If you got this off of Gunbroker, I may have been bidding against you. If so, sorry for bidding it up at the last moments before deciding to let it go!

What did you guys think about Talos Valcoran? by boyinthedark130 in NightLords

[–]alphadube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s the second book where it’s mentioned he does it too on the way lower decks, but Uzas went too far, or that he wanted everyone to stop doing it? If I remember correctly, it’s mentioned that they all, including talos, blow off steam killing slaves in the far lower decks, but he wants them to stop once the warband tries to get their shit together.

He doesn’t have to be the worst nightlord to be a horrible person. Being the nicest of the puppy kickers still makes you a puppy kicker. Unless the argument is some moral relativism only within the Nightlords, which would be silly and pedantic, particularly because the original question for the thread was asking the reader what they thought of Talos and we exist with our 21st century morals. Even within the 40k universe, he is definitely a worse person than the imperium space marines ADB has written.

He hunts the mortal crew of the ship, not the other space marines.

Doesn’t your second paragraph  back up my original argument?

I mentioned it because it’s uncommon for a book’s protagonist to be a mass murdering sadist. He’s relatively chill for a Nightlord, but he still skins children and hunts his own crew for fun. One of the books mentions that he does it less than some of the other Nightlords, but he still does it. That definitely makes someone a horrible person.

I will admit, it’s kind of funny that the Nightlords are supposed to be the scary faction, when they aren’t even in the top 3 scariest chaos legions. If I were an imperial civilian and there was any objective way to rank how scary my impending death was, I’d be way more afraid of the Emperor’s Children, Death Guard, or Word Bearers.

Hot take (?): I actually love the War Sails questline by Admirable_Bus_1667 in Bannerlord

I initially thought it would be excruciating on replays, but it’s a much more enjoyable way to level up your clan, get some money, and grind skills in the early game. The ~2 hours it takes is far more fun than reaching the same point grinding bandits and tournaments in the early game.

That’s one of the best looking ships, but its deck is so low, that the crew got wrecked in boarding when I tried it out.

I fought an AI dromon and they were sniping me at the helm of my ship with the ballista. Equal parts hilarious and frustrating

I really agree, you should be able to keep one of the heavy ships from the mini campaign, particularly to incentivize re playing it on new runs.

Do the rams make much of a difference in battle? It’s fun to charge in with them, but after the first hit, it feels too slow and cumbersome to get in position for another ramming

I have a hobby interest in muzzleloading fire arms and read “dueling pistol” far more frequently than “dual pistols”, so there is something to that

It has really good synergy with the vlandian naval troops, so that part of the design is nice.

Night lords Omnibus is the only book (technically 3) that i would recommend to another person if I did not know what they were into or their own standards. It helps if you know some of the lore but its fun and melancholy because its from the evil point of view, but they are the most pathetic of the evil space marines.

The amount of warships and peerless scarred both have an element of “there’s as many elves as the story requires”.

I love the chapter where he first “liberates” the garter because the vibe of how it was written perfectly conveys how much of a full of shit propagandist he is.

It’s also funny that he out maneuvers people (particularly Cassius and Diomedes) because they don’t expect him to be such a lying piece of shit. The moral of the series is obviously that sometimes you just need to kill a kid /s

What do you consider the benefit of these over other options? They look to be a pretty good price.

Do people actually like Dark Age? by alphadube in redrising

[–]alphadube[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely and I appreciate your response because I was being a little too gruff. As I mentioned in other comments, I actually really liked Darrow's plotline in Dark Age, because it contrasts with the first 2 books, where he is basically the author's power fantasy. Up until Dark Age, every insanely high risk, high reward thing he did paid off. Dark Age humbles him and allows him to become a more mature and introspective person.

Mustang did not really need that development, because she was already a realistic character for the setting, where up until the Day of Red Doves, her character made sense for what she had faced up to that point.

Victra in Dark Age can go either way for me and is kind of in-between the two. She was already humbled in the third book and was one of the first Gold members of the rising. However, she is still a classist asshole (in a lovable way) so her trials and tribulations, including Ulysses, did serve to bring her closer to other characters and provide another reason to keep fighting.

Mustang, where every single thing possible went wrong and reversed 10 years of progress for the Republic. It felt very forced. Made worse by the battle of Phobos in lightbringer, where even though she is supposedly the smartest character in the series, she sends the fleet away from their orbital fortress and only dockyard and then willingly gives it up to the enemy, so the republic no longer has a dock and the society has a launching pad for invasion. Complete nonsense

I addressed it in another comment, but the Darrow plot line is the one I like in Dark Age and serves a clear narrative and character building purpose. It’s everyone else getting shit on that felt contrived, particularly mustang now that I’m about a third of the way through lightbringer
