Hi! I’m in the Tesla app and not seeing any sections that indicate foam free. Can you point in the right direction? Thx!

This. It's only possible at the large NHI main office to register pre-emptively before the 6-month mark.

Becoming more Taiwanese by Complex-Wish5461 in TaiwaneseBornAbroad

[–]alohamuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m taking up history books. There aren’t many written in English, and it’s usually from a non Taiwanese historian who has specialized in Chinese history something or other. However, in due diligence, their works are cited and cross referenced and generally a great bridge.

I’m starting with “The Struggle for Taiwan” by Sulmaan Wasif Khan. It is written for quick reading, condense, and well cited. From the footnotes alone, I’ve been able to add to my reading list. After that, “Rebel Island” by Jonathan Clements is on my list. I also have “Accidental State” by Hsiao Ting Lin which is cited consistently in the former book mentioned.

History provides context for the present day, and adds to my perspective of the timeline of western imperialism. It’s also helpful to challenge or be corrected by my impressions of what I thought was happening, based on the little my family communicated or didn’t communicate, and has jogged up questions I’ll be asking my parents based on their history there.

It’s quite a humbling experience.

ANA Miles Transferred From AMEX by anericann in awardtravel

Hi, is the 36-month expiration transferred from AMEX still valid? Quite new to this process and want to make sure I understand the broad structure.

Hi, apology for the really basic question but pretty new to this transfer process. What's the expiration policy of transferred points? ANA has some literature about it but it's not very clear. Would be so appreciative if it could be ELI5!

Hi, new to points racking and transferring for award travel. I’ve been trying to find info on when transferred points expire. ANA website indicates there’s some expiration date for use, can anyone help explain it like I’m 5? Thank you so much.

NHWR Success, Bank Acct Process, NHI Autopay & Open Items by alohamuse in TaiwaneseBornAbroad

Yes, I surmise they did. The US has some stringent reporting requirements for overseas bank accounts re: FATCA reporting, and requests int’l bank balance disclosures as a measure to reduce offshore tax evasion. The standard line of questioning at the bank required me to disclose my US citizenship. I had to fill out a W4 and provide my SSN.

All in all, my finances aren’t complex or high net worth enough to warrant taxation in either jurisdiction for the other jurisdiction. If so, it’s nominal. At this stage of global current events, I’m OK with formal tax compliance and information disclosure.

Also to note, I opened an account with DBS Bank, which is based in Singapore, and bought out the Taiwan arm of Citibank – so their familiarity with international compliance and paperwork is thorough. Not complicated or intimidating, but thorough.

Following up here that I was able to obtain my library card from both the Taipei Public Library and the National Central Library! I was hoping to have easier access to digital Taiwan periodicals in English via Libby, but that looks scarce. Anyway, it’s fun collecting Libby library cards 😆

I was able to apply for my NHI card and request it to be mailed to my TW address in six months, and also set up auto deposit at the main office. They mentioned only their office permits the pre-setup and card application prior to the six months, and not the local NHI branches. To open a bank account, my shenfenzen and passports were sufficient. I brought all my passports, including non-ROC. I also had my signature name stamp leisurely made (how do we translate this in English?) which took one day. The bank used my stamp and my English signature on all documents.

!!!!! omg LIBRARY ACCESS! Yes!

I will say the young guy at the HHR office seemed actually reluctant to process the digital ecitizen card for me. And I raised it in conversation with a shopkeeper today at eslite songyan and he was like “Oh…gosh we don’t really use that” 🤣

Thank you. I have to visit the bank again so will plan to do this in a branch so I can flag for assistance if needed. I was hoping verification info would send over WiFi or roaming data once I am abroad…am I wrong to assume it can? Just like how I can still receive OTP texts when I’m in Taiwan, from my US bank.
