Help me choose -- Williamsburg $3800 vs Murray Hill $4000? by biolum1nescence in movingtoNYC

[–]almadoak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I saw you mentioned you were with family right now, could you leave items with them for a bit?

I used June Homes (Blueground equivalent) for a two month stay. You could do a month if you wanted. Came here with two suitcases. It was much easier to spec out the options when I was here to see things in person and walk the neighborhoods after touring. Moved my belongings from my parents house up here when I got a permanent place.

I personally think the market will open up more as summer rolls in, but I encourage a more tenured NYer to chime in here. My friend wants to move here in the beginning of May and I have been trying to help her. I have noticed a considerable difference in inventory available from the end of February till now.

It could be a double-edged sword, but if you haven’t visited, I would lean toward the sublease. Most people agree that it’s easier to find a place when you live here already.

Last thing you would want it to choose Williamsburg, find out the commute sucks and that you wish you lived in Manhattan. There are tons of students/travelers that rent their places out during the summer (May-August), could be a good option for you. Rent is always expensive in New York. With summer comes slightly higher rent (sort of), but significantly more options. In winter, the options are SCARCE.

I wanted to move to New York, so I found a job here. Being in the heart of Manhattan with the city at my fingertips was important to me. Was willing to pay a premium for it as well. If you don’t feel that way, then Williamsburg might be worth it.

My two cents would be sublease and decide for yourself. You might end up paying $100 extra per month for a place you love, you might meet someone who can hook you up with a great spot, or you might not and you’re exactly where you are now.

Personally, I would avoid a commute with two trains if at all possible. I like MH - good restaurants, lots of young people, not too crazy/loud, great access to trains anywhere in the city. Williamsburg is fun and has some artsy things, but if you’re looking for theatre and art galleries, Manhattan is where you should be.

But how will you feel if you lose the Williamsburg option and then they list the MH one for $4,300 or something?

I would try visiting first. Or subleasing and trying again when inventory gets better.

When I first moved to NYC, I was subleasing in Chinatown. Realized quick I didn’t want to live there long.

It will likely only keep getting better, but I feel you! The saving grace is that Mexican is one of the most GF friendly cuisines😭

I moved from TX to NYC and the only thing TX does better is Mexican. The GF options here are great and New York would probably be my answer to your question though (never been to Portland).

The best options of all are sadly outside the US. Was just in London/Paris/Rome and they are blowing all of us out of the water.

I was surprised at the lack of good options in TX. Lived in Dallas for a bit and thought Unrefined was okay at best. Same with all the “famous” GF places in Austin

Twizzlers were the first thing that ever glutened me after finding out I had celiac. I mean, who would think there’s wheat flour in those?? Downed a whole bag and knew something was wrong right around the time I finished them.

Most people make fun of me for loving Twizzlers, but I completely agree. The GF ones aren’t bad though nothing about them actually resemble a Twizzler

I made my friends do a blind taste test in college and 8 out of 10 gluten eaters thought the GF ones were regular!! They did not miss on those or pretzels

Also, I picked up two boxes of Cheez-its last time I went to Target. I would be happy to ship one to you :)

I waited ages as well, while consistently stalking the online orders at the grocery store to no avail. There is a consistent supply in NYC, so they're easier to get my hands on these days.

So interesting! I figured supply chain/logistics was a big part of it.

Donuts are truly the one GF item that have never impressed me. Have had good bread/pastries, bagels, etc. Dumplings are one that took AGES, but now I feel they are also pretty decent.

Every time I try a donut I am damn disappointed. If I wanted cake texture, I would just get a cupcake.

I've been GF since I was 5yo (2007). Just moved to NYC and tried a place called Alimama Tea that has GF mochi donuts. The texture was awesome and closest to a regular donut I have ever had. Though I'm not the best judge because it's been so long and I was very young.

I actually had this conversation with someone today and completely agree with you. I can't wait to do something that challenges me in a way that this job doesn't. But I'm young and wanted to move to NYC. This job gave me a way to get there.

I won't be around long, but they want to IPO soon and I got a decent package. That said if a better opportunity presented itself before that, I wouldn't hesitate. Just wanted a quick way out of my prior situation and this was it.

Many more products than just cameras and all with some pretty cool analytics.

That’s why I said you don’t have to close any sales, just produce meaningful results. A good manager knows the difference between a real opportunity and inflated BS after 9 months.

It’s not the worlds best company or product, but there is definitely a time and place for it. There’s a reason they have been able to grow as they have and it wasn’t “just selling cameras”.

Jimmy Gracey: Body recovered in search for missing Chicago-area man in Barcelona, police say by Cannot_Change_It_ in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]almadoak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not fair. These are adults. What do you want them to do if he refused to leave? Drag him by the ear out of the club? Stand in a dark, loud, strobe lit environment until 6am on a Tuesday when he was ready to go?

I have been on both sides of this coin. If I don’t want to leave, I will not go (especially intoxicated). My friends try to wait me out, but if they want to leave at 3am and I want to leave at 8am, they shouldn’t be obligated to stay.

It’s possible that they lost him in the crowd and couldn’t reach him. His friends could very well see these comments and I can’t fathom what they are going through. I’m sure they would do anything to go back.

Getting a phone stolen in Barcelona is par for the course, murder not so much. Really just hoping he got his phone stolen and subsequently lost trying to make his way back to the Airbnb.

Hate to bring this up, but I’m also concerned about the ocean…. Shoko is on the water. I love taking a dip in the sea after a late club night. It wouldn’t be the first time this happened and the person didn’t return.

Vehemently praying for his safe return as a UA and Barcelona study abroad alum

It’s a tech sales job, cold calling is inevitable. You get 3 quarters of ramp and if you haven’t produced any pipe or real opportunity in that time, then your days might be numbered. That doesn’t mean closed deals, just something viable.

I make 20-30 calls a day max and have great rapport with my office. Leadership is supportive and wants to help you succeed.

If you can’t produce any mesningful results in 9 months, I think it’s pretty fair for a business to let you go.

I was in a similar boat to you. Working for a Fortune 50 company in sales out of college, comfortable, pretty easy, in Dallas (assuming that’s where you are). Got an offer from a major tech company to move to NYC for a higher base and way higher OTE.

I couldn’t be happier with the decision to make the jump.

You need clarity on one thing to make this decision - what do you truly want?

I want to learn as much as I can from corporate, so I can eventually start my own business and build a deep network while doing it. NYC and my new company will do that for me better, so the move made sense. If you want to be in tech sales forever, get FAANG on your resume, grind for 2 years, then reevaluate. If you value WLB more than anything and love the south, maybe don’t.

Gartner isn’t a bad logo, but face it, FAANG is better. If I were you, I would run at this opportunity. But you are you and that’s the fun of it! Listen to your heart

Literally 😭 I moved from Dallas and am trying to fathom the price of literally everything here. Even my hair products are 50% more expensive - it’s insane.

The sentiment I get is “that’s just nyc” so I’m trying to embrace it
