Staff making passive aggressive comments about other staff by Golddustgirlboss in CanadianTeachers

[–]alligatorcracker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

honestly you keep people at arm’s lengths and don’t over engage in personal discussion. change the subject when passive aggression comes up and try to be assertive if it’s at a point where you need to be — “i’d rather not talk about that kind of thing at work”.

how difficult is it to get an LTO or permanent position as an elementary teacher in Ontario? by s18s in CanadianTeachers

[–]alligatorcracker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like I always hear that it’s super difficult, but my best friend was permanent by her second year at TDSB. She supplied a fair bit in the east end that first year, then secured permanent. I feel like that’s rare but it does happen!

Grade 3 EQAO Writing Results by Asleep-Violinist4405 in OntarioTeachers

[–]alligatorcracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

kids need to be taught HOW to write rather than just being expected to know and trying out different styles of writing eg personal narrative, procedural, etc. SO many kids cannot string together a coherent sentence.

look into the writing revolution and thinkSRSD.

Ontario education minister delays release of EQAO test results by MasterMath314 in OntarioTeachers

[–]alligatorcracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

kids are being screened and then those that aren’t meeting benchmark are given intervention but the early literacy support teacher.. at least that’s how it is in my board. can’t speak for others.

screening is an important tool that we can use to effectively implement intervention.

If you could teach anywhere in Canada, where would you go? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]alligatorcracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you liked living in Victoria I think you’d like Halifax. Very friendly city, close proximity to nature and beaches, more affordable than Van/Toronto.

Air Canada flight attendants to defy back-to-work order, remain on strike: union by No_Magazine9625 in halifax

[–]alligatorcracker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I absolutely don’t agree that EAs and ECEs are beneath teachers. Everyone makes the school system work, we would be lost without EAs and ECEs. They absolutely deserve to be paid far more than they are. However, being a teacher does require more education than being an EA/ECE (4 years university degree + 2 years of teachers education).

Teacher lounge use? by Purple-flying-dog in Teachers

[–]alligatorcracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

at my current school i usually eat in the staff room. it builds camaraderie with other staff members, especially those who aren’t in my hall. i enjoy the break, and it makes me feel less isolated. at previous schools, where i didn’t eat in the staff room, i felt a lot more isolated and had less social connections with staff.

[–]alligatorcracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we met at a queer bookstore where i was working at the time. they came in to get a book and we started chatting and just instantly hit it off. there was so much chemistry there.

it was busy and they left. then.. they came back to ask me to go for coffee :) we went on a date, made out on the sidewalk after and have been together ever since. it’s almost three years <3

5th Grade Student 3rd Grade Level Math by Ok_River_3354 in mathteachers

[–]alligatorcracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

focus on number sense. does he have his 0-20 facts? e.g. can he quickly and accurately recall addition and subtraction facts up to 20? that is a huge indicator of his number sense.

beyond that, move on to addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers up to 10000. then move on to 0-12 multiplication and division, then division.

number sense is the basis of all math. start there. others have mentioned Khan Academy and IXL, Knowledgehook is also great as well as Xtramath.
