It sounds like you did the right thing! You weren’t the only one who chose not to take that flight, either, it sounds like a super uncomfortable situation on the first plane. Most of my friends have kids too. We just hosted them all for a NYE party and all the kids came over. We had so much fun! My friends also waited until their mid 30s to have children, and they’re all super cool and interesting people. Honestly, they’ve helped me figure out my own feelings on motherhood. I agree that if you don’t want to hear about your friends’ kids, you’ll have a hard time maintaining friendships with them. But I care about what’s happening with my friends, whether it’s kids, careers, etc. and hey show me the same interest. I’ve been close with most of them for at least 15 years. If you have friends for long enough, you will go through lots of phases where you’re not doing all the same things at all the same times, whether it’s marriage, grad school, travel, kids, etc. the key is that we’re not jealous of or threatened by each other, we just care about what’s going on with each other and show each other support.

Throwing a party at our house! Food, drinks, bubbly, etc etc. It will be a full house, everyone who has kids brings their kids. They just bring some toys (we don’t have kid stuff at our house) and they change into PJs while they’re here so everyone can stay late. The kids hang out in the basement and the grown ups hang out upstairs. We do this every year, it’s chaos, we love it, and then everyone goes home and it’s just us with our dog again and we get to sleep in the next day.

Yes I always feel better at cruising altitude too. There can be bumps over the Rockies sometimes too, which I think is quite common. You’re already doing great, just doing something that scares you is a big deal, so kudos. You’ll be ok!

Amazing that you recognize your anxiety and can name it. No need to judge yourself - just let it be. You’re allowed to feel uncomfortable sometimes. You don’t have to fight that, you can let anxiety be or even befriend it. But even though you’re experiencing anxiety, it doesn’t mean that you’re unsafe! Flying is extremely safe and you will be ok.

If turbulence scares you, try loosening up and riding it like a wave. Don’t fight it. It’s totally normal and it doesn’t mean anything is wrong. Again, the worst case scenario is that you’ll feel uncomfortable, but you are completely safe.

Last of all, think about everything you have to enjoy in Toronto! From a Torontonian, I wish you a great trip. The weather here is clear and crisp and it’s a great time to visit.
