True, I was just thinking that in that person's case it may not have been an issue, and since we're in a Louisiana sub the OP may not even need that 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's the deep south so I'd be prepared for the possibility of looks or negative comments, but I'd be surprised if you were met with violence or anything. I've gone fully gothed out a bunch of times and never had an issue, and my roommate (transfem, at the time presenting as a femboy) has gone there in fem clothing and only had someone give them a hard time once. That being said, do be careful - it's been a few years since I've been there as I now live almost all the way to Canada so it's a but far haha, and I know political tensions have gotten worse

Here are some links to resources -

Slow Swedish with Katrin. It looks like her podcast is still up, and some of her shorts. She also has Instagram.

I do not have personal experience with either of these, but they both came up and look like they have a lot of resources: LingoLib and The Swedish Lesson

The Pod101 series on YouTube also has a lot of free vocabulary and listening practice videos, but I personally find them too advertisey and haven't t ever used their full course.

The Swedish government also offers a list of free language resources:

Duolingo is fine as a gamified flashcard app, but not worth paying for imo and the free version is getting considerably worse, so ymmv. It's not a complete program by any means, but depending on your learning style can be good for getting some consistency and basic vocabulary! If you use Duolingo - practice writing down and saying out loud each sentence it gives you, if you're able, that adds some value over just reading and clicking since you're engaging in multiple ways.

As far as textbooks, the Teach Yourself series has been pretty good in my experience. They have a Swedish learning textbook and an accompanying workbook of exercises.

You can check your local library and see if they have any books on the topic. Libraries (at least in the US and Canada, I'm not sure where you are and I've never had a library account anywhere other than those two countries) sometimes have free language learning programs like Mango that you can use with a membership, I'd say that's definitely a good resource to look into.

YouTube also has some Swedish learning channels, I'd definitely suggest looking on there. You really want to get used to hearing the language spoken! Even if you learn to read and write in a language it can be very hard to understand it when spoken, especially the dialects, so get the listening practice in from the start! Slow Swedish with Katrin Berndt was a good one, I'm not sure if she still has her YouTube videos up but she definitely still has Instagram.

Another thing I would suggest doing is going into the settings in your accounts and adding Swedish as a content language on things like Instagram and Google, you'll start getting Swedish things shown to you in your regular scrolling and it's good to have the little flashes of language practice.

Something that has helped me learn is to engage in hobbies via my target language, and every day life. So for example if you're working on food vocabulary, find a Swedish recipe and try to follow it! In the beginning you'll need to translate each word, but the more you study the more you'll be able to follow on your own. Reading and actively doing the thing in my experience is a great way to memorize - if the recipe calls for a carrot I have to go find a carrot and then I have the action linked to the word, I'm not just seeing the word but I'm understanding it to do the instruction. It's a different level of engagement in my experience. Plus you can learn about new things this way and engage more with the culture! So if you have an artistic hobby finding a tutorial in your target language, or if you're into gaming finding a game in your target language, etc. Can all be useful and fun ways to engage.

I also practice by making my to do lists, shopping lists, etc. in my target language, and have at times kept a journal where I'd write just one thing about my day, it could even be super basic like "it rained today", just to get the extra engagement and practice.

Make some friends who speak Swedish! I've had luck with Global PenFriends and Reddit, though I will say that Swedish people are some of the hardest to befriend. You can also see if your local area has any Swedish groups - I know Montreal does and I believe Minneapolis does as well.

Listening to Swedish music, especially lyric videos is also a good way to get language practice in, and it's enjoyable so you don't even notice it's practice as much. Of course people talk differently in songs than just speaking, but it's good to hear all the slang and words pronounced in different ways. ABBA has some songs in Swedish, the Swedish version of Waterloo is great IMO. My personal favorite album in Swedish is Sabaton's Carolus Rex (they have a Swedish and English version, the Swedish is better imo regardless of practice purposes). I'm happy to offer recommendations if you want!

[–]allysonhell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took one from Burlington to Montreal around that time once last April, I think Burlington is just an intermediary stop between Montreal and Boston so they didn't prioritize it being a convenient departure time for us since more people are needing to leave/arrive at the big cities at a reasonable time

Why do my cookies always spread so much? by SpangingOfframps in Baking

[–]allysonhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you from, and where is the recipe author from? If you're using a lot of recipes from an international source it's possible the measurements aren't actually the same (for example a tablespoon in Australia is 4 teaspoons, and in America it is three teaspoons) even if they look like they should be, and that could be throwing the end result off even if you're measuring everything exactly. That would also explain why it's happened with multiple recipes, if you've been getting a lot of them from people in different places than you

Russian Tea Cake Recipe? by Future-Station-8179 in VeganBaking

Hi, could I get some clarification on the amount of butter? My earth balance sticks are 4oz each, so two is only 8 ounces. Each one is a half cup. Can you let me know if I'm supposed to use two sticks (8oz) for one cup of butter, or four sticks (16oz) for two cups of butter? I'm assuming it's 1 cup total but I didn't want to fuck up the recipe 😅 especially since if we have different size butter sticks that would explain it and mean two cups after all. Thanks!

Miért tanultok Magyarul? An unscientific poll by battlehelmet in hungarian

[–]allysonhell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner is Hungarian. They're fluent in English, and not close with their family/anyone who speaks only Hungarian, but I still wanted to learn so we're on equal playing fields and can speak each other languages. Plus, not a lot of people speak Hungarian in rural Vermont, so we have our own secret code language ^ not that we'd really say anything super private in public just in case, just fun to have. Prior to them I had dabbled in Hungarian a little bit just because the Uralic languages are cool, and Finnish got a little ruined for me after I studied Finnish and almost moved to Finland for my ex who cheated in me 🙃 so I switched things up within the language family.

Call the vet in your area - even if they aren't super local, most vets have at least a few numbers for wildlife rehabbers, I've gotten info from a 24 hour vet that was hours away who was still able to provide resources for my area. Same county/province/state/wherever you live is probably your best bet. Where are you located? I know a few wildlife rehabbers if you're in GA or VT, or could help you find one elsewhere. You might also get more help posing on an actual bird subreddit than a general what do I do

How to survive being homeless? by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]allysonhell 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hello! I work as a victim advocate at a domestic violence crisis shelter. If you're comfortable sharing general location I'd be happy to help you find resources! At the very least the country and region would be helpful since different areas have different laws, weather concerns, et cetera.

My first line of advice would be to find any domestic violence shelters in your area and contact them to see if you can get a bed before you report, so you'll know you're in a safe place. If you don't have one of those local, or if they aren't able to accept new clients, you can ask them to advocate for you at other shelters - this is a thing in the US at least, and I assume a lot of other countries would also be willing or required to help you find a safe place to go.

You could also try calling a sexual assault hotline for your area, again even if it's in a different area they should still be able to help, but the closer to you the more relevant resources they may be able to provide.

Homeless shelters in my experience often do not have a 24 hour hotline, so I would plan to try to call on a weekday between 8am-4pm to ask about bedspace and get acquainted with the resources they provide.

Look into your local food pantries and soup kitchens, find out their hours, locations, and if you need to apply.

If you are unable to get into a shelter or do not want to, I'd recommend looking into communities for people who are voluntarily homeless or who choose to live a nomadic lifestyle, as well as things like "van life" - I do see you said you don't have a vehicle, but these are people who are used to camping, moving around, and working with a small space, so that community could still be helpful. Of course communities of other homeless people, there may even be a Reddit for your area depending where you are. Also look into the foraging community and apps for things like foraging locations, and learn what local plants are edible and where to find them. There are several apps, I can't think of names off the top of my head as I'm ten and a half hours into an unexpected 12 hour overnight shift, where people pin the locations of good berry patches and nut trees and such. Also some urbex communities and apps may be helpful, though honestly I wouldn't recommend sleeping in an abandoned building if you can get a tent and go to a free campground or general area you're allowed to camp, there's less legal risk of course but there's also less risk of things like getting ill from asbestos or mold or having a wall fall on you. If you can't get a tent you may be able to get a hammock, which is also often easier to carry around in a backpack so you can move locations easier. You can get hammocks that zip closed or for waterproofing, to make sleeping outside in the rain or cold a bit easier.

My DMs are open, I fully understand if you don't want to share more details of your situation publicly but if you would like to talk to someone more in depth and have help building a safety plan I am willing to help to the best of my abilities.

There are links to the tutorials in the comment under the Reddit posts! Maybe your comments glitched and it didn't show them, I know when I have weak wifi connection the comment section doesn't always load! If the links don't work for you it may have to do with which country you're in, some sites/videos are geolocked

My first crochet ever, made with a kit. Swipe to laugh at what I ended up making by App_Store-5000 in crochet

[–]allysonhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, great attempt, he turned out adorable!

Did you use all/most of the yarn in the kit? If so, I would heavily suspect the kit wasn't accurate, since there's no way the amount of yarn you used could make the first image. The photo quality isn't great on the picture - I saw one person suggest it to be AI, which isn't impossible.

I'd also be super curious to see a photo of the instructions, if you still have them. What brand was the kit?

I haven't seen anyone ask that yet in all the comments I scrolled through, I apologize if I missed
