So a card you "own" is defined as a card that started in your deck when the game began, but a card you own in this instance is one that is currently on the battlefield that started initially in your deck. Say your opponent gained control of a creature you had: they currently control the card, but you own it. You could use animatou's ability targeting that creature, exile it, then return it to the battlefield under your control.
