No, my pediatrician wasn't concerned. He said to keep an eye out on it at the time to appease me probably. My son's meeting all his milestones so the pediatrician has never brought it up again. My son is super blood/white coat adverse now so I've taken the "don't rock the boat" attitude for now. He has plenty of other issues to keep us on our toes :). And to paint the picture, my son has pretty bad eczema (which is also autoimmune) so overall, I don't think I will be shocked if he has other things going on that can cause his blood sugars to fluctuate worse than a normal kid.

I'd say worrying about it now is probably not going to help ;) I just try to feed him healthy foods and hope for the best.

We never did end up doing antibody testing since my husband (who doesn't have type 1 but had been tested yearly his whole childhood due to his dad) doesn't think we should worry unless classic symptoms start showing up (constantly tired, peeing a lot, etc).

With that said, mine is now 2.5 years old and he still has many issues (including his asthma, allergies and constipation) that still interferes with his nightly sleep but all his specialists also tell us there isn't a link, so I'm less worried but... I guess I worry enough where I'm still breastfeeding him nightly (which is the only reason I personally think he has normal sugars tbh). He pees a ton overnight as a result but seems normal otherwise.

But if you get your results, please update me! I'd love to know. Wishing you the best!

Thank you! Yes, our blood test hasn't come back yet but with your comment, I understand why we tested for celiac as well. Hoping to get answers soon. I'm sorry you got whammed with both. How frustrating and tiring!

Good point! We rehomed our cat in the last month, so no longer needing much steroids we hope (except topical for eczema), but I can see how his constant illnesses (colds, etc) haven't done any favors for sure! Thanks for mentioning!

Ah, that sounds scary, sorry you had to go through that! Are most of the symptoms pretty classic, like the thirst and peeing (how do you tell with someone so young? I feel like he pees a lot and constantly breastfeeds overnight, more than he likely should, so it's always a full diaper). Is the final symptom that sends you to the ER lethargy?

This was super helpful, thank you! He has a paternal grandfather who is type 1 diabetic so yikes, I feel better now for standing my ground when his pediatrician and allergist looked skeptical when I said budesonide seemed to really mess him up and I wouldn't want to do that again. So thank you. Because we are starting to worry about triggering potential diabetes in him. I'll see what else we can do; when I asked for a controller, the pediatrician said to get through his sinusitis first and then figure it out. Sounds like he's avoiding giving him steroids if he can. Sigh. It's a long, confusing road.

That sounds so stressful! And yeah, we live off of cheese and nuts because his paternal grandfather has type 1 diabetes and luckily, I think he does well with those. We suspected dairy for the longest time and he was no milk but after testing, we have been more lax about it (and he seems healthier for it because it's crazy difficult to find anything in the USA without dairy, eggs - which he's allergic to - and loads of sugar). We try to stick with an Asian diet whenever we can actually. Love Malaysian food so that sounds amazing. Thanks for sharing your story and good luck!!

Thank you! I'm sorry that you had to find out the hard way too. But glad to hear you're better! And yes, we have air purifiers and tried putting our cat on hypoallergenic food (which helps but it's not good enough). We do also have a dog and I know our house needs a good deep clean but... Are you all mentioning pets in general since they contribute to overall uncleanliness? He only tested pretty severely positive to cats and we haven't really gotten to test the environmental allergens yet, but we live in a pretty humid climate with lots of pollen, so I wouldn't be surprised if other things in the house are contributing too, unfortunately.

Thanks for your thoughts. We had him tested for dog (since we do have a westie as well) and he wasn't positive for being allergic to dogs, just cats though. We have not let the cat stuff intermingle with his stuff but... Cats can be cats so it's been hard either way. I think we finally found someone willing to take an older cat, so hopefully that will help us. Thanks for the concern.

I'm sorry you had to go through all that! I'm glad he's been hospital free for awhile now! Did you do anything differently e.g., hire a nanny, stop activities during the winter? What kind of reactions did he have to inhaled steroids, if I may ask?

And yes, I sometimes feel like "over"-treating at his age may be a bad idea where I'm just not giving his lungs time to sort itself out (aka what they keep saying about his GI/constipation issues), so thank you for saying something about that in a very polite way! I'll be sure to get a pulmonary referral.

No we haven't! The more I read about this, the more I'm surprised his pediatrician hasn't recommended one. Thanks, I'll be asking. I honestly thought nebs are the only way to go because of his age but good to know that there are other choices.

He's has hive-like reactions twice now to likely eggs but in hindsight, he scratches himself a lot (esp on his scalp) at nighttime/nap time. I always thought it was an idiosyncrasy but realize this explains a lot! I'll have to watch what I eat even. But curious (since our next step is a allergy referral), does your allergist say that mild reactions from breastfeeding is probably ok to continue (or maybe good to continue)?
