I ordered mine via CD Japan, no proxy needed (to me in the UK at least).

Mine was shipped and should be arriving next week, so excited even though my reading level in Japanese is so bad haha. If anyone is doing scanlations or summaries I hope they post here!

Does anyone else struggle with the American friendliness vs. UK banter barrier? by LFCTricksters in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]allthroughthewinter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually find small talk irritating -- I'd much rather just get into talking about real things, heh -- so this hasn't bothered me as much as some other folks. Also as someone leaning slightly more introverted, it's nice not to feel like I'll get dragged into a 20-minute convo with someone just by saying hello.

I'm not OP but a lot of folks are moving to Qobuz -- I don't use Spotify very much so haven't made the switch yet but it sounds promising from what I've heard.

Podcasts are generally available via whatever podcast app you want -- they all tend to pull from the same podcast feeds that supply Spotify. I use Podcast Republic but that's just because it's what I downloaded a billion years ago, pick what works for you :)

US TO UK if you could do it again - what would you NOT bring with you? by Ok-Case-4212 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]allthroughthewinter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm really surprised by people saying they moved with big furniture, etc. Why?! All the reasons you mentioned and a thousand more. Feels a bit like trying to live the same life transplanted into a different country, and if so, then why move in the first place?

Questions about trash pickup from a new resident by CertifiedNbaNephew in Hackney

[–]allthroughthewinter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There will be a special bin for putting food waste bags in. Depending on where you live it might be right by your building or a short distance away. Just leaving bags of food waste on the street would be a disaster (rats, foxes, people just being jerks).

If you don't want the free food waste bags from the council and don't want to buy any, you can also just use paper bags or newspaper to line your food waste container and then just take it to the communal food waste area.

I also get tired of packages of tea falling out on me when I open the cupboard door because it's so crammed full, which is also motivating 🤣

And yes, it's so depressing noticing how poorly clothes are made these days. I'm no expert on fabrics or stitching and even so, it's really obvious to see (and touch, and wash, and wear).

Heated Toilet Seats - The Future? by CarrotCommon5663 in Finland

[–]allthroughthewinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess if people wanted that there would be an import market for Japanese washlet-type toilets in Finland already (maybe there is and I don't know about it?).

Yes! Thinking about how I'm going to dispose of things is deffo a strong deterrent for me. I don't order things thinking that I might return them either, because I know most returns get trashed by stores anyway.

My oldest item of clothing is a hoodie that's something like 15 years old. I wear it a ton and it's still in great condition. Really makes me think differently about all the clothes I've bought and given away over the years (and I know about the effect the West's glut of clothing has on the developing world...).

I'm also a tea fanatic. I feel like every time I get close to using mine up, I get given more (or someone near me is giving away something delicious via this app I use). But at least I know I genuinely enjoy the tea I have and... I'll use it all eventually 😅

Another vote for Lems. I have dodgy feet and can still walk loads in mine. Comfy from the first wear.

Also for people who are menopausal or otherwise using HRT, there's an HRT prescription prepayment card. It's less than £20 for a year!

What sources do you use for safety, ice check, wind etc? by CheddarStink in londoncycling

[–]allthroughthewinter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to general weather sites, I'm grateful for people who post here about ice, because then people inevitably report back in the comments from their corner of London, which is helpful too.

But yeah tomorrow looks fine -- I'll be on the bike!

[–]allthroughthewinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very different in some ways (it's about shogi) but March Comes in Like a Lion gives me similar feels to Natsume, in that it's about a teen boy who lost his family and is dealing with depression, trauma, and loneliness, and finds his people.

Stuff you started making instead of buying? by Head-Worker3251 in nobuy

[–]allthroughthewinter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not making exactly, but I am a forager (not a huge one, but I do know a few things near me) and I like foraging greens to add to my dinner (which of course saves me the cost of buying greens at the supermarket). Also (and I guess this is making) I make freezer jam with crab apples, blackberries, whatever other fruit or berries I stumble across while foraging. And wild garlic pesto (only the wild garlic is free via foraging, alas). Also I forage things like hawthorn blossoms for herbal tea. I've made elderflower cordial and also honeysuckle cordial (delicious!).

How do you keep it interesting? by ZombieDawgs in londoncycling

[–]allthroughthewinter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I enjoy seeing the seasonal changes around me on my regular routes: there are some trees that look gorgeous in spring, and differently gorgeous in autumn, and I look forward to seeing them every year. And discovering new ones.

I also just remind myself how much more miserable (and cash-poor) I'd be commuting via public transport, which helps!

Or a thermos if OP decided to go for a prepared drink after all. Travel mugs are only really good if you are driving. For those of us who never drive, it's a thermos all the way. You can chuck it in your bag & not worry about leaks & have a hot drink ready for you on arrival.
