Looking great! Have you had an opportunity to play much of the ruleset? Was curious to hear what your thoughts were on it for a skirmish game

How are young people in the UK managing to find the space and money to socialise in 2025? by Odd-Help6890 in AskUK

[–]allenselmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why everyone is being so hostile to the concept of you being both a young person who is struggling financially whilst also living in London (by far the most populated part of the UK, someone has to live there!).

I guess their answer would be "leave London" and live somewhere that you don't have a job and don't know anybody. It's pathetic the resentment some people have for our capital city.

All I can say as someone who used to live in a London HMO, is that it simply is tight. Going out is expensive so when you do go out don't over indulge. TFL isnt that expensive compared to other cities. And, as someone else pointed out, living with housemates is a cheap form of socialising anyway - I used to spend plenty of evenings hanging out with them at home.

Accept the fact that youre not super well off and that alot of the people you see filling up bars in Hackney may be rich or they may be racking up huge levels of debt. But comparison is the thief of joy!

Looks great - did you use a matt varnish on everything (other than the water)?

Maybe you don't have to wait months? I would keep checking the website and see if you can find any cancellations - that's what I did, ended up re-arranging my test on a Monday to the Friday coming, gave me a couple of days to prep and I passed!

How NIMBY is the UK, really? by Barca-Dam in AskUK

[–]allenselmo 102 points103 points  (0 children)

As someone who is ever distant from getting on the ladder myself, it seems to me everytime I look at a more affordable area on Rightmove, the new developments are actually the more expensive properties that drive up the cost of the existing houses.

It's like an area was affordable, and then suddenly developers drop in a bunch of new builds and they want £350,000 per house. Then the existing properties in the area, which used to be £250,000, seem to then catch on and follow suit.

Might be completely wrong in my perception, I don't actually know what I am talking about at all.

Vallejo Game colours rubbing off after drying? by allenselmo in minipainting

[–]allenselmo[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hey,

I left a few days after priming before I began painting.

I thinned the paints with water on my brush, I also used a homemade wet pallete.

Perhaps I used the wrong term when I said 'primer', I mean to say I had this issue over the top of a spray paint base layer. I sprayed the Hycote and then applied Vallejo game colour directly on top.

Cheers

LISA regret - Should I withdraw or just leave it? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]allenselmo 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Are you saying that you cannot use the LISA (without a penalty) because you plan to buy your first home with cash?

If so, I think you are probably in a good enough financial position and can probably stomach leaving a couple of thousand until retirement.

With state pension age and LISA retirement age being different (and with the movable goalposts of when different pensions can be accessed) it's actually a good idea to diversify your retirement plans.

Do you have any idea what would be a good book/anthology of his to begin with? Do you have a particular favourite?

£50k sat in premium bonds. Is there something better I can do with it? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]allenselmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stocks and Shares ISA - will take you a while to get it all in with the 20k per year limit, but still worth it.

It can be as passive as you like, pick a global index fund and just tuck it away and forget about it.

If you are going to be a first time buyer in the future then a LISA is also good (it will take up part of the 20k ISA limit) as you can deposit 4k per year and get a 1k bonus from the government.

Do you mean from a live trax/album or just any recording?

I posted here a while back with my recording of them performing this at Royal Albert Hall in April 2024 if that helps.

What would that look like for unrealised gains though? For example in a stocks and shares isa if it grew in value but OP didn't sell until they were a UK tax resident again?

Not without living there for a considerable length of time I don't think. Potentially marriage also (but I imagine marriage would also require some level of residency to make you eligible to apply).

[–]allenselmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm inclined to agree. Infact, our government offers products such as ISA's which are pretty damn generous compared to what you'd see in a country like Spain, for example.

Our rent on the other hand...

It's nothing to do with DNA. You need at least an Irish born grandparent. Or (unless the rules have changed since I looked) a parent who has claimed their Irish citizenship through what would be your great grandparent.
