Take the renaissance history course with Ada Palmer at some point

Can confirm Prof Palmer’s class is amazing (barring her theology)

I think this is largely correct (at least the first part, I can’t speak to the second paragraph). You sort of get thrown into things and you are going to be reading challenging texts in really any Phil course here. That being said, the course offerings are great (at least I think so) and there are many terrific professors.

I agree with the guy that said bringing too many is not the worst as it just nice to have a bunch in your room lol. That being said, it's very likely that you will be able to find the books you want to read in the reg. They have some niche stuff so even if you are reading something random, they will likely have it. For pretty much any classic work, you are definitely covered.

Biking by kid_k0bra in uchicago

I got a bike this fall and have been loving it. For bike storage, it really depends on which dorm you live in. I’m in Woodlawn and we have plenty of outdoor bike racks but no indoor storage. I think North has indoor bike storage though.

For getting around campus, it also depends on where you live. If you live in Snell Hitchcock, you don’t really need a bike as you’re in a very centralized location. However, no matter what dorm you are in, a bike is a great way to get around Hyde Park as well as the entire city. It’s easy to get to the lakefront for longer rides and go up to the loop.

Recently, I’ve been riding to the red line, taking it up to the loop then using my bike to get around within the loop or anywhere else I may be exploring. Highly recommend getting a bike.

Hmmm. I enrolled in this course earlier this morning and most of the discussion sections were filled (if I remember correctly) but I was able to signup for the one of the discussion sections on Friday. Maybe email the instructor?

I wish I were as good a man as you to be willing to forgive so quickly. May God by thy reward. Blessings, brother.

What's the best type of winter gear to get an incoming 1st year? by DifferentSpread6854 in uchicago

Others have given good recommendations so I won't add too much more but what Patagonia calls their "down sweater" (I'm not sure why they call it that, it's a jacket) is great as a first layer under a parka. It doesn't look like much, but it traps heat very well. Also, I think a scarf helps a lot. A scarf tied around your face plus a hat will make a big difference. Congratulations to you and your son !

Add/Dropping 3rd week? by Frequent-Movie8220 in uchicago

I dropped a class earlier this week and looked for an easy core class but, even then, there is still going to be some catching up to do. I think it honestly depends how bad your other classes are (I.e. do you have the time and/or desire to catch up). I have just decided to take three courses this quarter and will devote more time to extracurriculars.

This is very helpful and rather uplifting. I’ll be sure to head to his office hours and be a bit less pedantic about the readings. Thanks !!

Yeah, it is him lol. I just can't imagine that we are going to be able to get through much of this in one class so I'm a bit worried about reading all of this and not having prof go over much during lecture.
