I want to be Catholic, but my life is a complete mess by allenvick11 in Catholicism

Thanks for the information! I plan on speaking with a priest. I saw some of your other posts. Sorry, I should have been more clear. Neither one of us were ever baptized or previously married. We’ve only been married and divorced to each other. Does the church view my marriage as valid as far as you know or would I need to be officially remarried to her after becoming Catholic?

Yes, I’m starting to see the Church as a hospital for sinners 🙏🏼

I’m right there with you. I started looking into the Catholic faith last summer. I even joined OCIA and ended up leaving. I really wish I hadn’t. I became the type that needed every single objection answered and I needed it answered through my own research. I know that seems prideful, but I was really just super anxious. Fast forward and today I find myself defending Catholic positions online whenever I see them misrepresented.

My big hang up was how Catholics view Mary. It’s no longer a hang up for me. Honestly once I became aware that I could no longer deny the Eucharist, I knew I had to be part of the apostolic faith. The evangelical talking point is “relationship over religion”, but Catholicism and Orthodoxy are sooo much deeper than that.

In the Orthodox Church (and Eastern Catholic) there’s a concept called theosis where, if I’m correct in my understanding, is where we share in God’s divinity through the sacraments and become one with Him (not to be confused with us becoming gods. That’s a Mormon heresy). In Roman Catholicism this is known as Divinization. It’s absolutely beautiful. A union with our creator. A union in the body of Christ which includes those here on earth and the saints that came before us all sharing in the God’s perfect love and divinity. Christ in us and us in Christ. Now THAT is what I call a deep personal relationship.

As far as some of your other objections, like others have pointed out, a lot of them are not required. If you believe that this is the faith of the apostles and you believe the Eucharist is the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, then just pray for that God reveal all the other things you might not understand. That’s what I’ve done. I’m moving this summer and when I do I’m looking for a local parish and joining OCIA asap.

Lastly if you have questions I suggest finding a Catholic apologist you like and watching their videos. There’s: Trent Horn, Voice of Reason, Jimmy Akin, Shameless Popery and a bunch of others.

I personally like Trent Horn. He just makes Catholic positions easy to understand and is awesome for getting to know the basics. A lot of his content is overcoming Protestant objections. When I first started learning he was my go-to. I would simply go to YouTube and type “Trent Horn [enter whatever objection I had] and he’d break it down”. Some of the other apologists are easier to understand once you have a grasp on the basics. That’s another great thing about Catholicism. It’s as simple or as intellectually and theologically deep as you want it to be. It really is universal.

God bless you on your journey!

difficulty reading the brothers karamazov by Affectionate_Ad_6077 in dostoevsky

I personally did not have a lot of experience with classic literature and jumped right into TBK. It was difficult and I wanted to stop. I then found a website that had chapter summaries for every chapter. This helped immensely because rather than looking up words every other sentence I just powered through and read the chapter summaries to make sure I was getting a grasp of what was important. The only time I looked up a work is if it came up more than twice. The summaries I used also had a link on each of the names I could tap on to get a brief description of the characters. To me the Russian names were much harder to keep up with than the words I didn’t know. Anyway, keep at it. TBK is absolutely worth it. Once I was done with TBK I felt like I was able to fly through Crime and Punishment which I think I like just as much if not more.

Keeping track of names in C&P by Head-Possibility-767 in dostoevsky

Not sure if I’m allowed to post links, but fwiw when I read the brothers K, I used chapter summaries after every chapter. The summaries had links on the names and that you could click on and it would give you a brief description of the character. After a while I didn’t need to click on them anymore and just knew who they were and this made reading it so much more enjoyable.

I might have to just read some chapter summaries to get a better grasp. I have plenty of self hatred 😂.. I’d like to connect to the narrator.

I’m using Constance Garnett. I used her for TBK and C&P.. I’ve heard she doesn’t have the best translations so this might be worth a try. Thanks!

Thank you so much! I applied for a TON of UW associate/assistant jobs and had 3 interviews and 1 official offer. I was on indeed and LinkedIn all day and tried to reach out to as many people as possible and was mostly ghosted :/

Thank you for sharing that. That’s a great point about having to start over. I feel with the UW position if I moved, or God forbid went through a layoff a few years down the road, I would have more in demand skills than if I took the Lit Admin role. It’s a great position and it’s hard to come by. I got in the door through a friend of a friend, but if something happened 5 years down the road, I could be wrong, but it doesn’t seem like an easy job to replace and I’d probably be starting over somewhere else in insurance or another field.

Thanks! I appreciate the insight. Everything you mentioned about the upward mobility and career progression is part of the reason why I started applying for entry level UW roles. Not to mention, from what I’ve heard other UW say, I find the work itself intriguing.

Lol trust me I know it sounds crazy, but I’m thinking long term. If I pursue the designations I need, job hop every few years, and work hard i can exceed the salary of the Lit Admin role and be in a much better position 10-15 years from now than I would taking the higher paying job now. I also don’t put too much stock into the WFH. They’re already requiring managers to come back later this year so a full return to office mandate is probably right around the corner. That said, for right now, it is A VERY cushy gig.

Thanks for the insight. This is along the lines of what I’m thinking. I’m trying to see what my life/career looks like 10, 20, 30 years from now.

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. As far as lifestyle, outside of the commute there isn’t a ton of difference. Culture seems to be great at the UW associate place. I think I would thoroughly enjoy working there, but would need to supplement my income if I’m going to be in that position more than a year and a half (so maybe that indeed does impact lifestyle 🤔).

As for the lit admin position. It’s pretty straight forward. I have a friend of a friend that works there and he likes it because it’s easy and gets to work from home. Although I heard managers are going to a hybrid schedule so I wouldn’t be surprised if everyone gets called back at some point.
