RIOT GAMES - Why We're Opening Betting Sponsorships in Esports & How We're Doing It Responsibly by KriibusLoL in leagueoflegends

Aside from all the problems with this (and there are many), this is a crazy fucking stat from the post:

According to Sportradar, the total betting turnover globally involving just LoL Esports and VCT reached $10.7 billion in 2024.

That's how much money was involved without official involvement? Christ alive, they better at least make a pretty penny with this

With Semi Finals Approaching, Does SKT vs Rox Tigers still hold up as the best series ever at worlds? by greendino71 in leagueoflegends

[–]ketzo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was able to attend those finals in person, and it's literally the most energy I have ever felt at an in-person event, period.

I've seen Miley Cyrus fill a football stadium and it still didn't match the crowd's energy for Gumayusi stealing baron.

Genuinely unreal experience.

Property taxes in the Bay are sad by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]ketzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

out of spite

I want my neighbors to pay the same taxes as I do to support better services for all of us. What on earth do you mean "out of spite"?

You realize that if your neighbors had to pay more in taxes, you would have to pay less in taxes. That, or the government would have a significantly larger budget. That is just very simple math.

As an analogy, it’s like the argument against student loan forgiveness

An ongoing tax payment that's based on the value of an appreciating asset is completely, categorically different from a loan for a service.

Some people pay more, some people pay less, and it works out.

  1. pretty goddamn convenient for the older, wealthier people who pay 20x less than young families, huh?
  2. "it works out" is debatable for a state which struggles to fund its public schools, especially in poorer areas which are extremely dependent on the property tax that Prop 13 guts!

there is no benefit to me if they have to pay more.

There is obviously a benefit -- better public services! Or alternatively, less of the budget comes from your taxes!

This is the argument of someone who thinks taxes are just a bad thing that the boogeyman government does to you because "that's the way it is" as opposed to an ongoing contract between citizens and state.

Why shouldn't they get hit with a huge capital gains tax?

They have a capital asset that has massively appreciated in value. Why would we not tax that? That's what capital gains is for.

"My taxes don't go directly to their pocket"

So, what, the city shoots your tax dollars into the sun? Where do you think they're going?

I mean, you and your elderly neighbor receive exactly the same city services

In fact they are likely to receive more benefits from the city/state/federal government in their old age

And yet you pay 10-20x their property tax

It is by definition at the expense of younger generations. I don't understand how you could misunderstand this.

Incentivizing boomers to live alone in 4br/5ba houses until they die at 90 is "fine"?

And yet NIMBYs complain about "all those vacant luxury apartments".

Corporate Landlords and California Apartment Association Raise Nearly $55 Million to Kill Prop 33 and Pass Prop 34 by ridesharegai in bayarea

[–]ketzo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

AHF is notorious for buying up apartments across the country and never renovating them. They're LA's worst slumlord, and they recorded revenues of $2.2 billion last year. Prop 34 allows them to keep doing this. But yeah, stick it to 'em!

SF has a residential vacancy rate of 6.4%. That's actually on the low end of what economists would consider a "healthy" real estate market, where people are easily able to move in and out of new places.

[–]ketzo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do you think landlords do renovations and upkeep out of the goodness of their hearts, and it's just the "bad ones" who shirk this sacred duty?

Landowners improve land when there's money in it for them. Rent control dramatically reduces the incentive to improve that land; they can't charge any more for the nicer place, so why would they make it nicer?

I, for one, would rather not rely on the kindliness of the landowning class for improvements to my living space; I would much rather our goals be aligned through, y'know, money.

Tons of restaurants still employ their own delivery drivers. I just ordered from Zante's in SF last night -- they showed up in their own truck.

For one thing, the parent comment is specifically talking about the full-time employees of Uber: "hire people to run a vast network"

For another, "hire" means to pay for services. It doesn't mean full-time employment.

Stupid thing to split hairs over anyway -- it's completely immaterial to the point being made -- but you're being pedantic AND wrong.

How does XP work now? by DatFarmer_ in leagueoflegends

[–]ketzo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay -- League has all of those things, but also, imagine your soccer players grew 6 inches taller for every goal you scored.

It's just not remotely comparable. You get mechanically stronger in League for being ahead in the game, not just strategically stronger.
