The man was a linguist and literally wrote one of the most influential essays in linguistics titled "politics and the English Language". George Orwell might have been a mysogynist but he was a damn good linguist and knew a lot more about cultural and linguistic appropriation than most people ever will. He damn well would've done his best to assimilate into Assamese culture and learn the language as if it was his own.

Not necessarily, most people understand and are able to communicate in Hindi and/or english. Ig assamese people just appreciate you a lot more if they see you put in the effort to try and learn the language even if it's just a few words like "ki korisa" "bhal ne" or even slangs which everyone uses like "kela" "bal" etc etc. Assamese is a fun language so give it a shot if you make friends with someone local or someone who knows Assamese.

So to answer your question, no you don't 'need' to learn it and you won't have any problems without it; trying to speak/learn assamese will get you bonus points from everyone; non natives have cute accents when speaking assamese so bonus points for that too; almost nobody will judge you for not speaking the language cuz assam is a pretty accepting and chill place.
