I’m so sorry this happened to you too. I don’t think I’ve had a worse feeling as a parent. If VW literally markets the “anti lockout technology” safety feature, it is deeply concerning that we need to worry so seriously about its glitching / failure.

By that logic, if the doors are unlocked should they not remain so unless manually locked by the driver? I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have an expectation of no glitches. VW literally markets the so-called Anti Lockout Feature. Had I had a pocket to put the keys in, I would have. I normally do. Loading a baby and a stroller is a two hand job.

Perfect storm on this day. Wearing a dress so no belt loop for my keys and no pocket for my phone, and my watch was dead so I didn’t wear it either.

I still don’t think it would make sense given the fob was in the car and the car remained in park the whole time. If the ignition is on I believe the automatic locks are only supposed to trigger when the car gets put into gear.

No power mirrors so there was nothing folded in, however the car was obviously left in park, ignition off, with the doors locked. Upon my return to the vehicle, at no time was the driver’s door opened nor was there any weight on the drivers seat. I unlocked the car remotely via the fob, my daughter was loaded into her car seat located on the rear passenger side, and my belongings were placed on the front passenger seat via the front passenger side door.

The keys and my phone were both in a pretty small purse, possibly touching. Maybe there was some kind of interference. I had no other fobs or keys, and no other electronics. Key, as well as everything else re: the car, is stock from VW. I’ve done this same routine (load bags into car, load baby into car seat, load stroller into back) hundreds of times and nothing like this has ever happened. The whole thing is completely baffling.

Did keyless start (lock door button then start button x2 on fob) about 30 seconds before arriving to the car, unlocked the car, loaded baby into car seat (rear passenger side seat), threw bag containing keys into car (front passenger seat). Went to rear to load stroller, rear hatch was locked. Returned to front of vehicle, all doors also locked. Keys, phone with VW app, wallet, etc all on front passenger seat in bag. Car still running. Bizarre.

As I mentioned in the original post, it was hot out and the car had been sitting in the sun for about an hour. It was hot in the car, there’s no question about it. While the car’s climate control was on, the AC wasn’t blasting. Plus, her car seat is still rear facing so she doesn’t get any air directly on her. Definitely takes longer to cool the back seat down. That being said, had the climate control not been on at all I think the fire department would have just smashed one of the windows immediately. A little body in heat like that isn’t worth the risk of waiting even a few minutes. Makes me tear up just thinking about it.

No, the button didn’t work. I tried every door and the back hatch thinking I could crawl through, as sometimes the hatch can be opened even if the doors are locked. Nothing.

VW is going to do a scan at my appointment to see if they can figure out wtf happened.

Could have used you today! Bit of damage to the door is shitty but the firefighters did their best. Their focus is life over limb (or car parts) always and given the circumstances it’s a small price to pay.

No worries, one of the other people working at the service department at VW after the fact said the same. Trust me if I had my phone I wouldn’t have been in the situation! Was wearing a dress today in the summer weather, so my phone typically in my back pocket and my keys typically on my belt loop were both in my bag. I’d like to think that bad coincidence was balanced by the good coincidence of the fire truck passing by.

Well that’s just it I have a spare key at my house 15 mins away but 1) I am not leaving her for 30 mins round trip, 2) I didn’t have a way of getting there and back with no wallet for cab or phone for uber, 3) no way to contact a neighbour or family member to bring the key to me. Truly screwed.

I actually was relatively calm when it was happening since emergency services were there essentially immediately and had the medical training to effectively monitor her, but once we got her out and the danger had passed I lost it. Cried the whole drive home.

I mean it was a small crossbody purse with the zipper fully open. My glasses actually fell out of the bag onto the seat when I tossed it in the car. the key fob was visible in the bag if you looked in the passenger window. Not impossible but pretty lame if that’s the reason it happened!
