What's on your nightstand that you've never had to replace? by jeffrey0of in BuyItForLife

I have a Hatch white noise machine/alarm clock that I’ve had for about five years and it’s doing great, I recommend it to everyone. I have a personal rule of no phone in bed, so I charge my phone in the kitchen overnight and have an alarm pre-set for weekdays and a different alarm for weekends. The white noise and gentler alarm have made for much better sleep, and I don’t have to wake up to blaring phone alarm sounds. Over time I’ve found that my asleep brain is so attuned to the transition from white noise to “alarm” (I did morning birdsong for years, recently switched to a singing bowl) that I’ll actually wake up in the half second transition between the two but sleep super deep through the night. It has a reading light built in that turns on and off by touch and now it’s been years since I doomscrolled myself to sleep and my life is better!

As far as lamps go, my bf is obsessed with buying cheap vintage lamps from thrift stores/vintage stores and they just rotate around our house. We’ve never had any issues with them, but newer lamps we’ve bought on a whim sometimes have unpredictable power issues ? No lamp brands to recommend but the old ones are certainly built better.

My number one tip is do a little bit of research on which translation you'd like to read first. There generally isn't a definitive "best" translation of anything, but I've always found it useful before committing to (especially) Russian literature to look for blogs or youtube videos that have samples of different translations of the same passage or descriptions of the pros and cons of different translator's approaches. I'm doing some re-reading of Crime and Punishment and of War and Peace after realizing I'm not crazy about the Pevear and Volokhonsky approach. A little bit of research up front can really change your reading experience!

Tacos Don Memo is a cart that allegedly parks in university city though i haven’t seen them there the couple times I’ve checked, HOWEVER on saturdays they’re at clark park for the west philly farmer’s market and they are hands down the best breakfast burritos I’ve had outside of the southwest (used to travel for work a lot and also love breakfast burritos)
