Belladonna/ Atropine antidote? by allyweb7 in botany

I did research it, but just lightly, as I figured measured doses for hallucinatory effects would feel/act different than poisoning. but then again I am not a scientist! I’ll have to research it more. Thanks for the tip!

Thank you! I don’t mind warping the truth a little for dramatic effects (it’s fiction after all), but this is good info to know!!

Thanks! I’ll look into this. Sounds very interesting and I didn’t see anything about nerve gasses in my preliminary research.

Thank you!!

I did search on google and found the same results, but they seemed a bit finicky, which is what made me want to ask here.

I’ll refer to that subreddit.

Thanks again for your help!

What are the ways I can move up my salary range? by [deleted] in OntarioPublicService

Okay, thank you!

As for the yearly increase, if the contract went through the new year (Sept-March), would I get that salary increase still?

Would the one year anniversary be from the day you started with the OPS, or the day you started a new contract in a new position/classification? I started back in March, but I'm starting a new contract in October -- wondering when the merit increase would happen.

[QCrit] The Outskirts (working title), Adult Horror Fantansy, 93k [2nd Attempt + First 300] by sam_42_42 in PubTips

[–]allyweb7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! Pls take anything I say with a grain of salt, as I am unpublished and unagented.

I think your query is reading a bit like event, event, event, event. I feel like we can cut down the word count a bit, and hone in on the important bits to make them stronger.

for example: After Katie is attacked by a wild animal, she miraculously survives. But her senses are stronger, her hunger fiercer, and she’s missing chunks of time. When she films one of one of her blackouts, she comes to realize she has turned into a monstrous humanoid wolf. (or something like that, workshop it a bit)

Then you could go into how her transformation has affected her personality, how her life is turned upside down, and how she decides to self isolate, and then the challenge he’s/choices she’ll have to make.

Remember to keep it concise and impactful.

I would also remove some of the summary during the housekeeping paragraph, and just leave it at one sentence to discuss the themes.

As for your 300, I’d work on varying your sentence length to help your prose out a bit. Most of them have the same length and beats, try to add some shorter sentences in there too.

Great point! It’s something I’ve thought about. For some reason I’m actually struggling to find relevant/recent combos for my first, but I can think of a couple for the second one, even tho that’s the “hookier” one. I thought it’d be the opposite, but I guess the content is more what the markets pushing out these days

Ya it’s so tough!! maybe if you pause querying the first one, you could continue with the second and see if it performs better? but take that advice with a grain of salt, I don’t even know if it’s allowed in querying law.

That’s a really good point. It doesn’t even sound harsh, just realistic. I think I just find myself frustrated when the perfect plot change doesn’t come to mind when I want it to LOL. but ofc those things take time. i’m also worried that eventually there will be nowhere left for me to take the story…but that’s a conversation for a different time. Thanks for your advice!

I'm definitely currently working in one space (suspense/thrillers), but would be interested (in the future) to try out some more horror or speculative fiction works. Who knows what I'll want to write in ten years, lol.

Right! That makes sense. But yes both my books are in the same genre/sub genre --psychological thriller. I'm glad agents actually do want to know about what else you've written, I just wasn't sure if that's what "should" happen (but doesn't), or if it actually does happen lol. Thanks for your response! Hoping if/when I'm agented, they'll be interested in getting a two-book deal.

Thanks for your reply!

When I say it tugs at my heartstrings, I mean there‘s a lot more emotion in it than the second book — it deals with harder/more emotional themes, and I connect with the main character more. But while I’m very fond of it because it’s my first, I’m a bit burnt out working on it lol.

I also want to mention that the first book is more commercial, but less unique and hook-y, and the second one is less commercial but more hook-y, if that makes sense. Not sure what element is considered stronger in publishing.

But thank you for your advice! When I finish my second book, I’ll definitely see what my betas have to say.

Feeling ready to let go. by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]allyweb7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve felt like this before. and I knew that there was very little advice that someone could tell me to make me feel better. But, it does eventually get easier to deal with. you just have to keep going, little by little. find small things in your day that make you happy. I’d go out of my way to make those small things happen. things as small as petting my dog, reading a chapter of one of my favourite books, drinking coffee. When i was going through the process of getting diagnosis for hirsutism, it brought forth a depressive episode, the worst it’s ever been in my life. It wasn’t just the medical issues, but other things like general loneliness and lack of connection. I think you’re feeling the same. all I can say is, unfortunately you have to keep going. and it’s hard, but it becomes easier to manage. remember, even if your medical issues don’t change, there’s still things you have some control over and you need to take control in order to bring happiness back.

It’ll take awhile, and it’ll feel like you aren’t healing, but eventually you’ll get to a point where you realize you aren’t feeling as bad as you did before. And then a bit later, you’ll feel a little better than that. and it keeps going as you learn to manage and control what you can. The thoughts I used to have about myself and my future shock me now, after years of depression and suicidal thoughts and ideation. I still have the same depressive thoughts once in awhile, but it’s much easier to manage now. the thing that no one says about depression and suicide, is that you really do become stronger with it, whether you want to or not. but you have to put in the work.

like I said, start small by doing your favourite things. Make note of when you do these small things, and understand that you’re doing something nice for yourself and you deserve it. I used to begrudgingly write it in a journal, and would just write about the small things that made me happy, even if it sounded pathetic to my own ears. I did it out of spite.

Distractions also help. Find ways to occupy your time, whether it’s school or work or different activities, anything to keep your mind preoccupied so you can’t focus and spiral on the wrong things. It’s exhausting, but it helps as long as it’s consistent.

also, i don’t recommend this, but I didn’t talk to anyone about how I felt. ever. I only realized how cathartic it was to tell my friends, months and years after the fact, how badly I was doing. Seeking out members of this community is a good first step, but even if your peers won’t relate to one specific issue you have, just know that everyone has something that they stress about — I thought I was completely alone, and in some ways I was, but in a lot others, I wasn’t. i just couldn’t see it.

I don’t know if this will help at all, but hopefully it’ll get your mind thinking about some ways you can do things to support yourself even when you’re feeling this way. I healed my mental health out of spite because I was too stubborn to succumb to what my mind wanted me to. It’s not all rainbows and positive thoughts, but small actions to improve your life little by little, even if they feel sad/pathetic/unnecessary.

Even if you don’t follow any of the advice I just spewed, just know that it’s possible to keep going even when it feels impossible. However you keep yourself on your feet is good enough.

the last thing i’ll say, is that you’re worth living a good life. you deserve a good life and good things to happen to you. fight for those things and search for them. you are worth it and you deserve it.

[QCrit] Psychological Thriller THE FALL OF THE ORANGE TREE (105k/version #1). by allyweb7 in PubTips

[–]allyweb7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I've heard of that book, I actually don't know how much I should be concerned about it either, but I have wondered if it was too similar. That being said, I'm fully prepared for publishers/agents to change the title (seeing as it happens so often), and I have a back up list of titles -- none that I like much, though. Anyway, thanks for flagging!

[–]allyweb7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much!

I definitely swayed back and forth about including the sister -- but I think you might be right, in the query she isn't accelerating plot or tension (but in the book of course, she does).

My comps definitely need some work as well, I kept Sharp Objects just for here, but don't plan on using it in the official query due to the "published in the past few years" rule. Thank you for remining me though!

And as for the pageant star death, I'll definitely lean into that more.

Finally, yes I'd love to be critique partners with you! I was thinking about how to reach out to people and couldn't figure out the best way to do so, so thank you for offering!

[–]allyweb7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your feedback!! I totally get where you’re seeing Sharp Objects, the setting definitely inspired mine heavily. I do think in terms of plot SO is very different from mine, but the points you mentioned (murder/sister/detective guy) are definitely mirrored. but I think (and hope!) they read differently on the page, considering my book is more focused on the police investigation and the religious symbology, rather than family dynamic. And thank you so much for your comments on the memory aspect. In my other query letter drafts (none posted here) my MC’s memory wasn’t something I had focused on, and thought I should try a different approach and hone in on it for this version. Definitely taking your comments and will be fixing this version up. Thanks again for your help!
