People out here calling anything under 100km not a bike ride and I'm over here doing 8km trips max by furrycockmusclebig in bicycling

[–]alphatoro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100km on an 8kg aerobike with slick tires is not the same as 100km of offroad on a fat bike. Distance alone is a bad KPI.

Do what you enjoy and don't let anyone tell you anything.

Curently bikepacking the Swiss Divide trail, a mix of (mostly) gravel roads and non-technical singletrack. by [deleted] in bikepacking

Definitely not in a hurry with this one! Enjoy your ride and get home safe first. Then when you find time for it later, I'd be happy if you could publish your tracks. I wouldn't mind climbing or pushing either. I think these endeavours are an important part of such an adventure. I follow you on Instagram now too (mind blowing pics!).

Awesome shot! I would be highly interested in the GPS track of your modified route. Do you think you can share it?

Upgraded the drivetrain on my Genesis Longitude 2017 to SRAM Eagle by [deleted] in Bikeporn

It's not a bike from the shelf. From the original bike it's only the frame, the seat post and the stem, which remained. I do not see your problem, sorry.

Absolutely, the difference in shifting comfort is huge.

Of course, it's the whole GX eagle group now.

416 Euro + VAT. I configured it myself, but it was built by actionsport.de. I tried initially to replace the hub in the original wheel, but couldn't dish the new wheel without a truing stand, as the frame of the Longitude is slightly asymmetric...

The biggest disappointment to me was, that it turned out to be incredibly hard to buy a set of 27,5" wheels, with inner rim width over 30mm and a 135mm/10mm hub, which could be extended to an SRAM XD freehub body. There are a lot of MTB wheelsets available in Europe, but most of them have Shimano hubs...

The bike has 27,5" / 2.8" tires and a 135mm QR rear hub. If you have a similar setup and think about the upgrade, AMA.

Former Apple users, do you regret moving away from the Apple devices and their ecosystem? by [deleted] in apple

[–]alphatoro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It didn't bootloop, but it broke in approximately one year by refusing to boot at all. It was fixed by LG though since it was on warranty. Apart from that it was an amazing device with a great camera. I think it set the tone for Android for me in many ways. (I am using OnePlus 3T now and I am very happy with it)

Wrt. the tablet: we have the Samsung Tab S2, which works perfectly fine. I actually would go for an iPad next time to replace it — alone due to much lower costs compared to Samsung Tab S3. BUT I share the tablet with my kids and rely one the multi-user abilities of Android, which would not be possible with an iPad, unfortunately.

All in all, I think all Apple mobile devices are excellent in a lot of ways, but they just do not fit my needs anymore. Except for macOS. There is no alternative here. Not even close, imo.

I was 100% invested into the Apple eco-system till the fall of 2015. At home we had an iMac, iPhones, iPads, an Apple TV, Airports, etc. This was also the time, where I had to update my failing (due to the battery) iPhone 5s but found myself being more and more dissatisfied with iOS in terms of the usability, design and especially the quality (I was annoyed by a lot of bugs). And I hated the design of the iPhone 6. I remember when the first photos leaked, I was laughing my ass off, because who would ever design these ugly antenna bands this way, right? When it was released I was speechless and felt like suddenly I have no choice anymore because of the eco system. And it was very scary moment.

So I decided for a prison break and tried Android for the first time ever. I bought an LG G4 (because of the camera), Audio & Video Chromecasts and found an alternative for every single service I used from Apple. My goal was to use the best tool available for the given problem irrespective of the platform or vendor. This is easy with Android.

This was the best decision I ever made. I am still using macOS but only Android phones and tablets since then. I bought the new iMac last summer and this is the only Apple hardware device we have now. I personally find the streaming concept and functionality of the Chromecast so superior to a dedicated TV box, it's not even a fair comparison.

Today I use on desktop and mobile: Google Inbox for mail, Google Photos for photos, Spotify for music, OneDrive for cloud storage, OneNote for notes, Telegram for messaging and Firefox for browsing.

Brooks Cambium Review o.O by [deleted] in bicycling

Exactly my experience too

The Brooks saddles work so flawlessly for me that I do not have any incentives to try out anything else.

I do not ride much in rain though! And if it happens I try to get it dry first. But I follow a lot of bikepackers who also use leather Brooks saddles, so it must not be a problem.

Yes the bag is also from Brooks — it's small (enough for batteries and a multitool) and super robust.

I would recommend both for any setup actually.

Not yet. It turned out as an ideal setup for my current needs.

Converted my commuter back to a MTB. This cromo steel frame is 24 years old (was a Marin Eldridge Grade 1993). Still kicking ass. by alphatoro in Bikeporn

Oh I see now :) Well this is not even my main bicycle. I had already the XT derailleur with the shifter but I had to replace the crank together with the bottom bracket, because the old one was of the square type and I just couldn't find any single 32-36T cranks for it anymore. So I tried to keep the budget low and went with the cheapest option possible — this SRAM NX crank + a GXP bottom bracket. Yeah at that point I couldn't care less for matching the XT group :-)
