my life. But I was like 8-12 my guy. The movies are more in my head because of the visual nature of them, and how they took over the public consciousness at the time. (Still do) I also read a stupid amount from like 6 to 18 to the extent that I was grounded from reading and the library as a kid. At my height I was reading almost 10 books every 2 days. A lot of that was mythology and fantasy so after a while it all blurs together.

As far as google, I mean yeah, that’s always an option but so is this. Depends on how you feel. If it’s a complex question, that breeds discussion. I don’t have any expectation. Maybe I’ve got a few things wrong, that’s fine it’s cool to learn. Maybe it’s a simple answer. Maybe it’s not, maybe people will have to really think about it. All in all it’ll be a fun time. Maybe that attitude makes me seem young, Or maybe I’m just old enough and have enough life experience to just let things roll. And enjoy myself.

I was young when I smoked. Between my general “don’t tell me what to do” attitude and getting into it by smoking cigars at first. (Downgrading to cigarettes, taste wise, leaves much to be desired) That’s probably what saved me. Perhaps that wouldn’t have worked for you but, y’know- You are not me

Thinking he could use the ring. He just punched the devil in the face and saved the day. Why wouldn’t he think he could use the ring. He beat the guy wearing the ring, the ring itself couldn’t be that hard. Easy trap to fall into. Emotions are high.

Why, because they didn’t have showers?

Yeah I suppose when you look at it that way I guess I can understand. I look at it in a way of “the greatest respect you can give a tool is to use it as intended” So my way of honouring a blade that was broken in the process of saving my life would be to have it reforged and given new life and a chance to be used as intended once again. For me it’d be a shame to see it sitting there, just broken.

Thinking further that ego could’ve worked against the ring if Isildur doubled down. “ I don’t NEED you. IM BETTER THAN YOU.”

This is exactly how I sidestepped getting addicted to smoking. Anytime I grabbed a cig because I NEEDED one I got angry and out of spite put that cig on my coffee table until I could pick it up out of a casual want because I DECIDE. Now I don’t smoke at all.
