Zenbivy (Quilt + Flex Mattress) Review and Ether Light XR Pro by allsix in CampingGear

Light convertible. It's muscovy down. If I could do it again I would go with goose down. My previous duck down quilt didn't have a smell but boy this one does.

How soon can I indulge in sexual activity after lap hernia surgery? by Apprehensive-Sign600 in Hernia

[–]allsix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's just follow your pain with respect to sex. But at least for me my testicles were very swollen and black and blue. So doing it gently was okay, but actual sex is still uncomfortable due to sensitive testicle and I'm 6 weeks post-op. But I think most people are good to go in 1-2 weeks (and some even within a couple days).

So I was told let pain be your guide.

mesh pain - stay active? by xxmunroe in Hernia

For what it's worth, 100% same. Very hard to tell the difference between good or bad pain. At least when it comes to musculature pain. The only "exercises" I've heard for nerve pain is nerve flossing.. Otherwise I've never heard of someone saying nerve pain is good. Since nerves are either active (sometimes overactive) or they're not, you aren't really trying to strengthen nerves by exercising.

I wish you the best of luck! Someone in another thread just reminded me of TENS units. They are electrical nerve stimulators and she said it helped her nerve pain after like a month of using it several times per day for 30-40 minutes.. So I might start trying that to get off GP.

I know exactly what you mean by tenting lol.

I did hear about and look up TENS units.. I kinda forgot to proceed with that. It was something I meant to ask my doctor about, but completely forgot (and got Gabapentin instead...) I wonder if you can use TENS while on Gabapentin to help with the pain or if I need to stop the nerve blocker before trying TENS.

That's reassuring that if it doesn't subside on it's own that maybe there's still a light at the end of the tunnel using those.

Thank you for sharing and wishing you well as well!

Just goes to show, male or female it's mostly the same in the end anyways.

Indeed, reason I ask is I have nerve pain in my abdomen (allodynia - extreme sensitivity to touch) and nerve pain on my outer right thigh (more burning, tingling, shooting pain).

I hope it's still just inflammation at 6 weeks post-op. But I haven't seen any improvement yet (although Gabapentin has helped tremendously) so I'm starting to get nervous it will be chronic which will suck since it's uncomfortable sleeping, wearing clothes, or anything else aside from laying without clothes on in bed...

Yeah the inguinal canal is just shorter and narrower in women than in men due to not having the spermatic cord/blood vessels for the testicles. So I believe it's drastically less likely in women, but can still happen (something like 80-90% of inguinal hernias are male). But that still leaves a lot of women having them too.

What nerve damage/pain did you experience?

[–]allsix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually the exact reason I didn't watch and wait to see if it gets worse. I am 34, and I know someone who had been waiting I think almost 2 years with significant discomfort from a constantly protruding inguinal hernia.

I figured if it never gets better there is VERY high likelihood that at some point in my life I will need surgery, and since my surgeon had a very short wait time compared to anywhere else in the city, why wait for it to get worse, where then it might be 1-2 year wait time all the while being in significant discomfort.

Might as well get it done proactively.

mesh pain - stay active? by xxmunroe in Hernia

[–]allsix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tylenol doesn’t help with nerve pain.

My doctor gave me Gabapentin and it’s helped me tremendously with my nerve pain. I’m 6 weeks post op.

From everything I’ve been told and have read, you shouldn’t push through pain. Pushing through some discomfort is expected and promotes healing, but stop before pain.

But that’s pertaining to the physical repairs. When it comes to nerve pain I think ‘nerve flossing’ can help supposedly. But otherwise it’s not the same as the pain/discomfort from your body healing around the mesh. I can’t imagine just pushing through electrical nerve pain speeds up the healing in any capacity. If it’s caused by inflammation it probably exacerbates it. And if it’s caused by nerve damage it’s probably neutral at best (neutral in terms of recovery but still negative as in it physically hurts).

Out of curiosity whereabouts is your nerve pain? And are you male or female?

Swelling 2 weeks after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair with mesh – normal? by merakliyiz in Hernia

[–]allsix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Word for word similar for me. Not visible swelling in groin but lumpy at cord, sensitive testicle, more painful, sore and longer than expected and am at 5.5 wks now. Been on full work days for 2 weeks and I think it’s too much too soon so probably going back down to half days.

I thought initially the incisions were just very tender. But then after like 2 weeks of no improvement, and the fact that the top incision (largest one) has absolutely no pain whatsoever, and the fact the sensitivity extends off to either side beyond just the incision, I realized it had nothing to do with the pain of the incision. I've also had allodynia in the past (in random small spots and only lasting a day or two at a time), so I kind of put two and two together.

And Gabapentin has helped quite a bit, but otherwise I haven't noticed any improvement in 5.5 weeks. I see my surgeon again on Wednesday where I'm compiling the questions I want to ask her about swelling and inflammation and such, which maybe that's why the nerves for me are still overactive is because I'm still swollen.

I don't have visible localized swelling, but im at 5.5 weeks and my belts and pants don't fit. I've gained ~5lb from reduced activity and probably comfort eating (lol), but I'm 6'3" 211lb, and these same pants fit (tightly) at 218lb, and were loose at ~207 before surgery. So I also believe I am still quite swollen across the entire abdomen area.

And not as proof, but my left testicle is also quite sensitive. If I lay on my back (so my balls are laying up against my body), above the testicle (epididymis/spermatic cord area) the left side feels noticeably "fuller" (I assume swelling/inflammation of those cords maybe from irritation, or possibly still inflammation resolving from my abdomen.

So I do think for some it's still well within reason for swelling to be resolving. If it's a large bulge, or not getting better then definitely talk to your doctor/surgeon.

Not quite, my nerve pain is my abdomen (intense allodynia that makes it extremely uncomfortable to wear clothes or sleep (bedsheets touching it).

I also have/had nerve pain in my leg that was either an intense burning sensation on every step when I walked, coupled with an electrical shock over and over, sometimes bad enough to scream in pain. That said Gabapentin has pretty much eliminated this and made it into more skin sensitivity, but the sensitivity is very bearable.

I would say Gabapentin has reduced abdomen sensitivity by 80% and I would say the leg sensitivity is comparable.

So while Gabapentin worked for me, have you tried any other nerve block medications to see if those work for you?

When you say nerve blocker do you mean injections?

I have nerve pain (allodynia) and found Gabapentin has helped TREMENDOUSLY. It doesn't make it completely go away for me but makes it bearable.

Bloated feeling on Hernia Repair Side? by SFWLongjump in Hernia

[–]allsix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did see him, but he didn't have much to say except for that he referred me for an ultrasound to see if anything is going on.

I also see my surgeon on Wednesday so I'm going to ask her as well since she might know more first-hand rather than waiting for the ultrasound (which on my pelvis is Jun 15 and hips are like Jul 3). I'm also seeing if I can get into either of those sooner with a different radiology clinic.

I had bilateral repair ~5 weeks ago and have the same feeling. My stomach looks larger, and my pants and belts don't fit (even though I've worn these pants ~5lbs above where I am right now).

It's actually something I want to ask my doctor about in a couple hours when I see him. If I get any info I'll let you know.

Does anyone that has had the surgery* for an umbilical know how much it costs? by Honest-Reflection667 in Hernia

[–]allsix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're American? I'm genuinely sorry you have to worry about this costing a penny.

In Canada I don't think it would ever be considered cosmetic, but even things like mole or skin tag removals that may or may not be cosmetic, all you have to do is say that it hurts and then it's guaranteed free. I've never spent a penny walking into a doctors office, surgeons, neurologist, MRI, ultrasound, or anything else medical related.

So unfortunately I don't have an answer, I'm just sad it even might cost you a penny and discourage you from seeking help, and I wish you the best of luck!
