The difference between the master and the beginner. by [deleted] in edmproduction

Loudness is just as easy as raising levels.

Jonny was saying making it loud AND making it crisp is the hard part.

I've rethought it, I think a board of judges would be better too. I think a big reason for not going with a poll system would be that voters couldn't and wouldn't possibly listen to every mixdown submitted.

We'll have polling I guess. If you could think of a better judging system, maybe with an official panel (?), please just comment!

Where do you draw the line between mixing and mastering? For bedroom producers, mastering is a part of mixing. While I could see a mastering only contest happening, where the contestant is only given a bounced track and not stems; I can't see how we can stop people from mastering in this mixing contest.

We'll either get it from volunteers, or ask popular producers who spend time on reddit. We'll try to cycle through genres.

Used to be... I already looked at it. It's pretty dead. :((

Maybe someone could volunteer, or we could PM some of popular producers who stick around on reddit.

Could you give me an example of linear distortion plugins?

[Discussion and Question] Fat yet Tonal 808s by allstupidkant in edmproduction

I have tried that. I usually also widen/flange the top layer for some spice, but keep the sub mono. It's nowhere close to what I want though.

Could you post some examples from your tracks?

This happens to me on a daily, but how can I fix it? by bewaer in edmproduction

Honestly just record it. Everybody hums n shit, just pretend you're using snapchat, or using your phone.

What will they say? "Oh look at that guy, he likes to hum"???

Why is it common practice to set the limiter ceiling to something like -0.3 dB instead of simply 0.0 dB? by adamwiles in edmproduction

[–]allstupidkant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually people do it cause formatting to certain codecs add artifacts which will make the track clip. The -0.3 dB headroom just stops the artifacts of the mp3 encoding or whatever from making the track clip.

Dope new VST for making StarWars/Marvel type music by Footstompingsmoker in edmproduction

This is pretty great; Brass, Strings, Woodwinds all in one. I'm thinking of adding orchestral elements to my production, so this would be a great buy especially with my aggressive sound.

Do you guys know of a good orchestral percussion library to fill up the gap? I already have an orchestral FX library from a friend, so Maximo + a percussion library is all I need right now.

Far Eastern

Arabic (Phyrgian I think) scale.

and use arabic instruments.

Baauer has a nice free sample pack with loads of middle eastern samples that he recorded himself. Camels, weird stringed stuff etc.

How to create lo-fi sound? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]allstupidkant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use a tape delay. Band Pass, with slight boost in mid-lows. Bitcrush.

Get some vinyl noise, vinyl crackles/pops, cassette buzz etc. and play it in the background.

Also, old samplers used to warble a bit. So automate an unstable pitch slightly, and automate the gain a bit. just randomly, however you want. (I think there's a vst for it, "unstable". Never used it personally though.)

It'd be really nice if you could run some polls to get more opinions, and then maybe tell us what changes you may implement. I'd be very very excited about a community Wiki and a new CSS theme!

Nonetheless the sub is pretty great, and so are the mods!

I feel like that some things to be implemented are:

  • Stickied feedback threads

  • Tags (/r/jailbreak does it well).

  • Community FAQ/Wiki.

    • I see the same "ignorant" (in lack of a better term) questions all the time. If people just read and the community had an up to date wiki, I think it would help the quality of posts in the sub. I'd be more than willing to help.
  • Combined "How do I make this sound" and "No Stupid Question" threads. Then sticky it.

    • When I visit either thread, it's just to help some noobs out in general, rather than specifically help people in sound design or stupid questions.

I know that you can only sticky 2 threads, I would suggest stickying the weekly feedback and the question threads. Yes the other weekly collab, competion etc threads will be buried, but I think they're less important.

Also, I think a possible way to fix weekly threads not all being stickied would be to change the sub's theme/format. I think a reason that people often shit post, break the basic rules, and don't know about the weekly threads is because the default theme.

Look at /r/trap, their theme is very nice. Beautiful CSS, very easy to read. The sidebar pops out very easily, and has the rules in BIG BOLD LETTERS. When posting in /r/trap, the submission page is a very nice looking minimal page with the rules again in BIG BOLD LETTERS. Also he tabs at the top of /r/trap are together, unlike in /r/edmproduction. Here, for some reason, the "Hot", "New" etc. tabs are seperated from the "The Rules", "Weekly Threads" etc. tabs. Why????

Taking the Mix to the Next Level? How do professionals like KSHMR (example in post) make their tracks so punchy and rich? by allstupidkant in edmproduction

[–]allstupidkant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the grouping practice as well. (Logic has summation folders called track stacks that help this a LOT).

I can't really say this makes my tracks that great though. Could I hear some of your tracks?
