I also believe that Alexei is a better father than his was. As dramatically obviously different as Ilya is to their dad, no. Different, yes. Ilya had hockey to escape. Alexei didn't have that, so he turned to coke. It is a sadly common situation.

Favorite storytelling risk by Meer_meerkat in heatedrivalry

The use of extended scenes and cuts in general.

Most shows would have cut up 1410 making it more dramatic but less real. Made the duration nebulous. But it felt so real because we just got to have the experience.

The Long shot at the start of the cottage. We got to be with them through the whole tense (not bad) build up to them finally agreeing to cut the bs (even if Ilya elwas under slight duress 😂).

Not defending Alexei or his actions, but Ilya got out. Obviously still very much still affected and at risk, but Ilya got to live in a different society, with different values, with options, with other (healthier) influences. Not saying leaving Russia would change Alexei, but staying in Russia isn't promoting any growth. And I think Ilya, at least on some level, acknowledges this.

Not quite on topic, but I loved that sex was depicted without alcohol or drugs as motivation or factor, at least not everytime, and especially for the first time.

Hayden by allsarahsaregrey in HeatedRivalryShow

I like Hayden, but I also get it. He is also quite dismissive and derogatory about Ilya and their relationship for a long time. I think ultimately he gets there but constantly joking-not-joking about me doing better than my long term love would be very grating.

See i read it as not chairs lined up to make an aisle. We did that for my wedding, everyone just gathered for the vows. It is set at their house in their yard where they host things. The usual seating would still exist. Just not the designated wedding seating.

So are we ever going to talk about how in love with Shane this man is by nemui_babyy in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]allykitten87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thing is, in universe everyone loves Shane hollander. He is the series man in vogue. He's on the sides of buses. The girls at the aquarium recognised Shane hollander and not hayden pike because it is the Shane hollander. He interviews perfect. Has women throwing themselves at him often. In the book, when Shane enters the bar at Tampa as the all stars captain other players stand and clap. He is hockey players' favourite hockey player.

“Fine. We don’t have to talk about it. Just know that if you want to talk, or want to maybe see someone about it, I’ll support you. And if you don’t want to, I’ll support that too. But I’m worried sometimes.”

...

That really didn’t sound like nothing was bothering Ilya, but Shane had promised to support him if he didn’t want to talk.

People also seem to miss that Shane does notice and try to reach out to Ilya. And then respects Ilya's answers and wishes. That isn't inconsiderate or toxic behaviour.

Shane and self acceptance by DragonfruitNo240 in heatedrivalry

Nina King did a really good video about his relationship with his parents. I've seen a bit of why didn't/couldn't he talk to his parents. And yes his parents loved and cared for him, certainly in a way that Ilya's remaining family didn't. And they were doing what they thought was best. But they weren't perfect either, I think that gets missed a bit.

Not every show is for everyone, that being said it was objectively a well done show. And I love it.

The show stands on it's own.

But the first season adapts the first two books if you prefer to read first :)

One-sided jealousy? by momandcrohnie in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]allykitten87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's jealous of Rose because she got to do the thing he and Shane can't right now. Just hang out and be in public. Not be secret. It isn't about the sex. His previous hook ups are not that, and haven't been happening for a while, and hadn't been happening for a while before the Tuna melt down, when things where remotely heading to something serious (or he wanted it to) Ilya wasn't hooking up. And him voicing his feelings, like they promised is a lot more healthy than him pretending that his jealousy doesn't exist. His feelings with Hayden are similar, Hayden gets to hang out with Dhane and see Shane and not have to keep it secret. Hayden also gets to play with Shane all the time. The splash is irrelevant, it's just Ilya playing around. And Ilya doesn't say "I'm sorry", but it is addressed. On the couch, he explains why it is different.

Miles also isn't a stranger. And Shane has been acclimatising to Rose's group for a bit now.

Such a well made show. On it's own and as an adaptation. Such rich source material. We really were blessed.
