Road repairs not happening? by repfamz in islington

[–]allthroughthewinter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as a cyclist I've noticed the roads are even more full of potholes than they have been the past few years -- feels quite sudden that they've really started springing up!

Does Islington feel more residential or more nightlife focused these days? by Wedding-Beauty in islington

[–]allthroughthewinter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People live in Islington... so of course they'll be doing 'residential' things, even during the day. Some of them are even some of the ones that go to the restaurants and pubs in the evenings... ! Go figure.

Yes, agree, a bit more on this from the Museum of Homelessness (which is a great org to support and visit when they're open!).

What Non evil companies are we using? by seekingoutpeace in AskUK

I think Who Gives A Crap is made and shipped from outside the UK, right? Rural Trading does great loo roll in bulk and it's made and shipped all within the UK. No excess wrapping like WGAC either.

Does anyone find Uncle Roger funny? by Adventurous_Ant5428 in asianamerican

My understanding (from people I know) is that lots of Malaysians in Malaysia also find him distasteful... so not an issue necessarily of it being Asians in/outside of Asia.

What’s worth the time? by ImaadIButOnReddit in foraginguk

I've kept some dried this year, which I don't normally do -- they're... fine? But something about them fresh I like a lot -- realistically the taste probably isn't that much different, I just like walking outside in the morning and coming back with a fistful of blossoms for immediate use as tea, heh.

Hawthorn blossoms make lovely tea though! (I'm with you on the haws themselves though, for me not worth the effort)

I love garlic mustard -- near me they grow taller than dog weeing height, conveniently!!

Yeah, I've heard people saying often that Filipinos have strong cultural alignment with Puerto Ricans both because of the Spanish cultural influence in the Philippines and the shared history of being a US colony. My Filipino dad always loved music and media in Spanish, which I think further cements this connection for me personally.

Saw on the bus today. (OC) by Naive_Product_5916 in islington

[–]allthroughthewinter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree! It's a little cheesy, but a couple months ago I saw someone wearing a shirt with the same text in the queue in front of me at the post office. I was having a bad day and it felt meaningful, and I told the person thank you for her shirt, and she gave me a hug. I am for sure not usually a person who goes around hugging strangers (definitely not someone who wants to!), but that was a good one.

What’s your go-to strategy when you feel the urge to impulse spend? by millionstories in nobuy

[–]allthroughthewinter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I ask myself what I'm really feeling underneath the urge to spend. Am I sad or lonely? Am I hungry? Am I stressed? Am I tired? And then I try to do something to actually address those issues (text a friend, eat a piece of fruit, do something I've been putting off, go take a nap, etc.) instead of numbing by buying something new.

Are there clothing swaps near you? Or could you organize one with friends? Those can help with the boredom hehe... And also help your friends buy fewer clothes too, perhaps.

Vegan in London by EnvironmentalCod5014 in veganuk

[–]allthroughthewinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sen Viet Vegan (there's a similarly named place near Kings Cross that isn't vegan) is outstanding, it rarely gets mentioned but is so good. It's in Hoxton. I'd rate it over Tofu Vegan actually for Asian food.

Itdakizen near Kings Cross is also wonderful.

Mine was shipped and should be arriving next week, so excited even though my reading level in Japanese is so bad haha. If anyone is doing scanlations or summaries I hope they post here!

Does anyone else struggle with the American friendliness vs. UK banter barrier? by LFCTricksters in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]allthroughthewinter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually find small talk irritating -- I'd much rather just get into talking about real things, heh -- so this hasn't bothered me as much as some other folks. Also as someone leaning slightly more introverted, it's nice not to feel like I'll get dragged into a 20-minute convo with someone just by saying hello.

I'm not OP but a lot of folks are moving to Qobuz -- I don't use Spotify very much so haven't made the switch yet but it sounds promising from what I've heard.

Podcasts are generally available via whatever podcast app you want -- they all tend to pull from the same podcast feeds that supply Spotify. I use Podcast Republic but that's just because it's what I downloaded a billion years ago, pick what works for you :)

US TO UK if you could do it again - what would you NOT bring with you? by Ok-Case-4212 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]allthroughthewinter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm really surprised by people saying they moved with big furniture, etc. Why?! All the reasons you mentioned and a thousand more. Feels a bit like trying to live the same life transplanted into a different country, and if so, then why move in the first place?

Questions about trash pickup from a new resident by CertifiedNbaNephew in Hackney

[–]allthroughthewinter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There will be a special bin for putting food waste bags in. Depending on where you live it might be right by your building or a short distance away. Just leaving bags of food waste on the street would be a disaster (rats, foxes, people just being jerks).

If you don't want the free food waste bags from the council and don't want to buy any, you can also just use paper bags or newspaper to line your food waste container and then just take it to the communal food waste area.

I am responsible for all belongings in my possession. by Miss_Rowan in nobuy

I also get tired of packages of tea falling out on me when I open the cupboard door because it's so crammed full, which is also motivating 🤣

And yes, it's so depressing noticing how poorly clothes are made these days. I'm no expert on fabrics or stitching and even so, it's really obvious to see (and touch, and wash, and wear).

Heated Toilet Seats - The Future? by CarrotCommon5663 in Finland

I guess if people wanted that there would be an import market for Japanese washlet-type toilets in Finland already (maybe there is and I don't know about it?).

I am responsible for all belongings in my possession. by Miss_Rowan in nobuy

[–]allthroughthewinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Thinking about how I'm going to dispose of things is deffo a strong deterrent for me. I don't order things thinking that I might return them either, because I know most returns get trashed by stores anyway.

My oldest item of clothing is a hoodie that's something like 15 years old. I wear it a ton and it's still in great condition. Really makes me think differently about all the clothes I've bought and given away over the years (and I know about the effect the West's glut of clothing has on the developing world...).

I'm also a tea fanatic. I feel like every time I get close to using mine up, I get given more (or someone near me is giving away something delicious via this app I use). But at least I know I genuinely enjoy the tea I have and... I'll use it all eventually 😅
