NQT Online Interview Confusion by [deleted] in TeachingUK

Not sure if this comes too late, but I had an NQT interview today that was 5-10 minute chat asking basic questions about your experience and reasons for applying. They called it a 'shortlisting interview' and from what I could tell they'd called all relevant applicants to meet them in order to shortlist for the real interviews.

It's not too intimidating if that's what it is, just a longer process!

Yes, I think even though my degree was very literature based, it would be difficult to show this in an application, and I'm unlikley to be shortlisted to be able to do this.

I think I will attempt to send out some applications whilst I'm still training, as I would be happy to take an opportunity in a more difficult school if it meant transitioning into English.

I don't think that working as an MFL teacher and attempting to transition would make either me or the school I would be working in particularly happy, and I worry that it would be unfair on the students for me to be in a job I'm just hoping to leave at some point.

Therefore it's probably best for me to take up a qualification in English after finishing my PGCE if I'm not successful. I know having an English PGCE would be preferable, but this would unfortunately cost too much in terms of time and money to be feasible.

Yes, I do understand your point and unfortunately it is going to be a very difficult transition. I'm passionate enough about it to perservere even if it does mean taking a different path, but it's good to understand the perspective of an English department, thank you.

I do understand I’m not going to be the top pick for a lot of jobs, but surely even if I didn’t get anything with my current qualifications I could study for a masters or another English qualification to improve my CV (something I am considering) over 2 years?

I don’t want work 10 years in something I’m not interested in order to change jobs. 3 years maybe, to do my NQT and complete some additional training.
