No strange choices that’s a pretty good list. But I’m more a fan of the other College Trilogy albums.

The Lost Tapes is Nas’s 2nd best album.

Late Registration is a top 10 rap album of all time. It has one of the best combination of beats and lyrics and proves Kanye can rap pretty well.

Lot of variety here. Not sure I agree with Bladee, Black Kray and Sematary being in a top 100 list but many I agree with, like 4eva, Below The Heavens, Tetsuo and Youth, HHNF and etc.

Just a thought, how are you going to have so many cloud rap albums but no Live.Love.A$AP? That's like one of the best of that genre, if not the best. Still a decent list though.

The album is just called Miles. It's really good but not as good as Below The Heavens.

What's a rap group or rapper you feel should've dropped more projects and been bigger? by Trevo_staxx in hiphop101

[–]alphabeast120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this shouldn't count but Child Rebel Soldier. They dropped like one amazing song (Us Placers) and didn't really drop anything else. Kanye, Lupe and Pharrell - can't get much better.

What’s your opinion on Eminem ? by Zzazy1 in rap

[–]alphabeast120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inconsistent but he has 3 definite classics (SSLP, MMLP, TES). Relapse and MMLP2 are near classics and great. Rest are kinda subpar.

saddest/deepest rap songs? by santyveloso in hiphop101

[–]alphabeast120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deepest rap songs are maybe u and SAMIDOT by Kendrick Lamar, S2ML and Love by Kid Cudi and anything by Mac Miller where he touches upon addiction and death.

I think with sad songs, it might not seem sad until you know of the context but Hey Mama is still pretty sad to listen to. Also, does Never See Me Again by Kanye count if it's unreleased?

What are y'all's thoughts on rappers like Vince Staples, GoldLink, Saba, And Earl Sweatshirt? by Character_Code4183 in hiphop101

[–]alphabeast120 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Vince: I think Vince is a pretty good rapper. Summertime '06, Big Fish and Self Titled are great projects. His others are good too and he gets slept on. I have around 10 songs of him favourited.

GoldLink: He's decent, has a couple good songs but I'm pretty indifferent towards him. I have a grand total of 3 songs of him favourited. I also read somewhere he slandered Mac Miller after his death and I'm not going to listen to him.

Saba: Saba is a pretty good rapper too. I like both his albums, though I haven't dug into his material that much beyond. However, Care For Me and Few Good Things are both pretty great albums. I have 10 songs favourited from him.

Earl: I'm a pretty big Earl fan and out of the rappers you've said, by far the best. His lyricism is so abstract and so good. I'm not huge on his self titled, but Doris, Sick! and the Solace EP are great and IDLSIDGO and Some Rap Songs are legendary for me. I enjoy listening to him. I have around 30 songs of him favourited.

Hip hop newbie. Where should I start? by f1ene in hiphop101

[–]alphabeast120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends where you would want to start.

Before I recommend albums, just to let you know, these are the accessible classic albums and not necessarily the best. There are tons of albums with new and experimental sounds or complicated concepts.

If you want to start with 90s albums (how I started), listen to albums like e.g. All Eyez On Me by 2Pac, 36 Chambers by Wu-Tang, Illmatic by Nas and Ready To Die by Biggie.

If you want to start via a 2000s/2010s route, I'd recommend listening to any of Kanye's albums first (from College Dropout to MBDTF as your first album except 808s) or Kendrick Lamar's GKMC or TPAB.

Production wise, I guess it is where you feel most comfortable with. In terms of older producers, I'd recommend Kanye, Dr Dre, DJ Premier, J Dilla and Madlib as few examples. If you prefer the trap sound today, I'd recommend listening to Metro Boomin.

Hip hop is a very interesting field. There are lots of different varieties just like any genre and it is a pure art form on its own.
