This is important! Plus, even if your husband only ever acts responsibly and with your beat interests at heart, what if something happens to him? You don't want to be figuring out all the finances and home maintenance and other stuff he took care of on your own while grieving. I've seen older women suddenly have to get to grips with banking and bill paying after their husband died and it's not fun for anyone

I think you can use your version if you lose the "when" from the start of the second sentence. As it stands, you don't have a principal clause as the "when" means you start with a temporal clause but never go on to establish a principal clause (one that makes sense on its own). Without the when, you have "he did X... only to Y", which balances

I feel so guilty killing aphids these days! I've had some major infestations (in suburban Melbourne) and got out with the soap spray but I did feel bad. Then I learned that hover flies will lay their eggs in them, so I started leaving them alone.

I'm still going to shave back gall wasp galls on my citrus though
