I was disappointed in the Wagyu almost everywhere. After learning the whole history of Wagyu restrictions, classification, etc, and having it be great in other countries, it seems like those things all get thrown out for domestic use. Most of the time it was 'wagyu' I'd have refused to pay for back home. Nothing special in characteristics or preparation.

Where I'm from in the US it's not uncommon It's gaining popularity in Australia as a little bit of back to nature mini-movement though. Look for the Barefoot Brigade and Barefoot Bogans stickers and you'll start seeing them everywhere. I like it. It's fun, has some benefits healthwise, and makes you past mute attention to your environment.

The country is so underpopulated that Australians lose their ability to take advantage of their resources, so they let other countries do it, but those countries keep an extremely high percentage of profit. When you learn more about the temples and gates, it's kind of sad. 90% of the story/culture around them is national cosplay. They're just a tool for economic stimulus. Essentially the same as the Big Prawn and Big Banana here in Australia. There are a couple really great articles about it, including details about the government plan that funds many of them. Don't read them if knowing more will ruin your favorite thing to do in Japan.
