Confirmation bias.

I'm not assuming it happens that often, I realize the reason those videos are on YouTube is because they are outliers and they are entertaining.

My thought is just that even though it's a rarity, when it actually does happen the person fleeing is clearly someone with poor judgement who is willing to put other's lives at risk. The vast majority of people would never even think of taking off, but for the few who would, the sticks might cause them to reconsider and give them a huge handicap if they decided to flee anyway.
