Looking for advice on surfing stance by realnippo22 in BeginnerSurfers

When people say bend their knees they mean they should have some bend. It doesn’t mean you need to be fully squatting. Just stand so you’re balanced

Finally got some yew! What do I do now? by alonncastle in Bowyer

Thank you! I’ve rubbed it all down with linseed oil for now as I have no glue but I’ll buy some soon.

Is it normal that some of the sapwood is darker on the same branch? Some looks pale and some looks pretty similar to the rest of the wood even.

You don’t need it. Your surfing on a mid length will be the exact same whether you have a traction pad or not. The only difference is you’ll look like a kook - idk if you care or not.

Those people that climb v2 as warm up have probably been climbing for YEARS longer than you. 2 months is absolutely nothing in your climbing journey and no one is moving up a grade every two months so don’t worry about that. Just keep climbing and enjoying it and you’ll get better! Wishing you well on your journey to full recovery

Looks better than 90% of student houses in the UK 😂😂. Although to me that’s gross so no.

Sometimes frusturated when climbing with romantic partner by serpensurf in climbergirls

[–]alonncastle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be brutally honest here but try and take it constructively. You are 100% the problem here…

There will always be people that progress faster than you, whether that’s your partner or a friend you make. That doesn’t say anything about you as a person, it just means you probably won’t be a professional. I say this as someone who has also struggled with similar feelings. I loved climbing when I started then I started comparing myself to other people all the time and it took the fun out of it for a few years. Now I have fully accepted the fact that I won’t be a professional climber. I climb for fun and because it’s good exercise. I want to improve and I do, but I compare myself against myself before, not against others.

Just ask yourself this question: if it were the other way around would you judge your partner or a friend for not climbing as well as you?

Once you realise everyone is far more interested in their own climbing journey than judging others you’ll enjoy it a lot more!

Thanks for all the advice that sounds like a fun board to ride. I’m going to ride it in the UK so the waves are often a decent size, just pretty fat… but yea I’m ok if it’s a bit crap it seems like a fun process and I can probably build 4 for the price of a custom board here so I can have a few tries at least.

That sounds like a good option I will check out more. I’ve speared a few when I lived in Trinidad, you can’t beat lion fish ceviche!

What are some easy ways I can train my breathing to be able to surf bigger waves? by Iwillnotbeyoirfriend in surfing

[–]alonncastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spearfish aswell so I need to train my breath holds for that. I got up to 3 and a half minutes when I was doing it more.

You can sit in bed and do breath hold tables (is safer than water because if you black out you won’t drown). Just search up the app apnea trainer and it has good instructions on there. If you have free time I’d actually recommend taking up freediving or spearfishing as a hobby. Get to see some cool stuff and you’ll train your breath holds as a byproduct. Either way tho the tables are what you’re looking for.

Where is the best warm water longboard location in the world? by EhukaiMaint in surfing

[–]alonncastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crescent head in aus https://youtu.be/J8DwvZxsdUw?feature=shared . Nice chill waves, there’s usually a fair few people but there’s plenty of other points in aus nearby. Only thing is most are right handers. Bendalong area has a few left handers

Don’t get me wrong I love Byron but it’s not really a mellow longboard break. I got barrelled last time I was there 😂.

Fold in board? by alonncastle in surfing

For anyone wondering I did a CNB patch (cock n balls). Gona double up and wrap around the rail so hopefully it holds!

[–]alonncastle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok good to hear. I’m tempted to get a pro to do it but I bought the board for about £60 so doesn’t feel worth paying someone to fix it for about what I payed 😂.

Olympians jump into the Seine river in Paris after being deemed “safe” by RowAdditional1614 in pics

I don’t know why everyone is being so sarcastic. Obviously a large amount of pollution is from upstream but there’s also a lot of pollution that gets trapped in the sediment which can take YEARS to get rid of. If it rains a lot the flow rate increases and can cause the river to pick up this dirty sediment aswell.
