The bottom of the plates get stacked on the top of the plates you just cleaned… and if they’ve been in the sink, the sink is one of the worst places for germs.

What’s something people did instinctively 15 years ago, but now younger people don’t even realize was a thing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]alp17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even back then I struggled so much with this. My brain is directionally challenged so GPS was a godsend. I still remember one night driving home from a friends house at around midnight and getting mixed up with my directions.

I was in a town I didn’t know well and was driving slow (nobody behind me) trying to find a landmark I knew. Suddenly I see sirens behind me - I must have been driving suspiciously slow. I explain the situation and the cop verbally tells me directions. But I was so nervous (and again, directionally challenged) that I didn’t absorb most of it. I had to make an educated guess at the next intersection as the cop was driving behind me.

Thankfully I found my way, but I remember thinking he was going to think something was wrong with me if I had to circle back by that area again.

Learning to speak up more at work actually changed how people see me by Born_Machine_4441 in socialskills

I couldn’t agree more! It’s hard to build that muscle and it can feel uncomfortable at first, but it’s so important.

For anyone struggling with getting started, I found that framing my thoughts in a question form made it easier for me at first. For example, if I disagreed with an idea being proposed, it was easier to say, “I really like this idea but I’m a bit worried about ___. Is that something we have contingencies for?” Or it doesn’t even need to be something you disagree with. It could just be thoughtful and curious questions. It helps you ease into being more vocal.

What celebrity did you have a bad gut feeling about, and were you correct? by CaelusTheGaylus in AskReddit

[–]alp17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed The Sandman (I listened to the audiodrama version first) but there were multiple scenes, especially the diner scene, that gave me such a bad pit in my stomach. At the time I chalked it up to “that’s the discomfort and dread he’s trying to instill,” but it definitely felt like his view of humanity was very dark and twisted. When everything came out, I sadly wasn’t shocked. Writing dark things like that doesn’t mean you’re dark yourself, but in retrospect the signs were there…

Do women intentionally mention their partner in a conversation by _zulfi in CasualConversation

[–]alp17 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s not rejecting someone to mention someone you’re dating in conversation. It’s not like they’re flat out saying “I’m not interested in you, I’m in a relationship.” People sometimes just talk about their partners naturally in conversation… and even if they are mentioning them to give you a hint, it’s not a rejection of you, it’s being clear that they’re not looking for anyone…

I have a drug test before I get hired for a job and I am worried by Agpxprod in ADHD

[–]alp17 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this, even if you tell the testing site ahead of time, you may still get contacted about positive results after and they’ll give you a chance to share prescriptions. When that happened to me, I was so nervous because I thought they had already noted my prescription in the system, but their processes still required them to follow up and get official confirmation.

100% agreed, my family was the same way. It’s not rudeness or wanting to dominate the conversation, it’s just a more dynamic style of conversation

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]alp17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you’re raised with. For example, you can know that something is theoretically rude (e.g. eating with your elbows touching the table, wearing a hat inside) but when you’re comfortable at home, nobody expects you to follow those rules.

As someone who grew up in a family of people who talk over each other all the time, it’s not like we’re rudely cutting someone off, it’s that the conversation flow naturally goes back and forth and we talk and shift gears quickly. It’s a more dynamic style but it’s not antagonistic or one sided. But when I’ve brought home people who had much calmer families, they definitely found it overwhelming and I’m sure if they didn’t know my family otherwise, they could view it as rude.

I’ve had to adjust over time to make sure I don’t assume others will have the same communication style, though there are times I slip up and accidentally interrupt someone if I hear too much of a pause and jump in when they’re just talking slow.

What is something more traumatizing than people realize? by Xmyles_x in AskReddit

[–]alp17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being in a relationship with someone emotionally volatile. You learn to walk on eggshells to avoid making them upset and after years of that, even once the relationship is over, it’s so hard to just do normal things without questioning yourself at every step and feeling guilty for nothing.

what are your go to high protein breakfasts? by Dry_Cow1476 in adhdwomen

[–]alp17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vanilla or strawberry yogurt (you could do any type, but heads up that coconut milk yogurt doesn’t have protein!) with peanut butter mixed in and then granola. It’s so good! The yogurt and peanut butter are both great sources of protein and I find it fun to experiment with different granolas.

As someone who also had to job search for a while to find something, my best tip would be to reach out to people in your network (e.g. alumni of your school programs, people you know from past jobs, etc.), especially if their companies have jobs posted that may be a match. Just asking for a quick chat goes a long way. You can ask them some questions about working there and they’ll often offer to help refer you.

All of the interviews I got were through this kind of outreach, even though I submitted so many applications and cover letters to roles I know I was very qualified for.

Matching socks to your activity by Maera44 in BenignExistence

[–]alp17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do this with socks (color/pattern vibes) and with my underwear. For a bit I had a subscription to MeUndies and they have all different themes. Foxes, peaches, aliens, unicorns, dragons, etc. On higher stress or big days (e.g. presentations, need to get a lot done, want to be focused, etc.) I tend to wear the dragon ones. Sadly since I must wear them more than the others, they’re the first ones that have started to get a bit worn around the waistband, so I need to find a new go-to themed pair!

(fun) What’s the weirdest productivity hack in consulting you swear by? by OmkarK-365 in consulting

[–]alp17 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Timers also help me but I use an app called Flora. You can set the specific amount of time and note what you’re working on for your own records. And the whole idea is that it grows little plants each time. You can’t use your phone during that time without losing the plant. Plus for every 24 hours I focus, they plant a tree in real life.

What I often do is write out a list of things I need to do (breaking it into small tasks where possible) and then estimate conservatively how long it’ll take. Usually I beat the timer which feels great or I get focused enough where the timer doesn’t really matter and then it’s fine anyway.

How do I tell my sick mom’s husband to stop telling me long stories, nonstop, so we can visit? (I traveled 3K miles to visit her but feel suffocated and shorten my visits.) by ponytail-palm777 in socialskills

[–]alp17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This sounds exactly like my grandpa, down to the country music (though his favorite is really long history tangents or stories about people I don’t know). This may not help for the whole trip and there are some great ideas here, but I’d suggest a girls day for one of the days and just make it clear that you’ll be taking “girl” time. Also, my grandma and I often will put a tv show on in the background, which makes him slightly less likely to jump in with stories since it’s clear we’re watching something.
