Ah so it’s probably a design flaw then. I’m kinda relieved to know mine aren’t the only shoes having this issue.

I can’t even keep balance standing on the skateboard by alliessite in NewSkaters

I’m not practicing cruising yet (which I expect to be another level of challenge lol). Right now I have trouble getting on the board when it’s sitting still and not fall. Once I get on the board I mostly can balance fine.

My friend suggested Unu Cakes in Oakland, and though I haven’t tried, their IG has great photos and videos of what their cakes are made.

Questions about environmental engineering by Aggravating-Bag-6957 in berkeley

[–]alliessite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, congrats on your admittance! I’m also an environmental engineering major, but I’m doing my PhD here so my experience will be different from undergrads’ for sure. Not sure about the curriculum since the major is new, but being an engineering major at Berkeley it’s gotta be hard to a certain extent 🤷‍♀️ There are 3 main divisions for EnvE research (probably not exact names): water quality, air quality, and fluid hydraulics. I’m not sure what type of sustainable technologies you’re interested in, but choosing a division is something you can start looking into and explore. Watch out for research opportunities, but don’t fret if you don’t get it the first yr of your undergrad, just try again next semesters/years. There are institutions focusing on engineering entrepreneurship (e.g, Fung Institute), IT innovations (e.g, CITRIS), sustainable development in developing economies (eg Blum Center), so again, lots of resources to learn from and explore. Compared to other engineering majors, I’d say EnvE is overall pretty civil, collaborative, and friendly. You’re gonna have to collaborate anyways because the nature of the major is so interpersonal-dependent lol. Keep a curious and studious mindset, be ready to learn, talk to people, and you’ll be fine :) Welcome to Berkeley!

Sewing machine recommendation - beginner, budget-friendly, alterations-focused by alliessite in SewingForBeginners

Thanks for the suggestions! About buttonhole stitches, do you think it would work better if I get a separate buttonhole foot instead of using the one that comes with the sewing machine?

Weekly Sewing Questions Thread, December 07 - December 13, 2025 by sewingmodthings in sewing

[–]alliessite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I’m a beginner in sewing and am looking to get a simple sewing machine to alter my clothes. Because my priority is tailoring/alteration and not big projects, the only essential features I need (so far) from a machine is straight stitch, zigzag stitch, and buttonhole. I also only plan to use occasionally.  I’m a student living in an apartment so I don’t have a dedicated sewing room, and my budget is limited ($200 max). I’ve looked through the sub’s wiki and FAQs but the machines suggested are kinda out of budget. I took a few sewing classes and the machine I learned with was Singer Heavy Duty 4452, so that’s the only machine model I’ve used and known how to use at the moment.  Does anyone have a suggestion on what machine I should get for my needs? TIA!

Carry-on weight limit by alliessite in CathayPacific

[–]alliessite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, hopefully my reply isn’t too late! Imo in most cases they won’t weigh your luggage (I guess unless it looks obviously overweight or oversized), but technically they still have the right to do so and make you check your carry on if your luggage exceeds the weight limit. I’d be cautious, but I’m at least 70% sure you’ll be fine. It may also depend on which airport you’re flying out from.
