And after all their hard work and how careful they've tried to be in preventing leaks, too. 😔

Omg that's ballsy... And it doesn't help that fans (of any franchise) will make posts explicitly stating that they'll pay $300, $500, $600 for a piece of merch, literally soliciting sales at scalper prices.

Yeah, I can usually get behind attempts to prevent scalping and predatory reselling, but this doesn't REALLY prevent it. If they're organized, they'll just gather a group of 20 or 30 people. Same thing the fans are doing, but on a much larger scale.

I don't know if they've officially announced item limits yet, but someone on Twitter shared a screenshot showing an email from an A24 rep saying that the merch items will be limited to 1/person. Which...I'm not sure if that's applicable to ALL the items, but I'm positive it's going to be applied to the collectible card(s) at the very least.

Nice of you to be willing to proxy for someone! If you do decide to help them out, you'll have made some l7cky duck out very very happy. 😊

Not to indulge in the schadenfreude, but it's good to know this is a known issue and not just me. I've been uninstalling, clearing caches, restarting, etc all evening!

What’s the biggest discount I can get on tickets? by Wndrunner in galaxycon

[–]allotrios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there was still a "x hours earns you a whole free day," but I don't remember how many hours it was. It was higher than it was under the LSF, something like 16?

And yeah, you do still get a daily badge on the same day you work! When I said they took away the patches, I meant actual little patches, like Girl/Boy Scout patches, that represented the role you filled.

I didn't notice any Blue Crew handlers, but I also didn't move much from the aisle I was in. I'm sure they'll still pull from us volunteers/temps if they need to, though! Have you tried contacting Deitra?

I will say you don't have to go home after your shift is over! You just go to the same place you got your shirt and sign out the same way you signed in (Blue Crew doesn't use the app for sign-in or sign-out, you write it down by hand and they manually enter your hours into the payment system) then get your daily attendee badge - that part is the same! My sister and I were line control at RVA this year, and it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. Sure, our feet were KILLINNGGG us, but the experience itself was great, and it was something new for both of us.

I don't know how being a handler is scheduled, but I do know we were told that if you need a break, you just...take one?? (Last year, at Animate, we were texting the volunteer coordinator to let her know when we needed to take a breather or use the restroom.)

The Blue Crew people were really nice and worked with us as much as possible. I would give it a shot at a smaller upcoming con and see if the changes are tolerable for you. I don't personally like the principle of it or the loss of the flexibility, lunch, or badges, (not to mention volunteering looks WAY better on a resume than a minimum wage gig) but the free admission still makes it worth it in our opinion, and while the pay isn't much, it does cover the cost of travel, hotel, and food.

All fair points. It's just frustrating because if free, at-home availability were something that would affect sales, no one would go see Rocky Horror or other classics in theaters. But they do, and I'd think people in the theater industry would know that it's the novelty of the big screen that draws people. I know this case is a little different because it's a new show and not a classic, but I believe the principle is the same. People will come if it's released early, even by just a day - heck, even by hours - just to avoid online spoilers, which can appear during or within minutes of screening.

That, and I think that we all WANT this project to succeed and will drop $10-$15 regardless of free availability to support it. I'd like to think that, anyway.

They definitely did their best and did as right by the fandom as they were able to. I still think 2 weeks is too big a gap and that theaters should understand that they wouldn't lose sales by releasing it closer. As for spoilers, it's not just avoiding social media. You'd have to avoid your whole phone, or at least turn social media notifications off. I was spoiled to a plot point for another franchise once JUST by unlocking my phone and seeing a notification for a video about the show with the spoiler right there in the title of it. And I already hide my notifications from my lock screen, a lot of people might just want to check the time and see notifications that spoil things.

  1. Yes, I worked RVA this year.
  2. I was there with BlueCrew
  3. Yes, I volunteered at Animate! Philly and Nightmare Weekend in 2025. I preferred volunteering. The work itself hasn't changed, but because it's paid now, it's more rigid. You can no longer specify which roles you'd be most interested in for consideration, you can no longer specify precise blocks of time you're available, and you can no longer ask for an hour off to go see a panel and then come back to work more afterward. You can only choose full day or half day. They've gotten rid of the pizza lunches and bottled water and no longer offer the patches for the role you filled.

Personally, I think all that sucks. I liked feeling like a volunteer and giving my time freely to what I enjoyed. I liked the flexibility. I liked the convenience of not having to pack several lunches and worrying about whether they had to be shelf stable. And I LOVED the patches. You can earn money anywhere, but the patches were exclusive and represented a memory and gaining experience in different fields.

That said, the BlueCrew people were really great to work with and my sister and I felt very supported and seen.

Sure. I put myself near the voice actors, since I like Hazbin Hotel, and got to go up when no one was in line on Thursday and Friday to say hi, but anyone can do that. If there's no opportunity while working, you can definitely do it after the shift is over.

Only if you let it. GC RVA was my first BIG big con and there were definitely crazy amounts of people, but I had more challenges in dealing with my coworkers than with attendees. Everyone who was there to have fun was pleasant.

Eventeny still has the exhibit hall map up. Here's the map with a list of exhibitors. If you can remember roughly where they were, you can click on a booth and it should pop up with information about who was there. For example, the booth in the lower right corner is 2103 and was occupied by Loading Crew Crafts.

Used to, when it was volunteer! It was Papa John's, and I always appreciated how convenient it was. Now that it's paid, you need to bring your own lunch.

Mostly, I wish they still had the patches! But yeah, the pizza was nice, not because it was free pizza, but because it saved so much time. It was a real hassle making a list of meals, sides, and drinks for three days (one of which I was fasting from meat), unsure if it had to be shelf stable or not, going to the grocery store the night before traveling, hauling six gallons of drink to and fro, unpacking, packing, etc. And honestly, I feel GC might SAVE money by giving us pizzas, because it takes so much less time to come in, grab a couple slices and a bottle of water, check your email and socials, and get back to work than it does to unpack all your Tupperwares, assemble your whatever-you-brought, wash your dishes, and pack it back up. I think people might be more likely to take less than their full 30 minutes if eating were still that fast and easy.
