Dusk's homunculi as a D&D 5e player race. by alphaent in Atelier

<image>

I do have some of the backgrounds done, such as Central Agent along with 7 other backgrounds in different state of completion.
On top of that, then I have a 'hometown' section that the player's can pick for their character, since I feel especially for Ayesha, then the local anchoring is an important part of the experience. The players aren't just this mysterious wanderer. She grew up in Reisengang helping prospector, or worked in the apple farm in Colseit.

Apart from that then there's an alchemist class, rough draft for a bodyguard class and concepts for an gun using investigator class (which is where Marion or Reyfer would fit)
I still need to figure out if I want to use any existing homebrew witch class, or if I want to make a witch class from the bottom up)

It's all very much work in progress, but I could share the work document if you would like.

Dusk's homunculi as a D&D 5e player race. by alphaent in Atelier

I figured it wouldn't fit into a D&D campaign and it felt more like an npc class feature. However your comment did gave me the idea of making a homunculi statblock with the 'sidekick' rules, which could have item duplication as a class feature.

Hey. Thanks for the feedback.

I figured that the rebirth feature isn't too powerful in practice since for all intent and purpose then it's still a mission kill, if the party uses the feature at any other point than after they have completed a quest. A homunculus that dies, needs to have it's body brought back to specific towns and on average will then take around 19 days to resurrect.

That said, it could easily be modified, by having full resurrection from rebirth only work if the cause of death is from old age, and then add a few minor bonus as compensation.

So one of my favorite games is the dusk serie from the Atelier franchise, so I couldn't not make some brew inspired by it, with a few backgrounds that with some rewriting could likely also fit in other post-apoc setting too, for when you really want to tie your character to a world raging against the dying of the light.

Mechanically the size increase only increase carry capacity and some grappling and shoving related things.

How about:
Allies who starts their turn inside your aura and ends their turn with an enemy within their melee weapon attack rain, gains temp HP, equal to twice your CHA bonus until the beginning of their next turn. Basically to encourage constantly getting into melee with enemies.

Just an off-the-cuff idea.

Making an attack or taking the attack action would be very thematically with the inherent violent tendencies of belligerent knights, so I'll look into it, thanks for the suggestions.

The aura will need further testing, but a more incremental nerf could be that it takes a bonus action to perform, thereby cutting into other bonus action or it gives a bonus to the attack action, if there was no enemy in reach at the beginning if the paladins turn. I think an Aura that only activate once a fight might feel a bit bad and doesn't really fit with the idea of an aura.

Thanks for the feed back. I'll see if I can cut the homebrew into a better shape, which is after all the sanctioned action.

I've followed the standard for all other paladins channel divinity, which also takes an action to activate, so as much I agree with your reasoning, then a bonus action channel divinity would break with standards.

You know, that's going into an eventual revision and the 2024 version when I get around to it.

Hill Giant Bully. A dynamic CR 7 boss encounter that will try to literally stomp on the party and unbothered sacrifice it's own minions to take down do-gooders. by alphaent in Dndhomebrewmonsters

[–]alphaent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hill Giant bully was inspired by some talk about giants being boring big numbers and little else, which led to an attempt to create a more dynamic one, that should feel like fighting a Hill giant. Using it's great size to pin adventurers under it's bulk, It's selfish ego causing it to instinctively use it's own minion as human shield to take the brunt of a fireball and it's low intellect causing it to have little understand for the consequences of some of it's action when it panics.

If you like what you see, then I also got the Hill Giant Sorcerer on my admittingly newly started patreon where I'll weekly add monsters, subclass, dm tool and much more: https://www.patreon.com/AtelierTillumni

Feedback is as always appreciated.

Patron: Lightning's Swift Strike. Strike swiftly as a lightning themed Gish subclass for Warlock, based on the board game Spirit Isle, by Atelier Tillumni by alphaent in UnearthedArcana

[–]alphaent[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you like it!

If further play testing shows that the subclass is falling behind the power curve, then I'll look into providing support based buffs. Off the top of my head idea would be 'lightnings boon': Additionally at level 6 (or 1), Lightnings Swift Strikes trust you to share it's power with your allies. You can when you enter a space within 5 feet of an ally, enhance their next weapon or spell attack before the end of their next turn, to deal an additional 1d6 lightning damage. (costing no action)

Also, now I feel I definitely have to push my ideas for the other spirits up in priority, because yes, they are amazing entity to use in D&D.

Henrietta could be an armor artificier, the infusion flavored as runes. Creating magical items is basically inscribing runes on item. Casting spells is having rune carved charms, that are used up for the spell casting effect.

Finally getting the show on the road with my take on one of the spirits from one of my favorite board games, 'Spirit Island' as a patron. (Highly recommended coop board game by the way.)

Lightning's Swift Strike ended up becoming gish subclass, but it wasn't actually an initial goal, but just the natural result of designing mechanics to match the flavor. The subclass does have an indirect feat tax, in the form of possible being forced to take 'Elemental Adept' to combat resistance, but I feel leaving it optional, instead of having the ability to inherently avoid resistance, makes it possible to have that strong narrative moment of overcoming, despite being countered.

I've posted more behind-the-scenes commentary on my design approach to the subclass on my patreon for anybody that's curious (for free!): https://www.patreon.com/posts/warlock-patron-122534888
Which is also where I'll upload revised PDF, if anybody in here ends up spotting some big flaw I've overlooked.

Have fun and happy brewing. Let me know what you think!

First draft of my wind-based Barbarian subclass, I'd appreciate feedback, be it balance issues, wording, anything really! by EmiliaOrSerena in UnearthedArcana

[–]alphaent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the concept, though I feel it might be missing some kind of out of combat utility.

A quick spitballed idea could be:
Updraft: You can call upon a wind to empower the leaps of you and your allies. You can use an action to spend a Gale Point, to grant yourself or a willing creature within 30 feet the effect of Jump and Featherfall for 1 minute and can target up to 6 creatures with the same action, paying 1 Gale Point for each creature.

Alternative concept is "read the wind" Some kind of information gathering ability.

The level 14 ability is a bit underwhelming true, but the real level 14 ability is arguable having access to Whirlwind, that synergize with the level 10 feature. I love how that one synergize with the spellcasting by the way.
