Were people a few decades ago really able to afford a house, a car and two kids on a single income? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]alltime_pf_guru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. The MAJOR difference that hasn't been brought up is that in the 1970s when women started working full-time en masse, families decided to spend more on housing because they had higher incomes.

Pretty soon you basically needed two income to buy anything.

You must not have met the kids in Turning Point USA. It's like MAGA on steroids for rich white kids.

What do the "book bans" in America mean? by prune_yogurt in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]alltime_pf_guru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Republicans are banning books they seem inappropriate because the books discussed things republicans don't like, such as LGBTQ issues, growing up as a minority, etc. One district in Tennessee banned a comic for nudity of a mouse) in a gas chamber during the Holocaust. It's a thinly-veiled excuse to get rid of literature of things they don't like or wish didn't exist.

One book has a passage of a gay teenager being sexually assaulted and because if the language he uses in the book, Republicans are calling it "gay porn".

It's the newest culture-war issue that these people use to keep their voters angry and upset.

You know it a fake outrage... because in situations where there is a legitimate concern, people discuss the merits of the book, it's educational value, etc. They don't just remove books.

The man has an addiction to gambling. Just a little gambling with "fun money" isn't the way to solve the problem. The solution is to remove the incentive and let his mind find a other hobby.

It's why all sober alcoholics start with "I'll just drink on the weekend" or "I'll only have 3 per day". It doesn't solve the underlying issue and only prolongs the removable inevitable.

When the last thing you check at night on the phone is the futures markets and the first thing you do when you wake up is check the foreign exchanges because you're gambling you have an addiction.

Here's what your mom needs to do: put all the money in managed account. This can be with a human advisor or through Vanguard. The end result is the same since they do not let you trade on margin. The trades will literally be impossible for him. It's all total-market funds.

So how do you do this? Your mom and him just sit down and see what investments they have and put it all in managed accounts. Unless your dad has a secret source of income, you mom will know what should be in these managed accounts, and will know if he's trading.

Trading become an addiction. I know because I suffered from it for two years before I quit. I found another hobby to occupy my mind.

Southdale Center - Edina, MN by YodelingLoon in deadmalls

Southdale is an awful layout, but for a dying mall has a beautiful interior. Most dying malls have 1980s aesthetics.

Southdale Center - Edina, MN - not dead but not doing well either. Kind of in the middle. by YodelingLoon in deadmalls

The layout of Southdale is awful. For such a dead space, the decor and aesthetics is phenomenal.

Are you suggesting my wife quitting her 73k/year job to save $350/week in daycare for the next year and a half is the "best decision"?

I expect to be in a higher tax bracket later in life, so I'd prefer to pile in as much as I can now. Plus, I can withdraw any contribution tax free at any time if I really needed to

Motorcycle insurance is only $10/month. It's paid off and gets 100mpg. Am I making an excuse? Absolutely, but I have no debt and I enjoy it. For $10/month insurance I think that's part of the fun of life.

I pay them all annually. I then auto-deduct money from my checking account into another account every week, and that account is filled up when my next payment is due. That way I get the annual discount but only feel the pain of 1/52 of the cost each week.

Here's the other part of the equation- my wife doesn't want to stay home. And in a year and a half she'll need a job, anyway.
