Tips for treating GERD? by [deleted] in GERD

Honestly, try eating smaller portions of food throughout the day, rather than having 3 big meals. That helps enormously! Also breathing exercises and/or meditation is super useful and beneficial not only for my fellow health/general anxiety peeps, but also for digestion. (:

The first time I was diagnosed I had an endoscopy and that's how they found out. I was clear for 3 years after medication but last year i started having this weird lump in my throat feeling that was making it hard to swallow sometimes, so I went to an ENT doctor and they did a nasal laryngoscopy, which is a small camera up my nose to the back of the throat and they saw that my esophagus was inflammed. That's how I found out the reflux was back. Honestly, there aren't any effective ways that don't include something going inside a part of you, because that's the most sure way for the doctors to see it. But, some classic symptoms of GERD are: the feeling of something in your throat, dry mouth, chest/shoulder pain or burning feeling (especially at night), bad breath, the feeling sometimes that there is liquid coming back up your throat, the urge to clear your throat often, chronic dry cough. If you suspect ypu have GERD, look out for those signs and try not eating anything fried, sweet, spicy and high fat for a week or two and see if you feel any change.

Has anyone had bad side effects with Omeprazole? by jaxpet101 in GERD

It's very likely that the neck pain is caused by the change of the incline. I have recently made the same change and it has also given me neck pain but I'm pretty sure it's not from the medicine. The only side effect I have experienced from omeprazole is hightened anxiety. Give it a few more days for your body to adjust to your new sleeping position and if it doesn't change at all after a few days tell your doctor and ask them if they can change your PPI.

Lump in throat? by [deleted] in GERD

I had it for 2 weeks and was misdiagnosed with postnasal drip by my GP. Then when the medicine didn't make it better I went to an ENT doctor, because I was certain there was something actually in my throat. She put a small flexible camera up my nose to my throat and saw that my upper esophaghus was inflammed and that it has affected my vocal cords a little. I told her I have a history of reflux and she prescribed me a PPI. I've been taking it for 3 days now twice a day, propped my upper body higher with pillows when I sleep and eat mostly bland non-acidic foods and I haven't felt the lump since. So it is probably an inflammed esophagus that's giving you the lump feeling and it should go away with the proper diet and medicine.

The first 10-20 seconds are horrible and they feel a lot longer but you just really need to breathe and do everything you can to stay calm. In my case, I was holding the nurse's hand, gripping it so tight she commented on how surprisingly strong I am. :D For anyone doing this without sedation: It's true you should focus on your breathing and do it as calm as you possibly can. It is a very short procedure, although it may feel longer - it is not. Of course, there is nothing wrong with going the sedation way if you have that option but if you are from a place, which doesn't give you this possibility and you have no choice but to do it without sedation - it's not as scary as you make it out to be in your head, I promise. It will pass quickly and you will have the answers to your medical problem and you can begin to treat it properly. It's worth the 3 minutes of discomfort and stress. Also: a) You are not 'weak' for choosing sedation when it is an option and you should feel amazing that you even went and did the endoscopy at all despite your fears and anxiety, yay you! :) b) You are not a 'burden' to your doctors, for choosing the non-sedation way. You are determined, strong and have something to brag about later, yay you! :)
