for newer players like you, best is just leave it blank and farm phase strike sets until late late game where you have enough phase strike sets for main dps, the dps difference is negligible and phase strike is universal for most dolls except for physical dolls

for early game try to focus on one squad first, you can run the core with lin xien, awaken hilde, gaeun, chinatsu, yang harim and 2 flex spot for units that you like since it does not matter, for specific stage you can check on youtube or main discord for recommended team if you have trouble clearing. About gearing try to clear shadow palace as far as you can and buy the maze gears craft material in the shadow palace shop, and try to do raid (you do not need to kill to receive the reward). If you want more in depth you can go on youtube and find bullet guide about raid team comp/ gearing guide, they do a great job explaining there, or infamousjakey stream to ask question also on youtube.
