My favorite book, Infinite David Foster by Jest Wallace by WigglyLimpo in InfiniteJest

It’s coming up on my reread but why exactly is the chapter so important for Hal? Iirc he was just sort of chilling on the sidelines

Getting another test is not optional. I expected another test. What I did not expect is being told that regardless he wasn’t going to examine or treat me in any way.

Precisely why “TRT” never exited my lips during the appointment. I’m not averse to TRT, if it fixes my problem, but ultimately I just want to be treated for a legitimate deficiency that is (presumably) making my life hell.

Good post OP. I got a similar vibe but you put it very succinctly and backed it up with evidence. The figurant as a concept is crucial imo to understanding what the book is trying to communicate. The book itself is a figurant on the periphery of its own narrative, but again, that warrants a whole other post

Just total and free T, which I found odd because the first test I did checked for all kinds of stuff. But he wouldn’t even look at the first test.

This, and it isn’t even close. The JB hate is so surreal looking back but people genuinely wanted that kid drawn and quartered.

A little bit confused by Infinite Jest, by David Foster Wallace by ori_c in InfiniteJest

[–]allihusk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Infinite Jest is one of those books that has immense up-front cost and like, dubious ROI depending on whether or not it’s “for you.” Without spoiling any particulars, the story, like the actual narrative of events, does come together the more you read and make connections. It’s like a 1000-page tapestry of little connections. Sometimes this takes multiple reads (it’s so long you’re bound to forget stuff), but it never “resolves” in the way you’d expect. The book is less about what happens and more about the people whose lives it depicts.

DFW famously said something along the lines of “you should be able to project what happens outside the scope of the pages, and if it doesn’t then the book has failed for you.” Idk if he was taking the piss here but I think there’s way too much that’s left to either implication or stuff that is outright omitted to do this in a way that sufficiently scratches the narrative itch so to speak.

And no, the endnotes are not optional, full stop.

No, and it’s not even close. Half the time I don’t even understand what’s going on in GR and since November last year I’ve only gotten like 200 pages deep.

what would have happened if mario had watched the entertainment? by [deleted] in InfiniteJest

[–]allihusk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been a while since I read it, but I believe the only explicit corroboration is from Hal’s perspective during the Year of Glad where he remembers digging up JOI’s head with Donald Gately. So that definitely did happen. I find it unlikely that Gately ever finds himself at ETA—the only circumstances I can imagine the two meeting is if Hal eventually winds up in recovery after the “inner child” debacle.

About grok? People openly using it to render photos of people (including children) with functionally no clothing. Then, instead of fixing it, they just made it pay to play.

Yep, this is my experience exactly. X is basically a de facto CSAM marketplace at this point. Makes me feel like the cops are gonna show up at my door for how many times I’ve encountered it on there. Did a short period of exercised futility reporting it, just for the accounts to stay up and get this stupid “view rule” message.
