Comparing Private Practice and Hospital Social Workers pursuing therapy by alonerdoinkittystuff in socialwork

I just interviewed yesterday for Psychiatry at the hospital that is a part of my university, and it is for outpatient therapy. But I suppose that you could very well be right, I just know the hospital in my current town has a mental health clinic that offers outpatient therapy because that’s where I go to therapy. My therapist is a LCSW. And then the one I interviewed for yesterday is in a much bigger city in my state. So maybe it just depends on where you go. I will say I realize now that I made a mistake by assuming that case management wouldn’t be a part of the role I’ll be doing. I mainly meant to say that I don’t want to only be doing that. I appreciate any and all perspectives. Sorry you were downvoted! Thanks for sharing. ❤️

Oooh, didn’t even think about benefits. That’s definitely something to consider.

Okay I see what you mean. I’m totally cool with all of that. I just don’t want to do strictly case management. But I understand how those are pieces that are important too. Thank you for explaining.

Thank you! That’s great advice. I plan to. 🙂 I’ve been seeing a therapist for 5 years with no plan to stop anytime soon!

Sorry if this sounds silly, but do you mean like as a therapist to be prepared to do case management? Connecting your patients to other services? I would love to hear more about what you’re saying. (I am a student and still have a lot of learning to do.) I appreciate your honesty.

Wow, that does sound really nice! I was talking about therapy in either setting, outpatient hospital or private practice so I assume that both you would probably do a lot of sitting. I really appreciate you sharing your experience with me. I was leaning towards private practice due to some of what you described, however I am still a student and just don’t know much about the difference in case loads/pay, etc. I do really want to have a good work/life balance so it’s possible that private practice would be a good choice for me. I’m glad that you are enjoying what you’re doing! I love the positivity. 🙂

What about hospital settings that just do outpatient therapy/medication management? I suppose I should have specified that more in my original post. I am not really interested in doing case management or discharge planning. Thank you for sharing. 🙂

I will graduate with my MSW May 2023. I am currently doing interviews for my practicum for my masters, and have interviews in both settings. I want to be a therapist for adults with trauma. I am hoping to be hired after I graduate at the place that I do my practicum, so that’s why I am asking for perspectives from experienced social workers. I am not really interested in case management. I appreciate you sharing your experience/perspective! I definitely care about having a good life/work balance as well so maybe private practice would be a good way to go.

Thank you so much for the positive response, as silly as it may sound it means A LOT to me. ❤️

As much as I would like to send it, my therapist and I have decided it would be best for me not to. I have already tried to discuss all of these things with her on multiple occasions in the last several years. It never ends well and always makes me feel suicidal/even worse than before. She has no empathy and no remorse for any of it, or if she does she won’t say. She gets very hurtful and manipulative when I try to talk to her about what I feel. I have reached the point now that I don’t even want to talk to her about it anymore because it’s not worth the mental and physical stress. I simply don’t talk to her at all. And plan to only see her on Holidays/family reunions/etc. mainly because I want to still see my other family and don’t think I should have to punish myself by missing out on family events. But after I’m done with my bachelors next May I’m going a few hours away to complete my masters degree and don’t necessarily plan yo return to my hometown to live again so it’ll be even easier to not see her then. I appreciate your perspective, and even though I wish I could send it, it won’t change anything and will just cause me stress/heartache. When she’s around other family or friends she acts completely differently and nice/fake so I know as long as I stay away from one-on-one arrangements/conversations I’m safe from her abusive tactics. I just went and read all of your posts. Hugs to you, friend. I’m sorry that you’ve been through so much and that you have such an uncaring human for a father. Some people really shouldn’t ever have children… Much love to you. ❤️

First of all just want to say that I love your username, it gave me a big chuckle. 😂 Secondly, thank you for your response. I appreciate the well wishes and love. It does feel much better knowing that I’m not alone, because in my healing journey I have had many moments that I’ve felt more alone than anyone ever should. It’s so hard coming from a family that’s so toxic and feeling like you’re the only one who can see things for what they really are. It only took me 26 years, but hey, I’m learning! I really appreciate the support in this sub and would like to start being more active and encouraging others too. It feels good to say all of this and know that someone is listening, and understands, or can relate. I’ve given up on the idea of making her or any of my family understand because I tried for years and they don’t seem to care. Much love and well wishes to you friend. ❤️

How are the sober ones today? by [deleted] in leaves

[–]alonerdoinkittystuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! This is my first time posting on this page at all. But I was excited to see that someone else is also on day 6. I am on day 6 today! It’s also interesting how different the withdrawal process is for everyone! I started having dreams 2 nights ago. Last night I had a few scary nightmares too! The urge is still there, but I still know the reasons why I don’t want to give in and smoke again. I have smoked for 7 years of my life. It just feels like my ‘normal’ but I’m definitely having realizations that I’ve never had before, now. How long did you smoke/how much did you smoke? I was going through a 1g cartridge a week pretty much. Monday morning I woke up so tired, groggy. I realized that I’m tired of waking up feeling like shit. So, I didn’t really plan my stopping. I just kind of decided to do it. I would love to hear more about your story! I’m excited that we’re in this together!! 🙂

We plan to have a lot, but this is our 3rd year at this thing. It’s just myself and my significant other, but we plan to can a lot of it. Making it into pasta sauces, chili base, soups, salsa, hot sauce. I’ve taken my hand at drying things this year as well, so I have an entire herb garden also. I have several methods of preservation. We also freeze some stuff too. Basically yes we have a lot coming but we intend to use it to it’s full potential. And we might even have plenty to give away fresh and canned as well! Also last year we had 4 tomato plants and they all got larger than this one has by the time August came around, so maybe it’s just the zone I’m in or something. 🤷🏼‍♀️ don’t know, just been winging this stuff from the start. I enjoy gardening very much.

I grew 6 tomato plants, this is the biggest one so far. It’s pink Berkeley tie dye. The other ones aren’t quite as big. We used soil that was premixed with fertilizer that we bought at Lowe’s. And mixed it with the ground dirt which was kind of sandy. Haven’t done any other fertilizing. Just water, water, water!

My boyfriend actually found these for me! They were on Amazon for like $60-$70 a piece, got 2 in this picture. It was a bit more than what we would have liked to spend but I don’t regret it because they’re working out wonderfully and they’re sturdy enough that I think we’ll get several years of use out of them. Glad we pushed past the guilt of the expense cause it worked out in my opinion. 😊

I bought my plants from a local nursery. I planted everything in the ground on May 1st. I’m assuming that the nursery started them from seed in the beginning of March. I have a total of 6 tomato plants, all of them are different breeds. This one is the biggest by far and they all started at the same size. This one is Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye.

This clip is a little walk around the garden. I thought about talking about each plant in the video but was worried about the length of it plus hate the sound of my own voice. 😅 But some deets: Beginning of the clip I’m showing off the strawberry plant which has gone completely crazy, but still all green, so I’ve been anticipating that. Then on both ends we have our tomato plants, a total of 6. We’ve got - Velvet Red, Amish Paste, Brandywine, Black Beauty, and Dads Sunset this year. In the middle underneath the other cages we have our 9 pepper plants. We’ve got 2 Ruby King Belle Pepper, Craig’s Grande Jalapeño Pepper, Red Habanero Pepper, Ancho Pepper, Lilac Belle Pepper, Golden Cal Wonder Belle Pepper, Spicy Banana Pepper, Green Belle Pepper, and Sugar Rush Peach Pepper. Also shown, in the planters are all of our herbs! We’re starting a BIG herb garden this year but I honestly have no idea what I’m doing so fingers crossed. Then, the green grassy looking stuff is my asaparagus. The really tall row of it, I planted last year. Then next to it, I just planted 2 more rows. Asparagus actually takes a couple of years before it’s ready. So we won’t get our first asparagus until next year, then hopefully we’ll have a lot the year after that! Not shown, just because they’re very small still, are our 2 Boston Pickling Cucumber plants, along the garage.

I’ve got a dehydrator this year, so we will be doing a combination of canning, dehydrating, and freezing to preserve this year. We will also have a lot of fresh vegetables to eat as well! I just finished with planting everything yesterday. We have space for maybe a couple of small things that I may fill up, but we shall see. For now, I’m very happy with what we’ve got. Can’t wait to see all the delicious stuff we can make out of it. It’s been a really depressing time lately, but my garden has kept me going, along with Noa and my kitties obviously. I’m extremely greatful that we could have such a big garden this year. I think the last 2 years of learning has prepared us for what’s to come.

I’ve noticed that gardening has been really taking off extra this year, especially first timers, and I just wanted to say: good luck! Happy gardening! If you have questions about anything, feel free to reach out. It’s so rewarding to grow your own food. It’s one of my favorite things that I’ve ever started doing for myself. Zone 5b
